Wood Turning - I Had To Work For This One [Natural Edge Walnut Bowl]

- I knew this could be a challenging bowl, but I didn't expect it to be THAT much of a pain... There was an internal crack and more deterioration than I thought, and while it definitely wore me out, it worked out relatively well in the end. You can't hear it in the video, but the bowl was making some awful "loose" vibration sounds much of the time, due to a crack (with the deterioration) that ran through 2/3 of the bowl. The whole situation kept getting progressively worse as I hollowed deeper. I did stabilize it with CA glue and wasn't too concerned with it blowing apart, but it was certainly a bit nerve-racking. As of posting the video, I still haven't sanded it or decided exactly what I'm going to do with the void and soft spots, but I'll try to finish it up and post it in the next few days. I do talk a little more in this one, but I think I cut out the worst of my rambling, so hopefully it's bearable.

Wonderful colors amazing grain variations.
Wow lovely wood brilliant work stay safe
Thank you, George!
Beautiful, so far...can't wait to see it finished!
Thanks! It’s on my Instagram and Facebook now if you want to check it out.
Beautiful wood, with resin wil be a very beautiful bowl 🤗
Amazing job. Great piece. Very beautiful 😊😊
Thank you!
Well done Chad. You did a good job of not blowing that one up. I’ve had to start removing all the bark off walnut. Developed a contact allergy to the dust when I turn through it. Still love the end result that we get from it though. Alway a lovely wood.
Thanks, Doug! Yeah, walnut is just hard to beat in terms of finished results.
Almost every variety of walnut I've ever seen worked on with a lathe or carving has really turned out nicely with some striking grain. It's tough to work however, and when dry, it's a real challenge. As one of my graduate professors would say about that piece, "It's drier than a dead dingo's dong!" She's from New Zealand. Good turn....and best wishes.
Yeah, I’ve turned tons of it and sometimes it cooperates and sometimes it fights back. Sharp tools definitely help. Thanks!
That turned out great, Chad!
Thanks, Rick!
Thanks Chad u have inspired me once again bro... today I finally spent the $ and ordered a nice 4" chuck for my shop Smith lathe
That’s great! It’s weird to hear that I inspire people. 😊 I’m just glad you like what I do and get something out of it. Which chuck did you get?
C’est un super beau bois et bien travaillé bravo l’artiste 👍👏
Very pretty...!
Well Done! I always appreciate it when presentations show the issues/problems and how they work through them. It is a learning experience for everyone! Thank You.
Glad it was helpful! That's the reality of turning - it doesn't always go according to plan, so sometimes you have to improvise. Thanks, Joel!
I really like it....even though it was a tough piece to work with, you did a great job. The markings, and the bark edge, look great! Can't wait to see the finished product...and what you come up with next 😁👍
Thanks, Heather! Glad you liked it!
Can't wait to see the finished bowl, Chad! It should be beautiful when done. Thanks!
Thank you, Greg!
Keep up the great work Chad. Hello from Quebec, Canada
Hey there! Thanks for watching!
Very nice.
Thank you, George!
Hey Chad! Awesome bowl! That live edge is just incredible!!
- Seth
Thanks, Seth! So far so good with the bark... fingers crossed 🤞
Good to see someone from Kentucky turning. I just tried a piece of standing dead black locust. It was the hardest wood I've tried to turn. Have you tried it?
Yes, black locust is some of the hardest domestic wood you’ll find... when green it’s not too bad to turn, when dry it is brutal. Same with osage orange. Thanks for watching! Where in KY are you?
thats a really nice piece 👏
Great project. Nice bowl. Like your face shield. Where did you get it?
Thanks, James... I love my face shield respirator. It's a PowerCap Active from Peke Safety. I'll forget to take it off sometimes, I'm already so used to it.
Awesome piece Chad, great job. I kind of expected resin for the fix on the bottom.
What is the purple handled gouge you used on this one?
Thanks! The bowl gouge is a John Jordan 5/8” V cut gouge made by Thompson tools. It’s very different from the gouges I’ve been using recently so I’m still getting used to them and figuring out how I want to ultimately grind them. But I do like it quite a bit. Thanks for watching!
It looks great Chad but isn't it a bit too thin for a first turning?
Chances are you may not get it back to round.
I agree. It’s a great looking bowl but after it’s dried you won’t be able to turn it to symmetrically shape it. Better be thinking of some hand held power sander.
Yes, it is WAY too thin for a first turning, but I'm not doing a twice turned bowl with it. It's all sanding from this point. Thanks for watching!
Thanks! You're right, it's definitely not going back on the lathe. This is just a once turned bowl. And, yes, there's lots of sanding to do, but if you've watched many of my videos, you already know how I'm going to tackle that...
@@ChadEamesWoodWorks looking forward to seeing the final product. I actually have a green turned hickory bowl, without bark left on, that I took out of the shavings last week. It didn’t move as much as I thought and will be a nice bowl once it has fully acclimated. Best of luck to you.
Hickory is one wood that I have very little experience with... I'll have to see if I can find some around and see how it works. Good luck with the bowl! I'm just about to head down to my shop to get started on all that sanding... yay. :)
Hi Chad, Wondering how the sanding turned out. My hickory bowl didn’t crack but it sure went oval. Curious how you tackled the sanding when it would go all wonky spinning on the lathe.
The sanding went fine. If you want to see how to sand an out of round bowl, check out the last half of my video Sawtooth Hackberry Bowl w/ Spiral Carving - Woodturning & sculpting project It’s not an out of round bowl, but the concepts are the same.
Milliputt wouldve been nice.
Been their done that it's really not that hard.
