Making a Freehand Pipe--Pipemaking from Start to Finish

- **To answer a frequently asked question about this video: the texture is created by sandblasting. Unfortunately, the footage I recorded of this process was corrupted and I was unable to use it for this video. If you would like to see how I sandblast, you can see it in these two videos:
• How to Make a Billiard...
• Sandblasting -- Beginn...
This video demonstrates the steps taken to create a freehand pipe--from start to finish. In the past, I've shown how to make a billiard pipe, which is made in the tradition that uses a lathe to turn the primary form of the shape and to align and machine the holes. Freehand pipes do not rely on the precision of machinery to achieve symmetry (or asymmetry if that is the aim), instead requiring a trained eye and refined hand-shaping techniques to render the desired result.
In this video, you'll see me begin with the raw briar block, sketch a shape on it based on the natural pattern of grain within it, and then shape, refine, and polish the materials.
I've had a long of questions about some of the tools you see in the video. Here are some purchase links for some of them:

I always wanted to make one for my dad. I cannot anymore. Don't wait people. Just do it.
Every year as a child I went to a smoke shop in the mall in Kansas City. I loved walking in the humidor and smelling all the tobacco mixing in the air. My father and I would pick out a pipe for my grandfather for Christmas as a present for him till the day he stopped smoking pipe. This brings back a lot of memories and some tears when I saw this pipe. I miss them all. Great work Sir. You have a great talent.
Thanks so much for sharing. I'm glad the video could take you back down memory lane.
Yes, I am a Kansas City native and I believe I know the pipe shop you are referencing. It is probably Diebel's Pipes on the Plaza! Then he opened a couple more locations. One at Metcalf Mall in the 1970s. The other possibility would be a shop called the Tinder Box.
Fred Diebel's shop was considered the finest in the midwest; he even had a tobacconist who developed and made fine mixtures for their customers! I spent a lot of time and perhaps too much money on my pipe collection. It spanned from the very early 1970s thru the late 1990s. Then it was time to stop and find new homes for my nice collection of pipes.
Q
Another KC native. There was one in the lower level of Blue Ridge Mall. Late 70' Early 80's. Fond memories of going there with my Dad.
I think it was the Tinder Box that we went to. If memory serves me correctly. Thank you for bringing that memory back to me. Now I feel so old (53), going back to when I was way before my pre-teens with my father to that store. I can still remember the smells. Locked into my brain like a steel trap. God Bless you.@@joem.383
Jeff, you're the reason I started making pipes. I wish I lived in San Diego to learn from the best. Everyone has a favorite pipemaker. For me its you.
That’s very kind of you to share. Thank you! And keep up the good work!
This is wonderful. I started my woodworking journey by making a few pipes about 8 years ago, and I obsessively devoured any pipe making info I could, including some of your older videos and the forums of course. I have since moved over to heirloom quality fine furniture. Some days I think about returning to my roots and making some more pipes, but man is it meticulous work. My experience at least gave me the ability to appreciate what the full time pipe makers like you are doing.
Glad you liked the video and can appreciate it from your own pipe and other woodworking experience

I have been considering making a pipe, but when I hear someone who is making heirloom quality fine furniture hesitate because, "man is it meticulous work," it makes me wonder if that is really what I want to do!
@@WesleyJolly a corn cob style pipe is a super easy way to start!
Ha. I used to make pipes too, I also remember going through all the information I could find, making my own tooling and the like. 😂 Sometimes I will make a pipe out of the blue just for fun, but you are right, it is painfully careful work.
Can look at three things endlessly: how the fire burns, how the water flows and how other people works. ))))

Likewise.. it suddenly appeared on my recommended videos. But what happened at 33:20? How did the bowl suddenly go from smooth to textured?
see description, the sandblasting footage was lost to file corruption, but other videos of mine show how it's done.
Thank you! Very inspiring for a newling, learned a lot just by watching.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Perfect job there well-done nothing like handmade, that was my first job after school in 1960 in London and for a while full-time. I see some different methods are used to what I was taught, for instance bending the stem it was done over a lighted candle and held in place and dipped in cold water until set. Also the staining of the bowl we used a mixture of whatever colour chosen and methylated spirits, used to dip the bowl in the mixture and burn it off over a candle. Then hung upside down on a wooden block with nails in to dry. There are many modern improvement's for the good to what I was used to compared to the way we did it all those years ago. I didn't get to go through all the processes though, just what was mentioned plus buffing all grades and polishing. The best part was the buffing after the staining bring out the grain in the briar it was very satisfying, anyway keep up the good work bye for now
Very cool. I love these stories about how similar tasks are completed in different contexts. Thanks for sharing!
Nice memory. 🙏🌹
@@amirarien5473 hi thanks for your reply most appreciated yes many fond memories, the building in which I worked is still there don't know what happened to the pipe factory though. I expect the owner retired and closed it down not long after I left all those years ago, he was getting on in age. I have just found your channel, and man oh man,its not just watching you,but not having to listen timeless looped music and chit chat was bliss, thank you, that video was 30 minutes of bliss.
Glad to know you found it. My newest video shows a few things that got left out of this one...but sadly has music. :-(
Very interesting, and it reminded me that I need to get some bearings for my bandsaw! I was surprised to see you holding the blank while drilling on the lathe, and clearing shavings by hand while it was spinning. I guess you've been lucky so far.
It looks more dangerous than it is. This drilling technique is used by hundreds of pipemakers around the world and I've never even heard of an injury while using it.
@@jalanpipes Thank you. It's probably more dangerous to _smoke_ the pipe than it is to make it! Anyway, I've ordered some bearings from eBay so should have my bandsaw back in action before too long.
@@jalanpipes Спасибо за интересное видео.Ваша работа вдохновляет.

Love the way you used the chamber reamer to hold the pipe during sanding! Like a pin vise in reverse. Clever.
That's a trick I learned from the great Jody Davis.
Hey Jeff! I've been using your videos as inspiration and education for so long now. I'm a pipe maker for Kapp & Peterson and also started revently on my high grade artisan pipe journey making my own, to which your videos have been a great help! I've wondered for a while, what is the powder you use on the finish and then hit with the heat gun?
Since you don't seem to have gotten a reply, I suspect that it is powdered caranuba wax. In addition to protecting the wood, some will rub off the high points and the colors will mature to show the handling and use.
@@milesnoell makes sense. Carnauba wax is quite used in many ways. Thank you for the insight 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@@milesnoell i have recently seen one of his videos and he says he uses carnauba 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hey Austin, thanks for reaching out. I’ve been away on holiday and am just checking back in to YT. I’m so happy to know that they’ve been helpful to you. That is powdered carnauba wax. I usually lightly spray a shellac finish to set the stain and then dust the pipe with carnauba and melt it.
I thought that I must have dozed off and missed the most interesting part, that between the electrical tape going on and being removed so I wound back and no, that part must be a secret.
Great video! Is there a reason that you sanded to such a nice smooth surface before sandblasting? Is the powder at the end that you heat up a powdered wax? Thanks!
Thanks. The pipe must be relatively smooth before the sandblasting because facets will be visible after that process if they are not removed. The powder is carnauba wax.
That was incredibly satisfying to watch! I’ve just started smoking pipes and maybe one day I will have the space and know how to make my own. I’m a fan of Ducas Cherrywood style pipes where the shank and bowl stretch away from each other
Great!! Thanks for watching.

Thank you, just found this video. My dad loved a pipe and my mom loved Carter Hall Tobacco. God Bless and stay safe.
Glad you enjoyed it
thank you so much for this video, it's really helpful for me to see it, every step from start to finish. If I may ask a question, what essence of Fiebing did you use?
I'm not sure. I have a mixture of several reddish hues that I make on my own. The Fiebings container just holds the mix.
When you turned on the sanding disc in slow mo, it sounded like the opening of Also sprach Zarathustra!
I don't think I realized just how long I let the slow-mo go! Whoops. Yeah, some clear 2001: A Space Odyssey vibes with the controller tones.

Thanks for this amazing craftsmanship I've always wondered how pipes are made.. So how did you make the texture of the pipe at 33:21 and what was that powder you put on it
glad you enjoyed it! see the description for the question on texture. the powder is carnauba wax.
@@jalanpipes very frustrating to skip that step while watching
I'd have included it if I had it, but the video was corrupted. Not much I can do but direct you to other videos I've made that show that part.
great video Jeff, the powdered shellac, any reason for this over liquid shellac? Thanks for sharing?
It's powdered carnauba, not shellac. I use a very light coating of spray shellac first with wax on top.
@@jalanpipes intersting, thanks. no issues with shellac when you heat up the wax?
If you use too much you'll have problems. Just a very thin coating left to dry before applying the wax will work out fine. Also, be easy with the heat gun.
Just stumbled upon this-- fascinating! Jeff, I hope you and yours are well. -Chris

I've been smoking a tobacco pipe on and off for a bit over 30 years. Have always wanted to make my own pipe and have been thinking of growing my own tobacco and making my own flavour (I have always been partial to cherry Cavendish, Port and a Port and Sherry flavour). I have turned my hand at a fair number of different skills from blacksmithing to firefighting to working in a wholesale plant nursery to a cobbler, and a fair number of other jobs in between. I have always wanted to learn how tobacco pipes are made. I think I just found a good source to start learning. You have a new subscriber from the Land down under.
Very cool! Welcome to the fun!
@@jalanpipes , thank you. I look forward to using your channel as a learning resource. What are your thoughts on other woods like cherry wood for pipes? In Australia we're a bit limited with wood varieties that are suitable for pipes. I'm trying to find a list of timbers that are suitable for smoking pipes. If you would know what other woods are suitable or where I can find such a list, I would appreciate being pointed in the right direction. So far I only know of 3 or 4 that are the most common, but would love to know of others. Thank you.
Very nice work! Thank you!😉👍
