  • While weight gain due to gastroparesis may seem counter-intuitive, it certainly isn’t uncommon. In this video I discuss why a gastroparesis diet can lead to weight gain and ways to address it within a comprehensive gastroparesis management plan.

I tried the Keto diet and experienced GP for the first time!. I had projectile vomiting and ended up in the ER. My heart goes out to all who experience GP chronically.

My old doctors put me on the paleo diet and my digestion got much worse. Makes sense now that I suspect having gastroparesis. I already knew that diet wouldn't work for me, but they didn't listen.

Thank you for talking about this. I can’t believe there aren’t more videos on RUclips about this.
I’ve no idea if I have gastroparesis but I suspect so, or some sort of extremely slow/paralysed digestion issue. I don’t gain weight but I can’t lose it.
One period in my life I could only eat half a boiled egg a day! But lost no weight. Neither my relatives nor anyone online would believe me so I couldn’t get answers. I was living overseas so didn’t see a Dr.
Every time I’ve gone on Keto, 5 days in my hunger is completely gone & I eat less & less each day. I put it down to ketosis until I realised it was too extreme & something was not right.
After a decade of Keto I looked into it again & discovered this condition. Digestive Enzymes are my saviour. Once I start taking them with meals I no longer feel like food is just sitting there.
When we digest food our whole system is affecting our bodies including our hunger & calorie burning abilities. It makes sense that if it stops so does the rest.

I’m 40 lbs overweight and really struggle to lose. I’ve been doing cardio 6 days a week, and sticking to about 1500-1800 calories a day and the scale isn’t budging. My diet isn’t super low fat. I eat a small amount of cheese, and usually a serving of meat every day. I eat as many fruits and veggies as I can. I manage like 4-5 servings a day. All things considered, my gastroparesis isn’t that bad and I feel like it shouldn’t be this hard. It’s incredibly frustrating.

Hi, Shauna! My viewpoint on all of this has changed quite a bit over the years, so I'll tell you how it looks to me now as I read your post. It sounds like you're trying really, really hard to manipulate something that, despite what diet culture would have us believe, we just don't have total control over. I've been talking lately about an "inside-out" approach to gastroparesis management and there's so much to see around that for weight, as well. I wonder what would happen if you loosened your grip on all of this. If you let all of the thinking about what you should do settle for a bit and made decisions from a more intuitive place. Does your body feel like doing the cardio you're doing 6 days a week? Does it feel like eating the diet plan you've set up for yourself? I'd just start to get really curious. Even in terms of why weight loss looks so important when your GP is fairly well managed and you're engaging in all of these health promoting behaviors already. I'm not saying try to lose weight or don't... I'm just inviting you to see what would happen if you let all of the thinking around it settle down a little bit and see what occurs to you. You may end up doing the very same things, but with less of a tight grip on your desired outcome, my hunch is your experience of it all might be quite different.

If I let things go, I become an absolute mess. I become very sedentary and eat terrible foods. I crave sugar like crazy. And the only thing that saves me from resorting to fast food is that I’m strictly gluten free. I stopped counting calories and exercising consistently during this last year, and I gained 25 lbs. Eating better and exercising does help considerably with my depression and anxiety, so it’s not just about weight loss. It’s just frustrating that I’m not getting the benefit of weight loss too.

@Sofía I'm normally 160 lbs. Finally got a GP diagnosis (most likely related to a possible MS diagnosis)...I'm at 218 lbs and there's nothing I can do to lose the weight. I've been walking 2 miles almost every day (which has been hard with my leg spasticity and weakness) for a few months now. Nothing happens. Just gain a few more pounds. I'm on various strict diets. No alcohol. Water only. Its been a nightmare. Losing weight has never been an issue for me. I'm a Marine veteran that used to be in great shape.
GP can go either way. You either can't keep the weight on or can't keep it off. Unfortunately, for us folks, we got shafted with the fat. 😖

Thanks for all your great videos.
It seems to me that I gain weight due to SIBO that is caused by Gastroparesis, not due to Gastroparesis itself.
I eat super healthy and my calorie intake is low, as I always had. Yet I keep gaining weight, which started only as my GP progressed.

It's like I'm listening to what I go through. I also have gastroparesis, severe food allergies, low energy, tired all the time, but can't seem to lose weight.
I need to increase my excersise.
Trying to find what to eat is hard let along doctors recommends 6 small meals a day. That seems like a Thanksgiving dinner to me when I hear that. If I don't eat then it stores more fat. More bloated, which bloating and fullness is ext painful and makes me feel more heavy.
Anyway just wanted to say thank you on video I'm trying to feel better about myself. Thank u

You sound a lot like me. I have gp, severe food and medication allergies, low energy, overweight can’t seem to lose weight at all. I can’t eat any fruits, peppers, or nuts as well as some veggies because of allergies. Carbs especially breads help me when my stomach is upset or hurting. I also have chronic pancreatitis. I am not a diabetic which is unexplainable with the pancreatitis. No reason for it. I have a lot of issues with constipation. I do take Linzess for it and Dexilant for acid reflux as well as Bentyl and right now we are trying Lyrica for the pain. I really don’t think it is working because it is causing the constipation to become worse. I have only been on it a week. Hopefully it will level off. I am at a loss when it comes to the weight loss. The different medications can cause weight gain, swelling, and several other side effects that are concerning. We have already tried Neurontin as well as several other medications. I’m very tired of not having an answers. I’m not sure what to do. If I should go to a nutritionist or just research it out for myself. This is hard to deal with especially when I am in pain and nauseated all the time with no energy.

I have headaches and im not even able to stomach water. I weighed in after drinking water and even after 90 minutes was the exact same weight. My stomach is really slow. The headache prevents me eating. I get one now and again.
Had a headache today walked for 90 minutes but couldn't stomach dinner. Id eaten 680 calories . I fear my heart will slow down too much. I can't eat or drink. The headaches aren't serious but it seems to slow down my stomach. Water sits there headaches definitely the cause. Ive cut my water intakes as I was drinking 6 liters far too much for weight and activity level. Do I just not eat as much. Im sure ill be fine but I can't even bear a glass of water. Im 103lbs with a lot of walking but need to weigh less due to height and build. Im left physically sick sometimes and cam gain up to 4 pounds in days. Eating has become a misery.

The trouble I have is the simple carbs help me 💩 for some reason. More veggies, even lower fiber cause EXTREME bulking for my body, and whole grains too. (This isn't a lazy excuse to eat simple carbs. I'm actually the kind of person who prefers 100% whole grain. Lots of veggies and fruit, etc.).
Protein sources cause gerd in me as well, even boneless skinless lean meats and fish.
I'm so discouraged by this condition. And I feel so helpless. I was thinking my whole life then boom 85lbs gain in short period of time and I've been obese ever since. I could go on and on, but this is already very long, sorry.
