  • I test a few unusual types of heaters for chicken waterers that use poultry nipples to see which ones will work in cold temperatures. Will an aquarium heater or a birdbath heater work to heat a chicken waterer? Watch to find out!

Did you know chickens can just eat snow for their water, like all wild birds do...
My grandpa said he did it this way for 50 years every winter, when heated water bowls didn't even exist, and it takes 0$ and zero cost to fill a bowl of snow twice a day, and if the power goes out, who cares, its snow. I've been doing this for 3 winters with mine, I use to have a heated bowl but even that would freeze at the top, and they last 1-2 seasons. A bowl of snow is forever.

Marie Antoinette said, "Let them eat cake!" and you say, "Let them eat snow!" Ha ha. I have never heard of this. I'm going to bring it up in a chicken FB group, and I'm sure they'll bite my head off for even bringing it up.

OK, I checked on backyardchickens.com, and this comment seemed to sum up what everyone else had to say:
"No. Give them water. Most chickens hate snow and refuse to go near it, let alone eat it for water. It will take a lot of snow to consume the necessary amount of water, as snow has a lot more volume than water, and even if they are willing to peck at it, they won't get as much water out of it as they need just from the occasional pecks. And, like others have said, it will lower their internal temperature and their bodies will need to work extra hard to overcome that. Overall not a good idea. They should always have liquid water available regardless of the weather."
I'm not saying you're wrong, but most backyard chicken owners wouldn't go there.

@@revolutionarychicken6251 "Most chickens hate snow and refuse to go near it" I'm in northern Canada and my chickens live in the snow 3/5th of the year, sounds like a Florida person post that doesn't get snow to be honest
