Woodturning - Turning a Lidded Jewelry Box [Gorgeous Black Ash Burl & Gabon Ebony]

  • This week I'm showing one method of how to make a lidded box or jar, using a nice block of black ash burl and little Gabon ebony for a knob / finial. It should be pretty easy to follow the process, but there are a decent number of steps in this project. I use several different tools on this one, including a few different bowl gouges, a skew, and a round nose scraper. Overall, the piece turned out very well; I think this is probably the nicest thing to come out of my shop in several weeks.
New for this video... multiple angles with picture-in-picture to help you get a clearer look at what I'm doing! I also summarize each step along the way, so I hope some of you find that helpful.
Something I learned while making this video is that I seem to be somewhat allergic to ebony wood. My forearms became a little red and itchy from the dust landing on them, but some cortisone cream cleared it up quickly. Obviously, it would be bad to breathe that in, so please use a respirator and be especially aware if you have sensitive skin or allergies. I'm also allergic to some rosewood varieties and to banksia pods, so if those bother your allergies, you might want to be extra careful with ebony.
I hope you enjoy the video and learn a little something from it. Thanks a lot for watching!

Please note, my videos are for entertainment only. They are simply demonstrations and are NOT intended to be instructional. Proper training and experience are essential before attempting to use any woodworking equipment. Do not attempt projects or techniques that are beyond your skill level or your comfort level! Serious accidents can happen in an instant and bandaging wounds or sitting in an emergency room is much less fun than woodturning. You are always responsible for your own safety. The only rules are: 1) Be careful; 2) Have fun.

Chad, you are very talented. I'm not bad ..but I am not as good as you.
I am new on this activity (despite been 80 year old), I do lathe to keep me busy, and I am learning looking at you all those little details very important that are like little secrets to make a master piece.
    Thank you.

This piece of wood clearly has a special place in your heart, whether or not there's a sentimental story associated. Watching every second of this video was mezmerizing, from the precise way each cut was made, to the elegant (sorry can't think of a masculine way to say that) way you held the tools. The piece is exquisite, thank you for sharing your artistry with the world!

Thank you very much! That's very kind of you to say. And I'm okay with the word "elegant". 😁

Stunning! I wonder if the edge of the lid needed an ebony veneer to help delineate between the lid and the box, but this looks great! All the best. Ray

What did you use for finish on this project?

  • @PaperDragons

You NEED at least a few seconds of slow, close, well-lit panning or rotating shots of the final product. We need to see the detail, the pattern in the grain. Thanks for sharing with us.

Yeah, I agree. That was an oversight; the oiling and showing of the piece at the end shouldn't have been time lapse. I added a finished pic as the thumbnail, but I realize that doesn't show much. The full set of photos will be posted on my Instagram and Facebook tomorrow. Funny (surprising) thing is, on the viewer retention graphs most people drop off at the end of the turning, but before the photos I used to include, which is why I stopped showing a series of photos at the end and only show me holding and rotating the pieces at the lathe most of the time. Thanks for the feedback and for watching!

@@ChadEamesWoodWorks I just re-read my comment and it was too harsh. I watched these videos because I love the work and want to try it one day. Keep up the good work.

Thank you! I use a 1:1:1 mix of boiled linseed oil, polyurethane, and mineral spirits.
