Andy, you've got the greatest videos. No gosh awful music, no incessant or unnecessary yakking. An artist with his tools along with his creativity, artistry and care that you put into every piece you do. I love how you take a piece of wood, reimagine it and give it new life. Absolute stunning masterpiece!!
I’ve turned my friends on to your work. I love that there is no talking, just the sound of the wood meeting it’s future. Peaceful. Relaxing. Beauty. Thank you.
No, it doesn't. It looks brand new. Wood doesn't look like that after 100 years. It decays like any other organic material. In fact wood (obviously not a burr) is used in archaeological dating in a process called dendrochronology. Also the varnish on an antique wooden artefact from hundreds of years ago would have a different finish.
I love the way you've left all the natural faults and holes in. It would have been so easy to just carve it all away, but this shows the wood in all it's natural beauty! ❤
The sound of the gouge removing material, especially the sped-up sound, is mesmerizing. And the appearance of the burled wood at the end - you could spend hours staring at it. Beautiful.
The markings on this piece are absolutely beautiful. As a previous commenter has said your videos are a joy to watch. No unnecessary noise, just a master artist at work. Thanks for sharing.
I had no idea about the beauty of burls until I saw this video...and WOW, the end result is just stunning (no spoilers as to what it is, for those who haven't yet seen the end). Incredible! Also, thank you for your kindness in having no mid roll ads!
He always leaves some imperfections on the wood surface and when the work is finished, it is these 'imperfections' which makes the finished product 'perfect' Wow! Wow!! Wow!!! Talk about poetry in action 😮.
Beautiful! Perfection doesn't need any improvement! I love that you stopped when that point was reached, rather than filling holes/indentations with epoxy to make the bowl 'perfect'. It's perfect as it is!
WOW what a craftsman. That is beautiful. Who would have known what was under there unless you took the time to open it up. Thank you making the video and posting it.🥰
Gorgeous. I loved the simple elegance of this whole video. The burl was beautiful, the bowl has a great silhouette that takes great technique and shows off the wood. The editing wasn’t distracting. So good. So so good.
Lathe work is amazing. I've used mini lathes and floor lathes for tool-making in class. Our last demo, so many people were soothed to sleep by the sound of the mini lathe (perfect white noise!) so... Many stretch breaks were in order.
So lovely just letting the wood speak for itself. I find it very fascinating watching as the steps as you hollow out the inside go from steps down from the rim to steps up in the middle
This is Live Oak burl in my opinion. Its very beautiful as it appears like plant roots or even brain matter. Have turned many of these myself. Great work
Love how you leave some of the live edges and other natural imperfections. A lesser artist would have turned it down to uniformly smooth burl. Leaving those checks and cracks gives the piece so much more interest and character. And a visual reminder that this exquisite bowl was indeed wrought of a living tree. Well done.
Thank you for this video, my dad was a wood turner, self taught in his 60s and i hadn't seen him make a bowl so it was great seeing how he used to do it. In NZ burls were hard to find but he managed to get a few.
The moment I saw the word burl I knew what to expect - the simplest of forms to let the wood speak for itself with nothing but a rich varnish to bring out the grain. And I was not disappointed. I particularly liked the random irregularities in the rim and holes. I could feel the wood telling you where to go.
Love your work, Andy, and the end piece burl bowl is a beauty! I have to say, though, I would have been just as happy if you had stopped at 2:00 in, with the patches of both the bark surface and the exposed light underlying burl. Either way, your work in revealing the beauty of the wood is remarkable!
Hi Andy what a great piece of burl it has lots of character and nice grain I love all the nooks and holes. You really are a masterwoodturner, as you have let nature look its natural self with this bowl, it really is magnificent and unique. Thank you for a fabulous video as usual. Amanda xx
Awesome Andy as always. I love the work you do with pencils and your willingness to experiment. Have you ever considered drilling some holes in a cool piece of wood and inserting pencils into these holes. This could create new and un-seen creations with bursts of color in the middle of otherwise wonderful pieces of stock wood or burl. Thank you Dude. You are doing Great work and hope to have one of your creations in my collection someday. Cheers Mate. - M
Those finishing type cuts your making on the outside of the bowl where you use the wing as a scraper. Almost ever time I try it I end up with a lot of tear out. Great work and a nice good honest bowl. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
That is a *stunning* piece of wood, whatever it is; some sort of fruitwood, maybe? Whatever; gorgeously simple shape to show it off, and I love the finish-- it reminds me of an old globe of the world.
So beautiful, golden hands, you must be able to come up with something like this, it means that person's head works very well, God bless you, and there are many more such wonderful works
Imagine how many hours it took an American Eastern Woodland Indian to scrape a burl bowl with flint 4 times this big during the Winter inside his bark lodge by the light of his lodge fire.
I googled for "mappa burl" after a commenter suggested that it might be the type of wood. That's a poplar type of wood. No pun intended. It looks very much like what it could be. It turned out wonderfully! 😁👍👍
@@AndyPhillipWoodturning If you have a photo of it before you started turning it, you can paste it into Google Lens and it'll try to find matches for it. Horse Chestnut does seem to be a nice fit for the burl before being turned. 😊👍👍 Additionally, apologies for not seeing that you were originally from the UK.😀

I absolutely agree w Chris. When I begin to watch a video and the host keeps yapping I give up. It’s just too much of the wrong kind of noise.
What he said! 👍
@@morgancalvi6675 Nothing wrong with it in the classroom, it's just that the lack of it gives a peaceful air to these videos.
agree 100%!!!

Awesome! Thank you!
Andy, you treated that burl as a gift, gently and patiently uncovering the beauty of its' inner artwork. Thank you, again.
You mean "its," not "its'."
This is gorgeous. It looks like a wonderful antique someone uncovered from hundreds of years ago! I love it!

I love that you didn't attempt to smooth the outer part of the bowl perfectly, the holes really add to the overall look of it .. fantastic 👍

You're a genuine artist. I love the way you can see the potential in a piece of wood that would otherwise land up in the trash. Nicely done.
Thanks

I think its maple
Actually I’m a tree burl expert and if my calculations are correct this is a water chestnut
I'm so pleased that you left some of the natural blemishes. They certainly enhance the piece.
It's so simple, and that's precisely what makes it So Beautiful. Absolutely love it.

Nice job. Beautiful work on a beautiful piece of wood. And, thank you, no ads. I will always watch an addles video.
Gorgeous piece,
Dr's should prescribe watching your video's for stress relief Andy. 😊
Nice to see a piece that doesn't drown the wood in epoxy. I much prefer the natural beauty of wood grain
A lovely piece. Well done. Thank you for not spoiling it with horrid resin, as so many on here do.
Beautiful piece of timber and great work to bring the best out of it.
Thank you very much!
You make it look a
easy, but I can only imagine how long it took you to learn this craft and it is amazing,
Beautiful! Makes me wish I'd paid more attention in woodworking class 1968!
You make me envious. I really miss my wood turning. Unfortunately I can no longer do that work due to allergies from the shavings and dust.
Gorgeous. It’s like my pottery throwing but horizontally!
Great piece Andy. I've been away from your videos for a while but my absence doesn't seem to have had any negative impact on your turning skills!
Thankyou and thanks for coming back
