- When I purchased a 1942 Wolseley Sun Helmet, I never thought I'd be a creator of its destruction. The infamous pattern of pith helmet was deemed a restricted item by the British post, the apparent reason...it was illegal under arms control. It being restricted, it could potentially be destroyed, so here's the story of how I tried to save the WWII curio.

@@AdventureUntamed23 I don’t what the hell is going on at eBay, but somethings dodgey. I think I’m going to make a beware video, because this also happened to another mate of mine, with a Wolseley as well. This is just damn ridiculous.
@@TheFarOffStation That sounds like a fine idea! Maybe if the sellers can be convinced to ship via their own methods, rather than eBay's preferred way, we can stave off any more of these tragedies. @@AdventureUntamed23 I definitely think it might. I know with my KSPH, the sellers was going to ship it eBay GSP, and I asked him to just send it Royal Mail, and it safely arrived. I agree, it’s the best way.

Ran into itar many times. But never had anything get intercepted or destroyed. It really come down to how it’s labeled. Shame.
It is indeed. Such a simple mistake for such drastic potential consequences, all someone had to do was inspect the box, I suppose that would take too much effort...
ITAR does specify some things against body armor, but it specifies specific grades of modern body armor, so even with that, an 80 year old helmet which is only as effective as a bike helmet shouldn't be restricted
The more we’ve looked into it, it really seem like it’s some bullshit that eBay pulls through its GSP. The motive though, is quite unclear.

Count yourself lucky for never running into this, it's ridiculous. Which impression did you see? I'm getting to the point where I can't even keep track 😂 I'm not entirely sure how much more there is I can do, every interaction is them saying they can't do anything whilst I provide info to what they say. Perhaps there's more I could do, but there so hell bent on not helping, that it's just too straining. I bet it'll get opened buy some agent, see nothings illegal, and someone will love their new free helmet.

The sad thing is the helmet might’ve been the seller’s ancestors’ helmet.
In this instance it luckily wasn’t, so that’s at least a mighty fine good thing!

What options they just took the helmet gave you youre money back the original owner was hopfully refunded too but instead of making 2 people happy ebay made them angry and destroyed a beatiful historical piece of hat wear

Apparently they refunded the seller, but they did keep the helmet.

There are a few reasons, firstly there's never usually dilemmas like this, things generally go pretty smooth, secondly, if I can afford to buy original items to collect, I jump on the opportunity, as much as I like to reenact, I've very much been enjoying getting in collecting on the small level in which I have. Form wise, the repros are a wee bit off in places, they seem a little more boaty than originals, despite them being off in certain regards, I don't think they're that bad. In the future I do plan on getting a repro for if I should use my Wolseley topped kits for any sort of more strenuous use, for lighter use, I have no problem with the originals. Also, the repros usually come with no puggarees which makes life an absolute pain, because in military service they always had a puggaree.

what the actual frak????? this is insane!!! this stinks of some petty bureaucrat throwing their weight around combined with ignorance as to what a sun helmet is as opposed to a battle helmet. what utter BS!!!

It is a military helmet, and as such is PPE. I’m afraid they are well in their rights to do this. And by the way this is entirely the fault of the US I’m British and I order actual military items, reloading equipment, body armour, ballistic helmets, firearm related items from mainland Europe and they are marked as military but they always get through, sometimes I have to talk with customs agents but there is never a problem
The issue stems from eBay, not a government entity, as if it were, a talk with customs would easily have been in order. Even so, it does not matter, helmets do not fall under ITAR, so the point is mute. The US has nothing to do with it, because it never reached an entity of the country.
I mean, it's not a helmet, it's a hat that's sometimes called a helmet. This carousel of nonsense is only happening due to somebody, or even just a program, seeing the word "helmet" in a military context and immedicable flag it as needing an arms export requirement. You could call them up on this or send a lawyer if it's really valuable
Such is life in the age of tech.

I believe it has more to do with liability culture.
Check your own video. Min 8:49 you state that ITAR includes PPE, personal protection equipment. A military helmet fits that description. So, yes! your helmet violates ITAR. Nextime: Souvenir helmet.
The customs declaration makes no mention, so like no. But it’s all mute because the government didn’t make the decision, a private company did. Try again.
