Pipe Making: A Black & White Bulldog

  • Several years ago one of my most loyal customers wanted a Bulldog based of a Radice Silk Cut Pure Bulldog, in black & white, with a 9mm filter. So obviously I made him one.
    Now, another customer was so charmed by this pipe that he wanted an identical one.
    Due to natural variations in the wood, an exact copy is never a good idea, but this pipe came very close to the original.
    Pipes like this one are always a challenge due to the diamond shaped stem, which still requires a comfortable mouthpiece.

    I got into making pipes about a year ago. they are still slightly crude because I have no lathe, only a sander and drill press but I make it work. This pipe is beautiful though

    • @MassisPipes
      @MassisPipes  Год назад

      @@maggs131 I'm afraid I disagree. Yes, you can make pipes without a lathe. Any experienced pipemaker would be able to make most shapes without a lathe. It would simply take much longer.
      However, there's not a single fulltime pipemaker that I know that doesn't use a lathe, nearly all of which are metal lathes.
      The fact of the matter is, lathes make pipemaking a LOT easier and it's not even about shaping the pipe, which is almost always done largely on a sanding disk. It's about drilling your holes exactly where you need them and being able to perfectly face a surface perpendicular to a drilled hole.
      Without a lathe, making a pipe with a flush stem without any light gaps is an absolute nightmare. With a lathe it's pretty easy.
      Finally, details like the ring on a bulldog are nearly impossible to do without a lathe.

    I noticed that you used home made woodturning tools from chisels. Is this something that you would recommend for the beginner ? Are they as good as the much more expensive stainless steel tools ?

    • @MassisPipes
      @MassisPipes  2 года назад +1

      I wouldn't even call them "homemade", they're simple wood chisels that I use on my metal lathe, ground to a profile I like. The round one I use is actually bent from use because it's not made for this, and I really should replace them with some decent tools...
      So no, I would definitely NOT recommend this. Buy a set of decent quality small woodturning chisels.
      If you don't have any experience in cutting techniques, opt for ones that have carbide tips. Something like the Easy Wood Tools Easy Start finisher would be very useful in the hands of a beginner.

    2. I just started making pipes and I don't know what I could use (besides carnauba wax) to finish the pipe. What could I use to bring out the grain of the briar?
    Thank you very very much!!

      The 'default' finish for a pipe is sand to 400grit, stain black, sand 600, stain topcolour, buff with tripoli paste, polish with white diamond paste and finish with carnauba. You can get a VERY shiny finish that way :-)
