  • During the Second World War, raw materials were in short supply in all different areas, one of those materials for everyone's favorite Wolseley Sun Helmet was also in short supply, cork. Come see how Britain economised their infamous helmet, and how economising the Wolseley wasn't a new feat, plus, we see how an a economy Wolseley stacks up against it's cork counterpart.

    Excellent video sir! I have a felt Wolseley in splendid condition. I purchased it in the late 1960s when I was about ten years old, I thought it was the most fantastic looking headgear I had ever seen! Despite playing in it as a child it's still in great condition, and is completely intact and has retained its shape. I purchased it in an ex government store for a few shillings, I remember there was a massive box full of them, all unissued! Your video is most informative, I was aware that mine was a wartime issue because it's dated 1942, but I was unaware (until now) of the cork/felt differences.

    Completely agree with the beauty of the thin-rimmed original Wolseleys vis-a-vis the clunky repros. I wouldn't be too hard on SOF, though. There's many sources for the repros, and they ALL have the clunky-thick rims. That's because they're mostly manufactured in Vietnam. And the [North] Vietnamese pith was a knock-off of a French colonial pith helmet, France having [unfairly] dominated Vietnam for so many decades. And as you can guess, the French pith had a thicker rim. So it seems that whomever is responsible for the various repro pith helmets being made in Vietnam today WAS able to modify the outward appearance of the helmets into the Zulu-pattern, the Wolseley-pattern, etc., they chose to keep same rim thickness on all of them in order to save on production costs. Probably a good idea, since 95% of modern people buying them couldn't care less about the precise historical accuracy of the measuremnts, especially if it means adding $30 or $40 to the end cost. I DO wish there was someone who DID make an entirely-accurate one for us nerdy 5-percenters, though. :-/

      Nat Sooy here in the US is making Wolseleys. They look better than the regular run of the mill Vietnam repros, but no idea what something like that would cost. Shame WPG stopped making their repros, the images I've seen of those looked relatively good!

    Hello! Do you know whether British soldiers in the Far East wore service respirators in the alert position?
    Also, I would assume puttees were used in the earlier battles prior to being replaced by gaiters. How common were WWI long puttees in combat?
    I’m asking because of scale modeling/wargame reasons, I have WWI colonials with 1908 webbing, and there are currently no WWII figures with tropical service helmets

    • @TheFarOffStation
      @TheFarOffStation  3 года назад +1

      Hey, Jeff! On the whole in the Far East, service respirators were worn in the alert position during combat and combat training. They can clearly be seen in the photographs. On regular non combat duties, they were not used, as there would obviously be no risk of gas.
      As for puttees, it is very much dependent upon the unit, generally speaking for 1941, short puttees are the most common. The average British, Indian, and Colonial units appear with them. That being said, units such as the Canadian ones in HK are still wearing long puttees. A lot of the local defense corps in the region are also seen with long puttees. Shorties appear to be the norm, but it really depends upon the unit you look at.
      Is there a particular WWII action you're trying to wargame? As for your colonials, what kind of headwear do they have? During the campaigns in Malaya, Burma, and HK, during the fighting, they're almost exclusively wearing steel helmets, normally the MK II's. If for some odd reason their not, whether there's a lull, or some other reason, they have the Khaki Solar Pith Hat, the official replacement to the Wolseley. If you're trying to portray the average soldier in the Far East, you could probably use North Africa figures, the kit is somewhat analogous. Let me know what you're trying to do!

      @@TheFarOffStation I was thinking of Malaya, but also of the British army ops in Iraq in 41 and Vichy Syria. I believe South African units wore a modified pith helmet in East Africa in combat, so I thought some British units did the same. My figures have Wolseleys but at 25mm, I’d say the differences are negligible. Thanks for the info!

    • @TheFarOffStation
      @TheFarOffStation  3 года назад

      @@jeffli1243 Malaya and the Middle East are almost identical kit wise. There are some really great shots of the troops in front for the refineries in Persia. There's also some good photos of the troops in Iraq with the Khaki Solar Pith too. British Tropical is somewhat the same, big changes don't really occur until 1943. Anyway, good gaming, and let me know if you need any more info. Cheers!
