I am still coveting this meter. I suspect I will for a very long time - congratulations on the purchase, Nick!
Per Bob, perhaps those extra lit elements have something to do with cabling to the display; a pin is loose/corroded, something inexpensive like that.
--- Interesting how they extinguish in some modes, like noise is being coupled in by a particular adjacent element. Perhaps it's worth inspecting all the solder joints to the EL display...

Hi Matambale, well everything comes at a price so you too could have one and being in the US you've probably got loads of choice. I paid around $300 which is cheap but reflects its problems. I checked after Bob's comment and he's right! it is fine on ohms & current. Where does that get me? I've not a clue basically! It looks very clean inside despite the obvious exposure to damp. Maybe I should do a more careful inspection and get the circuit boards out if I can face it, as it doesn't look easy.
      Best wishes nick

Congratulations. I lost out on one on eBay a few weeks ago so it wasn't yours. Those extra segments didn't seem to be there when you were checking Ohms and a couple of other selections which suggests to my poor old noggin that the problem isn't (purely) fluorescent display related. But apart from making sure that some stray signal isn't coupling to that ribbon cable routed along the side of the case I'm at a loss to make any suggestions. But hey, as you say, it works. 👏

Hi Bob, its taken me about 5 years to get one at a reasonable price. I paid £255 for it which is cheap, but that reflects its problems. You're right I've just checked and no extra segments in ohms or current ranges. I hadn't noticed that! As you say that may mean it's not a display fault. But I've not a clue as to how to fix it. But it could certainly do with a new display, made me realise how bright the hp meter is. Thanks for your comment

I have heard that the dim display is a "feature" of these. They get dimmer as they age.

Cal seems good. The ghost digits could be a myriad of things. The VFD drive is Hi-Z so maybe a leakage issue? I'm clueless. I think you will grow to live with it.
And now for an entirely different subject: Debbie Harry showed up in her black gumboots at Glastonbury. The old heater still has a kick!

Clueless here too Danish. Interesting that those spurious segments don't appear in ohms or current modes, which may indicate the problem is not the display.
But I'm sure I'll learn to love it.
Debbie was good, but I thought she was better the previous week at the Isle of Wight festival. Amazingly she's 77! She doesn't look it. But I think she's been genetically modified! I haven't got that much energy at 61. Nice to see Glen Mattlock in the band.
