Were The British Really That Dumb?
When it comes to the British Army that fought in the American War of Independence, so much of what is in the public conscience falls rather far from the mark. In this video we take a look at some of the inaccurate tropes that are common place in society and how they're damaging to the understanding of America.

The Service and Sacrifice of the British Soldier in Boston
Просмотров 12 тыс.Год назад
The American War of Independence is monolithic mythos that continues to impact our world in every single day in so many facets. It's flatly engrained in the conciseness of the American spirit. The British regulars who served are nothing more than a side note. Today, we take a humanistic look at their lives during the occupation of Boston in the early 1770s. This video is part of the "War is Hel...

Protectors of the Oil: British Soldiers in Mesopotamia, WWI

The Evolution of British Reenacting Redcoats
Просмотров 6 тыс.2 года назад
Over the past 50 years, the American War of Independence hobby has evolved and changed quite significantly, it's transitioned from a much more ceremonial institution from the days of the Bicentennial, to one that's a lot more akin to the 18th Century and what it actually did. The redcoats that are worn in the reenacting hobby are no different, they have also evolved and changed with the course ...
Unboxing a Khaki Sola Pith Hat

In the first half of the 20th Century, the Wolseley Sun Helmet reigned supreme as the headwear of choice for British soldiers in tropical stations. Along side it, in a smaller setting, the Khaki Sola Pith Hat also served, eventually supplanting it in on Indian service in 1939, on the eve of the Second World War. The Art of Pith Helmet Puggaree Wrapping
Просмотров 19 тыс.3 года назад
When it comes to pith helmets, British ones in particular, a puggaree is an essential component to them. Regrettably, most modern reproduction helmets feature a lackluster puggaree, or don't even feature one altogether. One of the helmets most important and iconic features, treated like an afterthought by makers. Even more disparaging, there's very little out there on how to make one yourself. ...

USA Modification - I have a United States Marine pith helmet and wanted to add a puggaree similar to this video. The USMC style is slightly different having a smaller puggaree. My solution was 14 inches length of one inch wide ivory color ribbon(cotton or poly) that closely resembles the original pug. It is surprisingly easy to wrap and twist. Pin it on to practice the wraps, pin at the base and wrap/twist it from top to bottom. Wrap it tight. When you get it correctly and the twists aligned, then you can permanently affix it. This video definitely helped guide me in the correct direction, thanks for compiling this video of this unique craft!

While I agree that charger loading on these types of rifles is faster you also need to account for the fact that a professional soldier trains over and over with drills. I wouldn’t even hazard a guess at how many hours of my life was spent in weapons handling, stoppage drills and kit setup. I just found your channel, keep it up!

I bought some kind of corned beef from a discount store in the U.S. that was made in Australia. It was full of what i assumed was fat, but texturally acted like plastic. Round cans, and after examining the product i didn't try heating it up. Tried it on the cats. They ate around whatever the weird stuff was.

Is it known when white leatherwork became fashionable? When looking at soldiers from the early 1700s, I see them wearing buff crossbelts. Which nation was the first to introduce white crossbelts? I'd imagine it was one that had predominantly white uniforms, like the French, Austrians, Spanish and Saxons.

yes the finished edge of those original parties has what is called a salvage on each side just like on a full bolt of cloth. Trying to get a company to set up a machine to make those right as possible I don't know if anyone has ever asked. a friend of mine approached a mill in I think North Carolina to make real Civil War era wool sateen for frock coats, dress coats and they said they could duplicate what was made in the 1850s and 60s but you had to order about $10,000 worth. Which is doable if you get subscribers to pitch in enough for making your civilian and military coats and pants. You have to kind of approach it like that.

No idea why they decided to go with a 5 round mag in the P13 / P14 I feel if they did make the P13 or just something similar to a SMLE with a 7mm rimless cartridge that did not use cordite, good sights like on later SMLEs, front locking lugs with controlled feeding, preferable a shorter bolt travel and a bolt that had a sub 90 degree bolt thow prefrsble 60, a smoother stripper clips as in Mauser just close the boot rule and have it more accursed and lighter it would be amazing.. After the war If NATO went with the .270 Brit (7mm British) intermediate cartridge. I'm sure it would still be in service today and modern loads could get a 100g bullet close to 3000fps or even more 7.62 NATO was a mistake better to stay with it or .30 06mm or a .338 round for machine guns and long range rifles. Ironicaly .270 Brit has the same bore size as the new .277 fury that the US is using in it's new M5.... I have shot commercial SMLEs (ones officers would buy and civilians could outside of wartime) the quality and accuracy is just so smooth. I also shit one converted to .308 and it's amazing also an accurate P17 in .308 and that's great also but no 10 round mag but it will fit 6... I have had some rough and sporterized .303 rifles (all had very rough leads and headspace issues) had both a SMLE and a Martini Endeild converted to .54r bore diameter is the same so the barrels have to be removed and depending on the lead errosion not much has to be cut off. Rechambered in .54r with a reamer and finishing reamer then also polished, tight headspace set and extractor groove recut. The smle mag only needed a little fiddling around to get right, both had a little muzzle errosion but not much needed tk be cut at all then elrecriwned, very accurate with what was then cheap milsurp ammo. The smle can also be converted to 7.62x39 .303, .54r x39 tok and all types of 7.7 Japanese have the same bore diameter. I have a chamber insert in my late war Arisaka T99 ( around the time they stopped chroming the barrels) and it works great, I can allways remove it if I want to and readjust the mag. It's common for Vickers guns to be rechambered in ,.54r, Lewis guns can be but you need to find russian mags and same with brens but they could all probably be converted to x39 The Japanese uses 7.7R ( direct copy of .303) But they had 7.7SR for machine guns then 7.7 for rifles and some machine guns. So 7.7 Japanese rimless is just rimless .303

Liked this video even before I watched it! And it did not disappoint. Enjoyed your unboxing room-the way you decorated it. And of course the gorgeous “pith hats” on display. I only have the synthetic ones bought online. Wear them around town especially when sunny and hot. Get nice compliments! Appreciate your channel. Learned a ton about these hats. Sometimes people ask me about my hat and thanks to what I learned from you I can sound pretty knowledgeable. The most memorable compliment I received was from an attractive young woman. She simply said, “I like your hat.” I said, trying to be my usual modest self, “Thank you. It provides good protection from the sun.” She then said that she didn’t care about the sun protection and that she just likes a good hat! Fun little conversation, but it worried me a little because the guy she was with seemed bothered by all the attention his girl was giving me😮!

I made a Pith Helmet for a Tarzan and Jane Theme Cosplay. I used a helmet pattern from Muchprops and got lucky when I found this video on how to wrap the helmet to make a Puggaree. I bought 5 yards of 1" wide bias tape from Amazon for $5. That was enough bias tape for a six-layer wrap. No chin strap yet. You made the Puggaree wrapping instructions pretty clear, but I didn't wrap the axis crossings as neatly aligned as yours, still, I'm happy. I used some fabric glue to hold the start end and the final end to stay in place. PS: the bias tape has no stretch, but it has enough texture to grip the matte paint finish I put on the helmet. Thanks for solving my dilemma to get the final detail (Puggaree) that I wanted.

I won't say the British were dumb. Their leadership was rigid though and didn't adapt so well, they fought alongside the Indians in the French-Indian war, why there aren't more stories of British guerillas hints that they didnt adapt those tactics. Yes, pressure from the French helped, as did Prussian mercenaries. Overall, the British were over-extended on numerous fronts.

I see I am late to the party. One of the advantages of the chargers is that you can carry dozens of them. They take up way less room so even if you could could have got your hands on a crap load of magazines back in the day the bulk and weight of them would limit what you could carry.

  • @MrReded69

You should hang the magazine bag under your web gear to keep it from moving around. Maybe move the canteen carrier behind you and place the mag bag in its place. For the empty mags, you should have an empty drop bag on your left hip. Simplifies removing the mag with your left and dropping it in the left bag. Or, while wearing Pattern '37 battle dress trousers, keep the left thigh utility pocket empty and open. Just an idea.
