Sycamore Vase With Green Resin Fill [Entire Process]

  • Watch as I work with resin and turn a sycamore vase with a green epoxy fill. Turning wood is definitely my preference, but this piece of sycamore seemed perfect to fill with resin. The tree had been invaded by ants that burrowed tunnels throughout the wood, so I tried to keep some of those interesting voids in the blanks that I cut.
While I do show you the entire process of coloring, mixing, casting, turning, sanding, and finishing, I don't explain everything in detail, so you might want to familiarize yourself with the basics of working with resin to help you better understand the process. I'm still learning about it myself; this is maybe my fifth or sixth resin piece, but each time I learn a new lesson or two. This time I learned that a little bit of TransTint dye goes a long way in resin - the green definitely came out darker than I had intended.
You might notice a difference in the video quality... and maybe some issues with focus (both the lens AND me). I started using some new video equipment, and the picture seems significantly better. I'm also learning new editing software, so apologies for anything that might be out of whack. Thanks for watching, sharing, and subscribing! I really appreciate all the support and positive feedback!

Proper training and experience are essential before attempting to use any woodworking equipment. Do not attempt projects or techniques that are beyond your skill level or your comfort level! Serious accidents can happen in an instant and bandaging wounds or sitting in an emergency room is much less fun than woodturning. You are always responsible for your own safety. Hey Chad, the project looks great! Happy to see you exercise a lot of patience to make it happen. There is a Japanese turner whose specialty (it would seem) is turning out work where the sides are almost so thin as to be translucent. He mounts a row of led lights under the front edge of the tool support to give him a really clear view when he gouges out the interior. Just thought I'd let you know. Best wishes and stay healthy, eh!

That's a good idea... I've been looking for a good way to mount lights for thin turning. I may have to give that some thought. Thanks!

Chad. Nice video. I had the same issue with my HF pot with the relief valve popping off. I found a screw adjustment on the valve that solved the problem.

Yep, someone clued me in on that and I adjusted mine... works perfectly now. Thanks for watching!

Very nice work. I like the dark color. I do agree about the pressure valve. Took me a while to fine tune mine. I have the same setup. Lots of RUclips on setting the valve. All in all, beautiful vase. 🤙👍

Thank you! Already fixed the valve thanks to everyone's comments! Seems to be working correctly now.

Chad - your precision and attention to detail inspires me to do better! I really liked how this turned out and appreciate you showing the steps. I can’t wait to get a pressure pot one day and start some resin work. Well done! 👏👏

Those safety valves can be adjusted..... Better than just bypassing them all together. You do lovely work and it would be awful to have you injured by something that has an easy fix.

I have since adjusted the valve, after several comments and it appears to be working okay. Thanks!

I can tell you have been practicing talking to the camera you seem a bit more relaxed! Cool project I intend to try some of this inlay or resin stuff in the future. Thanks for sharing your work! Have a great weekend.

Thanks, I'm getting more used to the camera... the hard part is remembering everything I need to say, while not rambling into excruciating detail. I appreciate the feedback!

First viewer! I would have thought that the resin would have oozed through the masking tape. Love all the future projects on the shelves behind you. Nice vase -- well done.

Thanks! Yeah, it seems like everyone says they have problems with that HF valve, so I just assumed mine was faulty too. I'll have to do some troubleshooting. Thanks for watching!
