the author does like to from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ as another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us dont have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we wont be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.
You're young, you have your whole life ahead of you, then one day you wake up -- you're into woodworking, you have a riding lawnmower, you like single malt scotch, and waxing your pipe doesn't mean what it used to.
TIP! To prevent kinking the stem when heating and bending it; first insert a length of stainless steel wire down the length of it. It will prevent the small hole from collapsing and deforming. Wakodahatchee Chris
Your love of the halflings weed has clouded your mind. Awesome video, I enjoy a bowl of pipe tobacco now and again. Always thought it would be neat to try making one myself.
I agree that this may be one of my favorite projects that I have ever seen. I have been using a pipe to keep the insects away on the Maine rivers for about 30 years. I just picked up wood working 8 years ago and never put the two together. When my shop gets up and running after the house is built. I think I must try this out. Thank you for great work and great content!!
Dude.....Your vids are starting to grow me. I love it!!!. Had a family member ask me to make him a pipe. This will be a first for me. Happy woodworking!!!
Beautiful pipe. Love the natural edge on the top of the bowl. Perfect pipe for the enjoyment of a little seven leaf blend from your favorite dispensary. Thank you for sharing this nice build.
That’s a stunning churchwarden, I’m a 15 yr long pipe smoker…. If you don’t sell any, you may want to do it, that’s quality. I believe they also use stains, often coloured to coat the bowls.
Great video! I also coat the inside of the bowl with a small layer of honey. Helps the pipe last longer and less worry of burn. Not as necessary for Briar but other woods it is very helpful.
You can also buy a block of briar which is pre-bored, if you are worried about making a mistake. I made a couple last year and bought the wood from American Smoking Pipe company, Wolf Creek, Montana. Good idea to learn about the different qualities of briar wood.
This might be my favorite project you've ever done. I bought a Savinelli pipe in Estonia years ago when I traveled the globe with the Harlem Globetrotters. We'd smoke our pipes (some smoked cigars) in the closed outdoor cafes in our European hotels. Years later I gave it to my father. He had it for 11 years and after he died in 2020, I found it in his dresser in the exact same condition. He was too scared to use it because he thought it was too nice. So now I smoke it occasionally with a local group of tobacco pipe smokers. We gather around someones backyard fire pit, smoke our pipes, drink whiskeys or bourbons and talk about Inklings, dragons, wood, smoke and other things that get lost in the night. Thanks to your video, I'm going to put some briar wood saw dust on my shop floor.
As a former pipe smoker I have always wanted to make one or two of my own pipes. This is a great small project that will teach carving and sophisticated measuring.
I only stumbled on your site now and I like your pipe making editorial. Thanks, I enjoyed it. Many many moons ago I was a pipe smoker and I used to wipe the head of my favourite pipe on the fine oils beside my nose. After a while the pipe picks up a glow you would not believe.
Glad I watched this video. Made my first pipe before this and didn’t really consider the wood, ended up making it out of pine case it’s what I had on hand. Now it’s going to sit in my shelf and serve as a warning to myself 😂
Radagast lives (even though he's a bit gray at the moment)!!! But you need a bird's nest with all of the accoutrements under your hat. Vive la somewhere!
LOL. I make wood rings on my lathe as a way to use my cutoffs and scraps. I sand those down to 800, add some coats of CA as s finish, and then go all the say to 3000. Sanding is a pain, but it does fix a lot of mistakes and in the end, it's like glass. Nobody enjoys sanding (at least no sane person), but it makes our work look good. That briar burl is beautiful!
To get the stem into the block, have you tried putting the stem in the freezer for a bit. The cold shrinks it making it easier to put into your block. Once the stem warms up, it's not going anywhere
Pipe smoker here, you want to be able to remove the stem from tobacco pipes for cleaning purposes. So having it wedged in and unable to remove would make cleaning pretty frustrating. Also ChurchWardens (a type of pipe with really long stem) have a tendency to break needing new stems and again if it's locked into place you're gonna have a bitch of a time replacing it
Mate you always wow me with your craftsmanship but this time you took it to the next level 💪🏻💪🏻 , my dream is to be able to make my own pipe ! Now I have the recipe! Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
Yes a great mini-project there, Jason. I roared with merriment at then final scene in your garden. When I was about twenty ( a few years back) I smoked a pipe which I always left clean with those pipe pull-throughs etc, and left it on my dresser with my tobacco pouch and lighter. Next time I would light-up the pipe would be nasty and wet which puzzled me. Turns out that my ten year-old sister was smoking it too with a friend up in the bushes! That ended my pipe-smoking career, and it sat in a drawer for many more years and I transitioned to cigarillos.
Great video - and thanks for sharing your methods on this. Great result, and also love your flair for the dramatic Gandalf... BTW - excellent choice of Whiskey too - the Doublewood is great, although I love the Caribbean Cask even more so from Balvenie.
Fun project. My grandad used to smoke a pipe and I just loved the cherry tobacco he used. He was a sailor that smoked a traditional meerschaum pipe. By the way, let me recommend George Dickel Barrel Reserve whiskey. You can thank me later.
Only 3 sour mash whiskeys made in the world that I know of: Jack Daniels, George Dickel, and Henry McKenna. Always some words exchanged after skydiving for the day as to which is the better. So the boss lady set up a blind taste test for the boys: first was George, second was Henry, and third place was Jack. George in a cup of joe and a pipe of your favorite 'baccie is a great way to watch the sun set.
This was an absolute pleasure. Though. I’m a hand tool guy. I tend to stay away from power tools, except chainsaws, as usually I do spoon carving to one degree or another. If you want to save a little time with your finish shaping, try a good sharp sloyd knife. I like mora and beavercraft. Though narex released a craft knife that looks diesel. That could help with the rough work and then you can really focus on your detail work with the smaller files. An you still get to drink good whiskey. Just a thought. This video gained you a new subscriber.
I don't smoke. But I have noticed that pipes have two very specific uses. The first is for extreme approval of machines. Tapping a pipe out on the boiler of an old steam tractor or on the tyre of a vintage car really demonstrates the unspoken yet unbreakable bond between the smoker and machine (which may often be referred to as "old girl"). The second is for pointing at people. When the mouthpiece is pointed towards a young nephew, it is usually accompanied by life changing advice. Similarly taking aim with it at the neighbours cat, which has once again encroached on the runner bean patch will deter it for a significant number of weeks.... great vid Jason so glad you don't smoke because we need you to stay healthy for years and years to come, I mean you haven't built a cathedral yet and I am sure its on your list.
Nice.. I have some 100 year old red mahogany ends that I have started to make into pipes.. I must finish them this summer and put them on display.. you can't smoke them but they sure look good! thanks whisky man
My dad smoked a pipe when I was in my single digits. I have always loved the smell. I don't smoke. Never have, never will, but this looks like a fun project. Dad just turned 80, I will ask what type of pipe and tobacco he once used.
Design change: I would offset the bottom of the bowl and the stem hole offset so there is a slight reservoir for spit and other oils. I look for this as someone who smokes and is a bit druely
I thought the beard, tattoos and slip-sliding entrances were enough but adding smoking a pipe to the mix makes this dude even more like a cartoon character than before. I can’t wait to see what’s next.
This was one of my first woodworking projects. I ordered a kit off eBay and shaped mine with a Dremel. I made a lot of mistakes and never even applied finish but I made it and smoked out of it.
One time I thought about making a pipe with a Wi-Fi microcontroller and a sip/puff switch concealed in the bowl. You could tie that into your home automation and be a modern day magic user.
smoking and drinking took too many of my family memebers to want to do it, but pipes are just so classy. I might need to figure out a way to make one that blows bubbles
I appreciate the heads up on carcinogenic woods. I’d hate to get cancer from smoking. 😬
Yh right lol
You wouldn’t want that
Pipe smoking and cigarette smoking are in different universes when it comes to cancer.
In your case, you should use pine to make your pipe. It’ll coat the inside of your lungs and protect them.
Cancer squared

That whole Gandalf thing at the end was great - perfect ship
Which pocket hole screws are best for this project?
Wouldn't you want to use a domino to join the pieces?
Flammable Starbond heavy is recommended
Epoxy river pipe
@@elijahellis65 I hate this.
Definitely the blue outdoor ones
Beautiful pipe. Love the natural edge on the top of the bowl. Perfect pipe for the enjoyment of a little seven leaf blend from your favorite dispensary. Thank you for sharing this nice build.
I like this style of"anyone can do" projects and the fact that you dressed up as my aunt Beryl was very entertaining thank you and keep em coming
That’s a stunning churchwarden, I’m a 15 yr long pipe smoker…. If you don’t sell any, you may want to do it, that’s quality. I believe they also use stains, often coloured to coat the bowls.
Leather stains if I remember correctly, yes?
Could be, not sure. Dark browns and dark reds are common.

i don't smoke but i love the elegant shapes pipes have...
fantastic work!!!
Now you're in my territory. I've been making meerschaum and corncob pipes for years. I love pipe tobacco.
There's no pipe making videos on your channel.
When I was 15, a friend of mine taught me how to make a pipe out of a soda can. Is that basically the same thing?
Soda can…..apple…whatever you want
Dude... That hair restoration stuff must really work!!!!!!
Love the grab your whiskey part!!

You really crack me up. This is one of the better entertaining post. Thanks for this, it is a good break from the usual. :)
great looking pipe!! The grey hair and beard top it off nicely. I always enjoy your videos, thanks.
My grandfather smoked a pipe, and when I did smoke ( I quit years ago) I had an occasion to use one, thats a real beauty
As a former pipe smoker I have always wanted to make one or two of my own pipes. This is a great small project that will teach carving and sophisticated measuring.
We made "pipes" in highschool shop class. But they looked more like a block of wood with a screen shoved in it. 😄
Still fun watching you man! Looking forward to the next fun project and all the comical commentary. Thanks for the content.

My dad used to smoke pipe and would have loved something like this.
Great video and awesome work.
Fascinating….. not only instructional but hugely entertaining too…..many thanks
He really took “the sanding channel” to a whole new level
“Pocket holes on Pinterest!” Lol. Oohhhb Burn 🔥
Glad I watched this video. Made my first pipe before this and didn’t really consider the wood, ended up making it out of pine case it’s what I had on hand.

Man of many talents 😂

Solid Gandalf the Grey costume, my kids and I love all the work you do (they also really enjoy your jokes). Thanks, and keep it up 🙂

Wow that came out amazing. The rough top came out beautiful. Haven't smoked a pipe in years but I kinda want to make one now.
Nice pipe! And great video... I've made a couple pipes and still learned a couple things... thanks
Yay! The Balvenie! my favourite. Good taste my man!
Gandalf the Grey One! 🤣👍
Love your Videos!
Excellent video Bro and now to find some Briar and begin to dabble cheers
Love the outro. God bless you
I’ve been wanting to do this, now I’m gonna give it a whirl. Thanks fir this video.
Nice change of pace, Jason. Great 'build'. Thanks!

Amazingly plain and complete - must be the whiskey. Thank you!
the Gandalf look....😀😀...I liked it
I like most all of your videos, but this is a great video. Really unique and fun.
This video ruled man and the pipe turned out very nice!
And all this time I thought you hated sanding!! Great looking pipe. Cheers 🥃
Good work! I was kinda hoping to see how to make the stems but I'm sure it's a master craft
Hey, Balvenie doublewood is my most favorite one ❤ cheers!
I've been wanting a wood stem or mouth piece for years, haven't come across one. This is a cool video.
Howdy, Brother! Balvenie 12 Yr Double Wood! Nice!
Great video - and thanks for sharing your methods on this. Great result, and also love your flair for the dramatic Gandalf...

I’m only 24 sec into the first video of yours I’ve ever watched and I’m subbing
Thanks for such a great project idea .... brilliant teaching as always... and scotch!
Nice.. I have some 100 year old red mahogany ends that I have started to make into pipes.. I must finish them this summer and put them on display.. you can't smoke them but they sure look good! thanks whisky man
Cheeba cheeba y'all!!! Nice work
My dad smoked a pipe when I was in my single digits. I have always loved the smell. I don't smoke. Never have, never will, but this looks like a fun project. Dad just turned 80, I will ask what type of pipe and tobacco he once used.
Going to actually try this out i appreciate the brief explanation
Thanks a lot. Very nice tutorial 🙏
Honestly love all your videos … great work
You are so amazing keep up the great work
I’m glad you explained all this because I’m short on cash
Went full hipster on us... Thanks for the great videos.
Thank you for sharing
Reminds me of a pipe I had back in the 1970’s.
Design change: I would offset the bottom of the bowl and the stem hole offset so there is a slight reservoir for spit and other oils. I look for this as someone who smokes and is a bit druely
Check out a Peterson System Pipe. That's what they do.
Amazing video. Thank you! I've liked and subscribed!
I thought the beard, tattoos and slip-sliding entrances were enough but adding smoking a pipe to the mix makes this dude even more like a cartoon character than before. I can’t wait to see what’s next.
Very classy !!
I personally think it would’ve been better to go to 420 after 320....that would make it go much easier to get through all of those other grits!!!
Great job! Gandalf would love that pipe! 👍👍😉😉😂😂
A good tip, always twist your pipe stem the same direction.
I've got a block of mahogany that I've been meaning to turn into a decorative pipe to put on my mantle. Looks like I got something to do this weekend.
Would never smoke a mahogany pipe - it can't take the heat....
Buchanan tartan jacket, nice.
Thank you! thank you!!!
Sweet smokin' jacket there Jason!
This was one of my first woodworking projects. I ordered a kit off eBay and shaped mine with a Dremel. I made a lot of mistakes and never even applied finish but I made it and smoked out of it.
Great video man!
LOVE IT!
Grate project!!!
As a touch, I would like to cure the pipe with some Cognac or Brandy. But that's me.
Nice Gandolph Bourbon 😀
Great video! I’ve always wanted to make one myself.
One time I thought about making a pipe with a Wi-Fi microcontroller and a sip/puff switch concealed in the bowl. You could tie that into your home automation and be a modern day magic user.
Nice job 👍
smoking and drinking took too many of my family memebers to want to do it, but pipes are just so classy. I might need to figure out a way to make one that blows bubbles
“Wax your pipe”! Fnaar fnaar fnaar.
Damn you did a good job and you are funny as well. Thanks for this. Nice job
Twist in one direction when removing or replacing your pipe stem
I don't smoke them, but I love the smell
I wanna hear/see more about that garden.
Seems like you could make some identical pipe stems to use to get the pipe down to size without damaging yoour stem. Or just have a sacrificial stem.
Ok... Ten seconds in... Liked it right away... Lol.
