Great questions! I think it can handle wild mice just fine since I have no mice poop in my feeder like I used to (and I've been selling these since 2019). Rats, on the other hand, CAN get into it. I don't make any claims about rats. Birds are mostly deterred by it, but occasionally they can figure it out, so not 100%, but pretty darn close.

You will probably get even better results if you let them soak for 8-10 hours instead of 24. If I forget to drain mine after 8-10 hours, the germination isn't as good. I am now combining black oil sunflower seeds and other grain (I sprout wheat, corn, barley, and sunflower seeds together), and everything sprouts. I don't know why your sunflower seeds wouldn't be sprouting. Try the shorter soak time, and make sure the seeds are fresh. I'm sure your chickens love your efforts!

I know a lot of people are totally opposed to bleach water--even for chickens. But I've heard that if you use a small enough ratio, it's ok.

Well, in my opinion you MUST put it up high, because the autofill cups get dirty even when it's elevated. I put my waterer on a cinder block, and I've never had a problem with them putting their foot on the cups.

I'm so sorry I didn't reply sooner. No, I don't think they would work on metal. The notches on the feeder ports bend the plastic a bit, then pop into place. Metal would probably be too stiff.

Sounds like you have a great system going! I especially like your 1930s sink with ridges on the surface. That would make the initial draining so much easier!

When the perch is lowered (all the chickens on it), it's actually parallel with the ground, so it's not angled down. It's angled up before they fly up to it. However, I do think using a 2x4 would be a good idea for colder climates than mine so they could cover their toes when they roost at night. I think 2x4s are generally better than 2x2s for that reason. Thanks for your comment!

OK, I checked on backyardchickens.com, and this comment seemed to sum up what everyone else had to say: "No. Give them water. Most chickens hate snow and refuse to go near it, let alone eat it for water. It will take a lot of snow to consume the necessary amount of water, as snow has a lot more volume than water, and even if they are willing to peck at it, they won't get as much water out of it as they need just from the occasional pecks. And, like others have said, it will lower their internal temperature and their bodies will need to work extra hard to overcome that. Overall not a good idea. They should always have liquid water available regardless of the weather." I'm not saying you're wrong, but most backyard chicken owners wouldn't go there.

No. Just like my other feeder, these are mouse-proof. That said, to be completely honest, out of the hundreds of blue barrel feeders that I've sold, I've had two people tell me that mice got in theirs. So I'd say 99% will not have an issue with mice. For the 1% that do, I have created feeder port covers, so you can cover them at night if you want to.

My supplier for the silicone just stopped--so I've been hunting for another. I just placed an order for more sample silicone. I will update on when it should arrive. If you have silicone at home, I'm happy to open it up right now for you to order. Otherwise, my guess is a week? 12/10 or 12/11/23.

Yes, I've had a customer do this before. However, don't use an external heater for the cooler waterer (like the kind that I sell that goes underneath). It will melt the plastic of the cooler. For some reason, it won't melt the plastic of my bucket and barrel waterers though--their plastics' melting point must be higher.

Hey Michigan Girl! I'm from Michigan myself! I appreciate your feedback. If you comparison shop for large no waste feeders (mine holds 90 lbs), I think you'll find that Revolutionary Chicken's blue barrel feeder is actually a very good deal. The shipping is free for the customer, although it costs me quite bit to ship the 24"x16"x16" box. But I hear you. I'm always looking for the best deal myself. If you don't mind drilling a hole, you can put the feeder ports in any plastic container. (I sell the ports individually as well as the hole saw bit.)

You actually can't make a feeder out of a water cooler using my ports. They are designed to lock against the wall of a container, and the wall of a cooler is really wide because of their insulated walls.

I actually did start with the seeds in trays when I started this process years ago, and the sprouting rate was extremely low. The seeds sprout much better when started in jars. Then I move to trays. Granted, it would not be feasible for 40 chickens. I admit I'm geared more towards small backyard flocks.

You can actually get a 5gal bucket and drill holes on the lid to simulate the jar growing

I believe that the fodder grew a little faster the warmer it was, but it still grew for me in the winter, and we keep our house pretty chilly (60s). If you grow it outside, it must be kept in the shade.

Go ahead and break the silicone seal and use the spare nipples that came with it. If you need more, I'm happy to send more. They should not leak.

That's not a bad idea. I think it would be pretty convenient to not have to worry about dumping out the water. But I guess you'd need an expendable bath tub!

YES! I didn't know this when I first made this video, but I ran into the problem of a vacuum being created. So now when I sell my kits (at RevolutionaryChicken.com), I have in my instructions to drill a hole in the lid.

Well unfortunately this type of artificial grass may not be the best for the roll-away nest boxes. It's pretty thick, so the incline needs to be fairly steep for the egg to roll.

Oh wonderful! I'm so glad it's working well for you! As far as suggestions of where to buy seed, I used to get mine at Winco Foods (not organic). Then I tried barley at a local mill. By local, it's 30 minutes away. It's cheaper, but I do prefer the smell of the wheat. You might google to see if there is a grain mill within driving distance. Another idea is joining a local chicken FB group. I have learned so much from mine! You could ask them, because certainly someone near you who is into chickens would know.

Probably. So if you have an issue with rats or squirrels eating your chicken feed, better go with a different style feeder. Perhaps a Grandpa's Feeder?
