Woodturning - Out of This World Hollow Form Vessel
This week I'm sharing a slightly more advanced project that involves turning, hollowing, and carving/sculpting. Much of the hollowing and fine tuning of the outside shape has been cut out, but there's no trick to it - it's just done by eye. Keeping the upper and lower hemispheres relatively symmetrical is the most challenging part of this project. There are ways you could ensure the sphere is spherical, if that's important to you, but I tend to just go with what looks good enough to me.

Woodturning - Rotted Trunk to Gorgeous Bowl

Woodturning - A Not-So-Traditional Scottish Quaich [Winged Cup]

In part 2 of the quaich project, I shape the handles and embellish them with some carving. This is a great woodturning project if you have a small lathe or if you want to experiment with some wood carving without committing to a larger piece. #chadeames #woodturning #howto #woodart #turning Purchase My Artwork Interested in purchasing a turning from one of my videos? Woodturning - Traditional Scottish Ceremonial Quaich - Part 1
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.2 года назад
This is part one of a two part wood turning project - making a Scottish quaich. A quaich is a two (or sometimes 3 or 4) handled drinking cup, often used in weddings, ceremonies, or as a symbol of friendship. In part one, I show you one way to turn the cup and wing from a piece of kiln dried maple; it's probably not the best way, but it worked out well, nonetheless. Next week, in part two, I wil...
Turning a Walnut Burl Vase with Maple Stand - Woodturning project demo
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.2 года назад
Watch me demonstrate my method for turning a tall, skinny vase with a natural edge, along with a small footed stand for it. Using some gorgeous walnut burl, I share my approach for reducing vibration as you turn the vase, as well as a couple more tips that are handy for this project and many others. The stand that I made isn't what I had initially planned for that piece, so I might not use it; ...
Woodturning - Hollow Form Vessel Breaks on the Lathe - Woodworking Fail
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.2 года назад
This was a pretty sketchy woodturning project from the start, however I'm fully aware of the danger and risks involved. I'm sure some of you will be skeptical of my sanity and many will want to warn me how dangerous it is to do this or that and "what could have happened." No need. I'm all good. This IS a potentially dangerous project and I don't condone anyone attempting something beyond their ...
Woodturning - My Approach to Multi Axis Turned Candlesticks - Demo

Multi axis woodturning doesn't have to be complicated. For this turning project, I show a simple method for making candlesticks with a twist. This is a good beginner multi-axis turning project, as it doesn't require complicated shapes, jigs, or any special equipment. If you have never tried multi axis turning before, I hope you find this video helpful. Please be sure to like, subscribe, and lea...
Woodturning - Twice Turned Bowls Simplified [My Easy Inexpensive Method for Drying Blanks]
Просмотров 13 тыс.3 года назад
Today I share my process for how to make a twice turned bowl, which is where you start with a green wood blank, rough the basic shape of the bowl, dry the roughed out bowl for a period of time, then return it to the lathe to complete the turning. This results in a bowl that will stay round and have a minimal tendency to warp. There are various ways to accomplish this, and I've tried many of the...
Woodturning - Turning a Lidded Jewelry Box [Gorgeous Black Ash Burl & Gabon Ebony]
Просмотров 6 тыс.3 года назад
This week I'm showing one method of how to make a lidded box or jar, using a nice block of black ash burl and little Gabon ebony for a knob / finial. It should be pretty easy to follow the process, but there are a decent number of steps in this project. I use several different tools on this one, including a few different bowl gouges, a skew, and a round nose scraper. Overall, the piece turned o...
Woodturning - Natural Edge End Grain Cherry Bowl [and Oneway Termite Tool Revisited]
Просмотров 33 тыс.3 года назад
This week's wood turning project starts with a slice of a cherry log, which I turn into a natural edge (or live edge) round bottom bowl. Please note, this is not the best project for a beginner, especially if they have not turned many end grain oriented pieces. Once again, I attempt to use my Oneway Termite Tool and, once again, end up with mixed results (at best). Ultimately, I used a variety ...
Woodturning - Osage Orange Natural Edge Bowl [with Scorched Rim]
Просмотров 8 тыс.3 года назад
Osage orange wood is one of my favorites because of its bright yellow color, but it's often pretty gnarly and can be tough to work with. This piece had some cracks, an off center pith, and was somewhat dry (osage orange is hard on tools when it's dry), so I stuck with a simple natural edge design, minus the bark, and scorched the edge instead, which gave it a nice contrast against the yellow wo...
Woodturning - Natural Edge Bowl from an Ash Tree Knot

Woodturning - Burl-esque Cherry Round Bottom Bowl
Просмотров 7 тыс.3 года назад
Watch my "burl-esque" show as I peel away layer by layer to reveal some very impressive wood... Even though there was no burl formed on the outside of this log, inside was a nice surprise - an area with layers of burl-like grain, but without any burl eyes. Some people might call it a layered burl or onionskin burl. From it, I turn a somewhat spherical, round bottom bowl with an open top and nat...
Wood Turning - I Had To Work For This One [Natural Edge Walnut Bowl]
Просмотров 5 тыс.3 года назад
I knew this could be a challenging bowl, but I didn't expect it to be THAT much of a pain... There was an internal crack and more deterioration than I thought, and while it definitely wore me out, it worked out relatively well in the end. You can't hear it in the video, but the bowl was making some awful "loose" vibration sounds much of the time, due to a crack (with the deterioration) that ran...

A few things: locate the camera overhead to see you turning down the piece; tell what tool you are using; always tighten the chuck with the key. I might had a blade to use. Will check the tool box.

For a square, multiply the side by 1.414 = the diagonal. The diameter of the circle that fits into a square = side of the square.

Chad thank-you for the very detailed video on the making of your Star Finial Box. As a new turner I appreciate the sharing of information regarding design and proceedure, its been a great help to speed up the learning curve. A couple of quick questions if I may, what size is this piece, my guess is about4-5 in. dia. Second, when ebonising the finial and base, what type of dye did you use. Thanks, really like your work and videos, and no they are not too long or detailed for the novice,

ThanksI have done the same for the last few years. If you don't need the bowls any time soon eventually you will have enough that you will always have dry stock. Recently I have had needs and no dry stock to use. I have found that one or two hour stints in our convection oven on the lowest setting of 140 deg works wonders.

@@PoisonShot20 I use bags and boxes too. Depends on the urgency. If I’m in a rush normally 1 hour in the oven or maybe 2. First rule is that there are no rules. Just try it and see.

Although the end result looks good, here are some tipps. I work almost exclusively with recycling old skateboards. I’m also turning plenty of bowls and other pieces on the lathe from this marerial. 1. Sand the decks before you cut them, it’s much quicker and cleaner. I recommend an angle grinder with flap discs. 2. You didn’t sand all the laquer and old graphics / debirs and skate wax off, I was terrified for you. That kind of glue up on a bowl blank?? Lucky that only one outer layer flew off. This blank could have exploded on you in a really dangerous way. It is plywood after all. So if you glue 20 layers of skateboards together, you’ll have 19 glue joints + the 6 glue joints inside each skateboard layer. Adding to it, this is hard maple plywood, so not easy to turn regardless. This could have ended very differently, only one glue joint needs to fail for a blank lile this to become a projectile. Please be careful. 3. As you surely noticed, the decks have concave. Which is why your sanding attempts didn’t do too well on a flat belt sander. This concave requires you to match the pieces better and apply more clamping force than usual. I use a press with a hydraulic jack to clamp up bowl blanks. This ensures good contact between layers and safe (as safe as possible) turning. Don’t be discouraged by my words, this is just a bit different from your regular wood. So much fun, once you made actual lumber out of the old decks!

Chad why didnt you leave a foot on that bowl, you had a nice looking profile for a foot at one point but ultimately your left with a bowl of sorts that if anything is put in it it will just fall over.
