Very nice mate, I have had a big bronze nut of a propellor shaft knocking around the shop for years, now you have given a use for it, thanks for a nice vid,, from Australia
Amazing project - just leave out the decorative "stress raisers" on the handle: they transform a modern, elegant design into what looks like a re-purposed chair leg ... I would know, as I am a chair maker by trade and this is how we made our mallets back in the day!
I can watch your videos all day long. I've made a couple of projects inspired by you. The ferro rods went down very well with my nephews, they thank you.
Cool and useful, I might have to try to make something similar some day. Though I don't think the sides of the nut needed the buffing wheel. It might be the year 2020, but not everything _needs_ to be shiny and chrome.

Thanks! I use the same lights and camera as in my previous 3 videos, Panasonic G80/G85. Only difference is that this time it was full manual mode, while in previous videos it was aperture priority and the camera decided the lighting. Even though I used +3 steps exposure compensation it still was too dark... This time I like the way the video looks, but I overexposed a few shots. I need a bit more experience.

Good idea, I found an m48 nut for £16 and weighing in at just under 32 ounces, a perfect mallet head for heavy timber framing and mortising. I'll turn a nice handle on the lathe out of wood, possibly from Ash, beech, elm, maple or apple wood. I'm also thinking of wrapping leather cord around the handle, estwing style. The good thing is that that it will stand up on its head. It will probably be better balanced than my Ash mallet because it has to be pretty big relying on wood alone for weight.
