I'm gonna be honest, I'm a little surprised that it wasn't obvious to you guys in the finale of Season 2 that Duck was out! Don pulled a "it's me or him" and its pretty obvious which one has more value to the company. And the whole "This isn't going to effect the deal is it?" was in response to Duck realizing he fucked up, blowing up, and storming out, Duck was out of the picture the minute that conversation ended. Roger and Bert wanted to make sure the deal could go ahead without Duck, and that he wasn't a vital part of the deal!

"Is he (Jamie) legit?" One of the top 3 most interesting questions of this series, I think. Also ... One thing the show tries to convey at this point but doesn't always come through enough is that to most of the Seven Kingdoms, sounding the alarm about the White Walkers is like demanding the U.S. military in our world put all its resources into defending against UFOs, or zombies. They've heard of White Walkers, but as ancient mythology, or maybe more accurately like a past threat of Neanderthals -- existing at one time but now widely considered extinct. Most people view The Wall as more of a convenient place to send criminals, and at times for disgraced nobles and semi-nobles to go ... like Jon Snow.

nobody watched the office until it was on streaming? you're rewriting history there. it was officially 'Must See TV' and NBC's highest rated scripted series. Has it gone on to even more success in streaming? yes. but it was 100% a 'hit' tv show. There's a reason it got so many seasons.

Great episode. Going to chat about some of the themes: This episode highlights another microcosm of the sweeping changes in British and Irish life at this period in time, the increase in University educated populace. Erin's "I wanted to be the first in the family to go to University" is a thought many teenagers from working class backgrounds would've had at the time. I know there was an element of that with my elder sister since neither of my parents attended uni (although an Aunt had) In the 70s, there were only 38 registered Universities in the UK and only 14% of 18yo entered university. This is compared to ~50% now. Later Gen X and early Millennials were the first cohorts where university became a widespread viable option after leaving school, no matter your background. This is down to changes in the education system from 80s-10s (eg Further and Higher Education Act 1992 confirmed Polytechnics as fully fledged universities, expanding options and reducing the amount of sub-degree courses at those institutions). But huge societal changes also played a part, especially for "provincial" areas where heavy industries died out in the 80s and the amount of apprenticeships available to 16-18yo decreased massively. Also Mary's doubt that she could pursue tertiary education separate from her role as a working class housewife was very real. Options for adults further education had definitely improved since the introduction of the Open University in 1969 and was further improved with other changes to education. Liberalisation of women also played a part (Sarah's comment on "feminism") and the increasing need for households to have 2 regular incomes changed the dynamics. It's beautiful how much you can glean from a well written sitcom.

Not sure you can compare the 6 counties to Britain, the class thing is far less important here, it was the religion/politics that meant we were less likely to go to university. The British and the ruling unionists tried to keep us down for being Irish Catholics, not because of being any class system. Our schools were hugely underfunded compared to protestant schools, even when they built more universities they built them in PUL areas not Catholic ones. Most of the big businesses here wouldn't hire Catholics, there was no point going to university and doing engineering knowing Harland and Wolff would take one look at your surname and school and throw your application away. Most people who went university was to become doctors, lawyers, dentists and other jobs that they could serve our community and make money (or leave this place). The one thing they couldn't dictate was how and who we spent our money on. The well off Catholics mainly made their money from Catholic customers in the community. Places like Derry have a huge Catholic majority population and the class thing is more an intercommunity thing as those who originally made money from the Catholic pound continued to thrive in following generations. This would be Jenny and her family as an example. Obviously the mid to late 90's did see a huge change in lots of things and it was a very hopeful and positive aura across Ireland and Britain and what you describe is also true and was also a part of it but Derry is such a unique place that there's always more to it.

It will be interesting to keep track on which characters you think are the best or worst, and whether those views change as you get to see more of them. The show is good at fleshing out characters to get beyond a simple division into good guys and bad guys. (Though some remain simply awful!)

Ned is absolutely the best. Every character on this show veers left or right of "decent", sometimes all the way to horrible ... but Ned is the center. He's possibly the best man in the realm. He treats others with respect, but with what they deserve. And his children are amazing, too. Because they learned from him. I think Robert Baratheon is a pretty good King. He's a man, and has all the foibles that men tend to have (he drinks and eats too much, laughs at others misfortune). It'll be interesting to see how his story progresses. The nights watch are a necessity. "Winter is coming" means something in this world, and they understand that. They're kinda like the Jedi in Star Wars, a necessary organization there to keep peace from something others don't understand. But they're still made up of men, and in this show "men" are generally flawed. lol

The show was too good for regular audiences at the time. It’s just too quick. The first 3 seasons is a constant barrage of quick-fire jokes that call back to other jokes, fold over into others, with jokes inside of jokes inside of jokes, that all have payoffs not only within the same episode, but later on in the season or following seasons. It’s endlessly quotable, with high rewatch value, and the more you watch the more hysterical it becomes. Totally agree that each character is unique and the actors all bring their A-game. The cameos are awesome. So fun. Glad to see this on a reaction channel.

I don't like heights, roller coasters that drop you down quickly, or horror movies. I watched this movie because of the dark mystery and figuring out what happened, but I'm still not a fan of the creepy stuff and jump scares.

I think you make a great point, Joe, that they gave us time to get to know Nina and actually like her, so by the end what happens to her is shocking and sad and painful. I'm not sure I would have felt that way after the end of season 1, but by the time it happens here, I was truly stunned and felt the loss. It's extra cruel that they felt the need to tell her that her sentence would be carried out "shortly" so that she had time to be terrified and upset. They didn't have to do it that way. She had been helpful to them at some point -- but there was still no mercy. Tragic, for sure.
