  • Last month, on social media, I posted a picture of myself in this newly completed kit, a Private of the 2nd Battalion, The Loyal (North Lancashire) Regiment in Singapore, before the out break of war in the Far East in December of 1941. With it's garnering of interest, I thought that I'd make a video going into a little bit more depth. For those interested in British Empire and Commonwealth forces in the Far East around this period, I highly recommend the Facebook page " British Empire & Commonwealth Forces in the Far East-SE Asia 1937-1946"

Excellent well done... its incredible to think we are still today picking this equipment out of the gardens and parklands that predate the war in Singapore. At the time of surrender many men simply through their kit away into their slit trenches... only to be found 75 years later by the archaeologists ... See Adam Park Project ... battlefield for the 1st Cambs. The Loyals ended up fighting in their own barracks at Gillman and the tenants in the remaining Married Quarters still find expended ammunition in their gardens alongside WW1 rounds expended during the 1915 Mutiny... crazy place t live !!

Wow, I had no idea that there were such intense archeology going on, and that so much was known in regards to exact placements! I’ll have to check out what you’re talking about, as that’s exactly the kind of stuff I’ve been trying to look into! That’s all so very cool, and stuff all the way back to the mutiny! I wish I’d know more about all of this stuff when I was there in 2016, regrettably my family from there has moved and it makes going to S’pore slightly more challenging……

During the Childers Reforms of 1881, a few different regiments were amalgamated together, one of the regiments that created the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment was the 81st Foot (Loyal Lincoln Volunteers), and so that name carried over. In the 1920s the parlance became the Loyal Regiment (North Lancashire). Less of a grand story, but load Victory anyway, never know when you might need her!

I joined the Loyal Regiment in 1956 when most of the senior NCOs had served with the regiment when Singapore fell. My platoon sergeant, like many others, had been a POW of the Japanese. In 1957 the regiment arrived back in Singapore to engage in the Malayan Emergency. You've done an excellent job with the uniform with two minor mistake - the hose tops (socks) were grey and the war started in 1939 not 1941.

Yes, I have photos of them at the end of the video in their steel helmets, they would of course only be worn during combat. In Malaya, MkII helmets are certainly the most common, in places such as as Hong Kong, most units still had MkI “Brodie’s”, the WWI era helmet. Grey? Did you happen to see this in a photo or something? Sometimes in colorized photos, things don’t always get colored properly and can show inaccurate colors.
