Evening again. So you're building your own custom Comma unit? That's the impression that I'm getting. Nonetheless, fingers crossed. Since Halloween is near, let me test your knowledge of horror-themed video game levels with two words: Shalebridge Cradle.
@@tonyc.0451 gonna attempt the “Comma Zero” which was defunct for a while since Comma removed USB camera support but recently brought it back! Without googling I don’t know the horror game reference. I still need to finish Half Life: Alyx in VR, but got to scared on a level and ran into a wall.
@@bryan.deleon So your custom unit will support USB? Can't go wrong with that unless the USB ports don't work. So you haven't heard of the 2004 game Thief: Deadly Shadows, then. That's fine. The Shalebridge Cradle level separates young'uns from the grown-ups. Speaking of Half-Life: Alyx, which level made you stop for a while? Also hope that you're not injured from running into a wall. I sprained my left wrist in September from lifting cement bricks too quickly.
@@tonyc.0451 yes it will use PC components with USB cameras for road view and driver monitoring. I have heard of Thief but never played of the games before. I stopped playing HL:A during the house level infested with head crabs. The jumps scares are expected but they still get me lol
@@bryan.deleon You don't have to deal with RJ45 cables, right? You mentioned those a few months back. If you've heard of System Shock, that game had similar graphics from the first two Thief games since they were developed by Looking Glass Studios. Some gaming history for ya'. Freakin' headcrabs.
@@tonyc.0451 the RJ45 was used to provide offline power to the Comma units and also getting “fingerprint” data from the vehicle. I’m assuming I have to hardcode this PC build to my car, so it only needs to interface with my ADAS camera connections.

@@theclueguy3388 I will try to see about repairing my broken Comma Three. Are the first happy buyers already known, who would unpack and use the final product of Epilog Sidecar on video. I came across a discussion that this is a "fraudulent company collecting money from enthusiasts", a finished product from real buyers could dispel some of the doubts. Do you have to unplug sidecar when car is turn off? Just wondering if it drains cars battery when its plug in if car is off.
@@GoogleReviewer8041 I never unplugged after installing it, and only took it off when Epilog requested the unit. My Comma Two and Comma Three used to kill my car battery, and it made me worried enough to install a solar panel on my hood to trickle charge my car’s 12v battery (not the hybrid packaged battery) - especially when camping. Sorry of that does not help lol
@@bryan.deleoncomma 3 doesn't kill my battery tho. BTW, how do I get the sunny pilot fork? Is it still the best?
@@ralfosha_x my Rav4 Hybrid has two batteries. The 12v which essentially just turns on the electronics, and the traction battery which is the one handling starter motor, lights, etc. The 12v is what also powers Comma, and it might be too weak. I have a solar panel that trickle charges it for camping, so I don’t have the issue anymore. I hear FrogPilot might be better than SunnyPilot now but I don’t know since I don’t have a working Comma device lol github.com/FrogAi/FrogPilot github.com/sunnypilot/sunnypilot

@@bryan.deleonwhat car is most compatible for comma ?
@@HazzaALshamsi-sg4jy I would argue that Toyota’s without “security key” are the vehicles with the most rounded OpenPilot experience. HGK platforms get a lot of praise, but I keep reading about disabled emergency braking systems and poor braking behaviors; but they seem to have the most “potential”. All in all, buy a a car you want - with or without OpenPillot. I’ve experienced my Comma Two and Comma Three dying, but still like owning and using my RAV4.
Great video! Thanks for posting. Question -- do you think some of the speed issues (going too slow, etc) would be alleviated by using Comma Prime directly instead of the hotspot and Mapbox integrations?
No. They pull the speed data from the same source - Open Street Maps. Edit: I just re-read your question - in stock form with Comma Prime, the speed OpenPilot chooses is based on e2e training; it doesn't care about posted speed limits since it decides how fast it wants to go based on what it sees in the current scene. Also note, Comma has removed Navigate on Openpilot in their software due to low performance - good choice imho lol
Mr One plans to make a decoupled device. I may purchase one when he does. I really think the best thing about comma are the forks. FP and SP forks are just so good now. BTW I did the west coast road trip last week with my c3x, so we may have passed each other. Doing HWY 1 in far NorCal, mapped based turn slow down is a must. Came back on the 5 and that was straight enough that slow downs were mostly not needed.
Also, there's services being offered on OP enthusiast discord for comma device repair. Not sure on their reputation though

The unit indeed records footage based on its 250GB SSD storage (drivesidecar.com/product/sidecar) but access to the files is not easily accessible - nor would I recommend SideCar or even Comma C3(x) as a dashcam. Get a real dashcam, as that’s what I have done. If you visit the Comma OpenPilot Discord (which SideCar shares its software with), there are many posts where people were unable to retrieve accident/crash footage from their units; do not rely on on SideCar or Comma as dashcams.

In my experience, night driving is no problem for the comma, but I've found that the most challenging situation is in the late afternoon driving into the sun. The sun lights up the road and all the imperfections/cracks/fixes, and even I can barely see the lane lines. In this case it constantly tries to drive me into the car next to me.
Thanks for watching! I will see if my schedule allows me to hunt for the scenario you are referring to. In the past, I have found Openpilot to work surprisingly well in adverse conditions like that, but I do not know how Epilog SideCar would perform with its unique optical solution - my assumption is that the performance would be the same.
Good, ok. Chill, ok. But better than FSD v12 , definitely No, two different things altogether. FSD v12 is far superior
Thanks for watching.
Yes. And fsd requires a $35k plus vehicle and an additional $6k or $100/month. This is $650 flat. You’re comparing apples and carrots. Not even in the same food group my guy.
@@joshx413 I agree. It costs more. You can buy a Ferrari and a scooter, they both get you from A to B. I have a Tesla and a KIA with a Comma3 and I love both. I eat apples and carrots they’re both great. 👍
Love the videos on this unit. I was all in on comma but I didn’t want to stick a phone to my windshield, so this has become waaaay more appealing! I would love to see more city driving to see how it does in slower traffic with more cars around. Keep the videos coming! I’m definitely going to buy one for my Rav soon.
Thanks for watching, and safe travels with your Epilog SideCar! I only have a few more days with the unit until I have to return it to Epilog. But I’ll try to fit in some “city” driving. I’ll preface that by saying, these systems (including Comma) really aren’t meant for it; there’s only so much the unit can see, even with wide angle cameras. Check out the raw footage (it’s even cropped smaller for the model/AI) from Comma units here: github.com/commaai/comma10k/tree/master/imgs2 - look for “e” in the file names for wide cam. The model/AI in Epilog Sidecar is very likely the same model that has been trained from these exact images.
@@bryan.deleon awsome! Thanks for the info! I Appreciate your work!
