Pipe Making - a Reverse Calabash Wasp

- One of my most loyal pipe collectors came to me with another request.
He had seen a beautiful wasp shaped pipe by Rolando Negoita and wanted a similar pipe, but in a colourscheme matching the previous pipes I have made him: a black sandblast with a faux ivory stem.
Join me in my workshop as we turn a large Italian Briar Ebouchon, a section of faux ivory acrylic and a slice of faux ivory polyester into a lovely new pipe.

Amazing! Very impressive and fascinating video Nick... love your skills!
That was awesome! I always pick up some tips and tricks watching you! I am in the process of making my third Pipe now! Thanks again🍭🐓👶
Happy to be of any help :-) Just keep in mind many of these procedures are very much "try at your own risk" ;-)
Very cool reverse calabash bravo !
Beautiful! I've never seen anybody do sandblasting on RUclips before thanks for the video!
Thanks! There are a few others out there, but you'll have to dig deep into RUclips :-) I hope to do a bit more detail on the sandblasting process sometime, but before doing so I need to build a sandblast-proof camera enclosure...
So badass and beautiful i hope to get as good as u
Your work is amazing, what size lathe machine are you using. Can you please share.
It's an Optimum TU2506V, 380V version
Your video it’s amazing. What type of oil or lacquer do you use for the finish (on the black finish)?
I'm still experimenting with different finishes for sandblasted pipes. This one was finished with nothing but some very thinned shellac :-)
@@MassisPipes Thanks!
Hi Nick, thanks for the Video 👍, you have an adress where the Chuck Jaws with Pins can be purchased?
These were made by Steve "smokindawg" on the pipemakersforum. Nowadays Vermont Freehand has them for sale. They have "knuckles" for grip, but no centering pins. Not that I really miss them. vermontfreehand.com/product/chuck-jaws/
What is the little file you use to open up the draw hole in your stems? I've been trying to find something small like that.
It's a simple needle file from a 5$ set in a local DIY store. I used my grinder to flatten one side and use the other to fine-tune my slots
What size lathe is that?. Never I did. Found it from a frame on the video. Pretty much what I’m looking for.
It's an OptiTurn TU2506 400V with 250 swing X 550 bed length. Perfect size for a pipemaker, although bigger is always better if you can afford it :-)
What type of chuck is that? Size and brand? The one that’s holding the jaws not the huge one...awesome videos bro, keep up the great content
Thanks! It's a Oneway chuck, the base model :-)
Think I’ve seen those on Vermont freehand. The jaws at least.
@@peter-radiantpipes2800 yes, the jaws are identical to those at Vermont Freehand (I've had mine since before he started selling them iir) but the chuck is a OneWay. These jaws also fit Nova chucks I believe.
Hello sir. What are you using for blasting Medea ? Thank you very much. Beautiful pipes.
Glass bead :-)
@@MassisPipes do you mind if I ask what grit it is ? Thank you very much. Mark
This batch is 40-70micron I believe. But I plan on experimenting a bit as it isn't perfect...
@@MassisPipes thank you again. And I enjoy watching your videos. Awesome work. Thank you. Mark
@@markRTFGuns thank you for the compliment! A new video will be up soon!!
what compressor power is needed for sandblasting? Thank you
The very minimum would be a 1 HP, 25 gallon. But that would take ages with poor results. For comfortable blasting you want at least a 4HP with a 75 gallon tank, capable of doing 15 CFM at 90 psi.
Mine is a Michelin 2stage 4hp with a 250 Liter tank, I can keep blasting continuously and can do a simple blast in about 20-30 minutes.
16:43 what is this oil?
That's a thinly cut blonde dewaxed shellac :-)
You ever crack a knuckle while shaping one of those things on the lathe? That’s gotta hurt like a mother…
Not as much as you'd think. A slight scrape is enough to warn you to keep your hands out of the way. Honestly I've hurt myself worse on the 36 grit sanding wheel...
Don't get me wrong, sticking your hand into that chuck can be VERY painful, deadly even on a bigger lathe. Which is why I don't ;-)
Bona nit
