    Pinched, compressed, damaged, or inflammed vagus nerve in neck and shoulders can impact nerve signaling to the stomach and rest of GI tract. An MRI can confirm this and solid chiropractic work can improve neural firing and overall function. Improving vagal tone by restoring and healing the body’s energy pathways (e.g. nerve signaling and inflammation of muscle fascia) via chiropractic work, acupuncture, cupping, and neurofeedback can all help get to the root of the problem. Massive answers come from looking at the vagus nerve and to make sure it is at or near homeostatic function. Cheers

    My wife is facing a GP diagnosis, and she has all of the debilitating symptoms. It's new so she currently feels like a shut-in. Do you have any recommendations for store-bought shakes that don't taste sweet? She hates sweet things, which has been great for her health until now... it just seems like every nutritional supplement either has a lot of sugar or non-sugar sweeteners, which really chokes on.

      I did try Reglan not too long after I was diagnosed. For me, it caused extreme anxiety and didn't alleviate my symptoms very much, so I didn't take it for very long. I think it's an option that is certainly helpful for some people but is not appropriate or effective for everyone. Definitely a discussion to have with your doctor regarding the pros and cons in the context of your personal circumstances.

    Just curious what does a high fat cause in gastroparesis ?

    • @lwwgp
      @lwwgp 13 дней назад

      A low-fat diet is a symptom management tool for gastroparesis. That's because a meal higher in dietary fat will take longer to empty from the stomach than a meal lower in fat -- that's true for everybody, whether you have gastroparesis or not. So when you already have a delay in gastric emptying and do not want to exacerbate that delay, the advice is to reduce overall fat in the diet. A high-fat diet, then, is likely to exacerbate the symptoms of gastroparesis, including fullness, nausea, pain, bloating and/or vomiting. It doesn't damage the stomach or make the condition more severe in the long-term, but it's not great for symptom management. Hope that helps!

    I had an emptying scan this year that has showed since my last emptying scan in 2021 my gastroparesis has gotten worse since that scan so yeah I can tell my vomiting has been way worse and nausea and I don’t eat as much I used to i feel so sick all the time and also I new of someone who was at end stages of gastroparesis they where gonna pass away soon and I never heard or seen them since so it definitely can get worse

    • @lwwgp
      @lwwgp 11 дней назад

      Yes, people _can_ get worse, of course and many people do. I'm not denying or negating anyone's personal experience. But people can also get better or stay relatively the same and I think it's important to highlight the fact that delayed gastric emptying itself is not an inherently progressive condition. When someone receives the diagnosis, it doesn't mean they're going to get worse and worse forever, which is what people who contact me are often afraid of. I also think it's important to point out that often times new or worsening symptoms can be related to things like nutrition rather than a progression of gastroparesis, and nutrition is something that we're often able to address through a variety of means so it's important that that is part of the conversation, which is why I made videos like this. I'm really sorry to hear that you're struggling and that your symptoms have worsened. I hope you find something that works for you and brings you some relief. Sending you lots of good wishes!

    I was diagnosed in February, about 2 weeks before my 80th birthday. (Looking back, I've probably had this for a long time because I can't remember a time when I could eat very much at one time without extreme discomfort.) But, in February, the pain seemed to come out of nowhere -- couldn't lay down, couldn't sleep, thought it must be gall bladder, kidney stones, something. I spent a week in extreme pain and my doctor ordered many tests that all came back normal. Then, sent me to the gastro doctor for an endoscopy. Then, the gastric emptying scan. I have gone through all the mental mess about "never being able to eat anything I want again, being afraid to eat, etc.)" Today, after all this time, I came across you, Crystal, and I have been watching your videos all afternoon. Thank you, thank you! I have a whole new outlook and have learned so much from you.

    Crystal, I've followed you for years and most of your information has helped me with my gastroparesis so I'll definitely try these since you use them and they've helped you. I get a lump in my throat . Also, you just said something that stopped me in my tracks. Every evening I'm always congested and am so stuffy it is hard to breathe. I just realized when you said you get congested that it happens to me after I eat. Do you know what makes this happen? It drives me crazy. And, like you, i have reflux but PPIs have never worked. I didn't realize all of this could be from my GP. I'm on my way to these websites now to order these products. It's too bad they aren't affiliate links for you. Thank you for telling us about these products and your symptoms. I think it's provided answers that my doctor hasn't been able to answer. AGAIN!! 😊

    • @lwwgp
      @lwwgp Месяц назад

      You can open Heartburn capsules and mix with warm water and drink according to the Arrae website. Just an FYI for those who have trouble with capsules. I know sometimes they take a long time to dissolve in my stomach, so I'm actually going to be experimenting with that, as well. I follow a similar gastroparesis-friendly diet to what I recommend in my resources, so mostly low-fat, lowish fiber, smaller meals with a focus on nutrition. I don't think it's super helpful to share exactly what I eat because there is no one size fits all diet that works well for people with gastroparesis. My diet is also limited by factors that others likely don't have -- for example, my daughter has life-threatening milk, egg, and nut allergies, so we don't eat any of those in our house. I would eat differently if that weren't a factor. I'm also sensitive to certain FODMAPs, which not everyone is, and I no longer have a gallbladder, which impacts what I eat but doesn't apply to everyone. That said, some of my staples are things like chicken breast, ground turkey, potatoes, rice, quinoa, sweet potatoes, carrots, smoothies, soups, MacroBars. Lots more about diet on my website: www.livingwellwithgastroparesis.com/blog?category=Diet%20and%20Nutrition Hope that helps!

      @csaltrelli yes it helps. Thank you for taking the time to answer. I'm not diabetic and do not have a gallbladder. I also have hereditary hemochromotosis. I have been dealing with this for 7 years. I have not found a good protein powder for shakes. I have tried a few things but still a big learning curve. My goodness, I have eaten chicken every way but fried lol and turkey and some fish. I get nervous when my hair falls out or thins, among other things. I have found there is way more to this than they tell you. Thanks again!!

    Do you also take a prescription drug as well for your reflux?

    • @lwwgp
      @lwwgp Месяц назад

      I don't! I should've mentioned that in the video. I took very high doses of PPIs for many years and they never took care of my symptoms. I think likely because, for me -- and I think probably for many people with GP, it's not an issue of too much acid. Rather, it's an issue of the stomach contents being outside of the stomach and into the esophagus/upper respiratory tract, which acidic or not are still going to be irritating to those structures. I did try PPIs again not too long ago but it was giving me stomach pain and making my other gastroparesis symptoms worse so my GI doc and I agreed that's just not the solution for me. That said, I do believe you can take both of these while on a prescription reflux meds. I'd double check with your doctor but that's what their websites say. Hope that helps!

      I'm so sorry that you're struggling and that it was so hard for you to get the attention and care that you deserve. Aside from the practical steps that I recommend in my Quick Start to Gastroparesis, I think it could be really helpful to just get curious about some of the things that look really true right now. For example, what if food doesn't hate you? What if food is totally neutral and completely impersonal? Similarly, what if the functions of your body are equally impersonal and, in fact, what if your body is doing the absolute best it can for you, despite whatever circumstance it's in? Sometimes a great deal of the stress that we feel around food and eating is wrapped up in these stories that our brains have made up that look very real and true. Not to say that our physical experience isn't real -- of course it is -- but just those feelings of hating eating, etc. are often lessened when we start to question the stories that our brain has been repeating to us. Just some food for thought! Sending good wishes your way.

      I don't know but I will say that I have come to believe that our bodies are much smarter than we often give them credit for -- if your body is accumulating weight, there might be a protective reason for that. I would continue to work with your doctors/nutritionist to be sure you're getting adequate calories/nourishment on your feeds.

    I got gastroparesis after hiatal hernia surgery in 2021. It has been a struggle, especially with the flare up’s that give no warning. Eating out is no longer enjoyable when you’re limited to what you can eat. My safe place is home and knowing how my food is prepared. But I know I will get through this. Your videos are very helpful and informative so thank you!!! ❤️

    Living with gastroparesis sucks and hurts a lot. I’m in constant pain. I fear to eat anything because I’m scared of the pain it will cause. I’m constantly taking prn after prn. But no matter what there’s always pain

      OMG I could have wrote this also. They did a surgery but never learned to eat again. I'm terrified of foods and down to 2 foods and tea. Now high cholesterol cause the 2 foods are highly processed. I'm so afraid of food due to pain. I'd rather starve than suffer that pain.

    I was badly constipated after the 2nd time I had COVID. One leaf of romaine lettuce constipated me so I think the slowing of stomach happened after covid for me too. It’s been 3 years and I am Silently suffering and trying to find answers. My gastro labeled it as IBS-c after endoscopy.

    I just ran across this episode of you talking about Gastro paresis. You’re doing more of a encouragement Top video which is so helpful. I have had the worst flare from Gastro paresis. Had it for 3 to 4 weeks solid. Finally two weeks ago it started turning around for me. I couldn’t get out of bed. I was still awake. I stayed hydrated all the time. I had three visits to the ER for fluids in 7 to 8 days, because I couldn’t hold my head up off the pillow. But I finally hint of energy bad that I haven’t felt in a long time. A little history, I had back surgery in January surgery in February and upper EGD 1 of March like the day after the EGD is Gastro flared.but thank you so much for your smiling face on this video and your words of encouragement. I need to start following you because you have really afflicted me in about 30 minutes at a time. I really need it. Thank you.

    What does that have to do with Gastroparesis?

    • @lwwgp
      @lwwgp 3 месяца назад

      If you're not _struggling_ with gastroparesis, maybe not much. But for those who are feeling overwhelmed, scared, hopeless, worried, etc., it's really important. Having worked with people with gastroparesis for 15 years, I've seen so many people who are negatively impacted by the things I talk about in this video. Hope that helps!

      I'm sorry that you're struggling with worries about cancer. There are lots of potential causes of gastroparesis but, honestly, cancer isn't one I've heard of. The most common known cause of gastroparesis is diabetes, which is easy to rule out. It can also occur after abdominal surgery or after a viral illness. There are some underlying conditions that can lead to gastroparesis, such as Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, amyloidosis, scleroderma, cystic fibrosis, lupus, thyroid disorders, and connective tissue disorders, but typically you'd have other symptoms associated with them. One of the most commonly diagnosed "types" of gastroparesis is idiopathic and that just means "of unknown cause." That's the kind I've been diagnosed with. There was a long time when I thought I absolutely had to figure out why I had gastroparesis -- and if you do have an underlying condition that can be managed in order to improve gastroparesis then that makes sense. But I underwent dozens of tests at the Mayo Clinic -- I was there for weeks at a time -- and everything was ruled out. I eventually realized that the stress I was creating trying to find an "answer" wasn't supporting my desire to live well with gastroparesis. I was eventually diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos syndrome (not at Mayo Clinic), which is a connective tissue disorder that might be the reason I have gastroparesis or was susceptible to getting gastroparesis, but that hasn't changed anything about how I handle the condition. The good thing is that, for the most part, regardless of the cause of your gastroparesis, the comprehensive management plan that I talk about works to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life. And the mental health stuff that I talk about definitely applies across the board. Hope that info helps a little! Sending you lots of good wishes.

      Glad you're finding the info helpful! I've done a few personal updates though I'm not sure if I've talked specifically about what I eat. I generally follow a gastroparesis-friendly diet like what's outlined in my book, Eating for Gastroparesis. I probably eat a little higher fiber than my recommendations, though I don't track it. I mostly just follow the guidelines in my updated Gastroparesis Diet Guidelines video, particularly doing what feels right to me, knowing that symptoms are feedback and incorporating that information into future choices. I follow a dairy-free diet because my daughter has anaphylactic allergies and a mostly gluten-free diet because that's what seems to work best for me. I also follow a reflux digest, as I have LPR and those are my most bothersome symptoms at this point. I think it really comes down to figuring out what works best for you over time. Hope that helps!
