      He survived the war but was wounded in the legs with shrapnel that eventually led to his death years later due to gangrene.. he also sustained a bayonet wound on his hand…. Quick question, I’ve seen photos of the Connaught Rangers in Mesopotamia and noticed in the latter stages a lot of the men ditched their Pith Helmets for Brodies.. Was this common in the latter stages of the war in the Middle East?

      @@aaronmcdonnell5540 you do see it, it honestly just seems to vary without a tremendous amount of rhyme or reason. The regiment that you see me in here never seems to have had them with the photographic evidence I’ve seen.

    Wow. What an interesting video! It's not common for this campaign to have a mention (especially from an American). My great-great grandfather was in the 9th Royal Warwickshire Regiment that was in the 39th Infantry Brigade that was in the 13th western division that you noted. Fun Fact: Bill Slim (the famed general in Burma during ww2) was also in the 9th Royal Warwicks. After the capture of Baghdad, my ancestor moved to the Somerset Light Infantry and was apart of the 74th yeomanry just in time for Gaza in October 1917. He would get shell shock during the battle and returned home to be treated.
    He was Pvt. Joseph Henry Wain (1884-1928)

    Great presentation, thank you for covering the Mesopotamian campaign.
    I recall the Queen Elizabeth class battleships were the first dreadnaughtsto use oil instead of coal like the Iron Duke class.And this is one factor making Mesopotamia a strategic target.

    • @TheFarOffStation
      @TheFarOffStation  2 года назад +1

      You're very welcome, glad to see that you enjoyed it! That's correct the QE's were the first all oil powered capital ships of the fleet, the preceding classes were dual fueled by both coal and oil. As we know, aside from the navy, over the Great War, petroleum fuels would play a greater and greater role.

    • @TheFarOffStation

      The kits used at Gallipoli would be fairly different, Service Dress was almost exclusively used there. Though you do get Wolseley’s popping up there, but they don’t seem to have been very popular in that campaign. The kits used in Mesopotamia and Palestine/Egypt are pretty much the same though.

    • @TheFarOffStation
      @TheFarOffStation  Год назад +3

      Eh, all the ones on the common market are pretty much all the same, some just have different features here or there, but they all share the same shells from Vietnam. Warwicks in Australia has the best dressed up one, but that’s it. For repros, the absolute best is having a repro made by Nat Sooy, but don’t expect to pay “cheap” prices.

    Some 700,000 indians were part of the fighting force in mesopotamia in WW1, actually their number was overwhelming. If you surf the Basra Memorial, you will find names of 40000 soldiers who lost their lives here in WW1 and 33000 were indians. When you see the pics, you can recognize them by their traditional turbans, round their heads. But vlogger of this programme did not utter a single word about their uniform.
