Welcome to the world of flying and building experimental aircraft. Join me as we go through every detail of construction of different kits. We'll fly together, build together and I'll show you the trial and tribulations of aircraft construction. We'll cover the entire line of construction from hardware and techniques to preparing to show the aircraft at North America's largest airshow!!! Come join me and create something.
Aircraft Canopy - Bonding with Sikaflex
An alternative to rivets/screws is to use Sikaflex to bond a canopy to the frame.

Interesting to see people restoring these WW1 engines and aircraft.

Thank you for the great video. I'm in the process of wiring an Avid Magnum. This was very helpful. ✈️
Interesting to watch landings in your RV-4, I just did a first flight in my RV-4. I did 3 point and they were very good, thank god. Once I get comfortable, I’ll do wheel landings. Enjoy the videos and am looking forward to more.
👍
So is there a way you can superimpose the G-meter on the screen as you are doing the 4G's loop. That's so awesome it deserves some telemetry. I heard RV4 over RV8 on the aerobatics.....that's what I'm drawing out of this video plus the amazing flying and instruction!!!! Subscribed!
I have 2 cans of sikaflex for the canopy. One each of primer and cleaner is enough.
how much consummable did you use for your canopy? Like was one tube of 295, 250 ml of primer and 250 ml of activator was enough?
greatest tutorial out there, will do that on my Thorp t-18!
Great explanation. Where do you buy your clickbond fasteners?
How do you address the horizontal stab spar inspection
I drilled a hole about 3/8” and used a borescope
Hi there Stu. Very helpful video for me. I am running a 40amp B&C Alt and just ordered the current limiter and shunt from B&C. When ordering the shunt it says in the description that I might not need it if running an EFIS which I am; Advanced. So I planned on installing like you have shown. Its an RV7 0-360. Thank you if able to offer some additional insight.
I’m back
all thats need now is to install a Sodium ion battery
Excellent video. 3 generations of my family worked at and retired from Textron- Avco- Lycoming Engine.
Somebody got a great airplane!
Any experience with water intrusion into the foam, or corrosion concerns?
One of the few saved videos in my collection of must have videos. Well done Stu!!!
GGreat video, very instructive and well done. However, I have never heard or seen a “current limiter” before. Is it necessary?
all of these fasteners are SS?
Music makes it hard to focus on what you're saying
Bob Nuckolls was a great source. Our EAA chapter brought him in for a good class when we were building back in the '90s.
What a greeat video. Thank you for taking the time and making this great video.
Thank you Stu for all your contributions. Huge.
Thanks for the class!
I miss seeing the detail on video of you educating the world to build their own freedom of flight!
How do you bond the top of the skirt? If the canopy is riveted, the top of the skirt is riveted. With the Sika, it's that top edge I'm not sure about. The lower portion of the skirt I can see gets riveted.
Going over the video for a few more tips and tricks, I will be taking my RV 4 fuselage off the jig this Saturday 06/10 👍
One line diagrams missing
I put a big 30 amp relay in for my little facet fuel pump on the ultralight. I couldn't find a smaller relay, it's kinda big. do I even need a relay, I have a good switch.
For a basic facet pump a simple switch will work and that is what most people use. Relays are for very large items like master and starter.
Too risky flying that close to VNE, zero margin!
The issue comes when its time to descend. To do that I close the alt air bypass, pull power back and push prop in a bit. You can keep it under VNE no problem
Very clear and concise
If I had this beautiful tutorial I would chose Sika... As always thank you for the great info!
Thank you so much for the how to videos. You said you flipped it over to do the topside of the frame. How did you fit the sika tube with the curvature of the canopy? Also, was it 2 weeks of sitting? One for the bottom before moving and then the flip?
Flip it right away and then let it sit for a week. You can get most of the canopy frame with the standard gun. At the very front and back you will have to squeeze some sika in there and then spread it with pop sickle stick or similar. This is where masking tape helps a lot because it’s easy to make a mess
Is that a sneak peek at the new project right at the end there ?
No that’s b-roll from long ago :)
I was thinking about using Sika Flex on the 4 canopy , I believe I will give it a go. Question , do you fill the cleko holes with sika flex .
It never hurts. I definitely fill in gap where spacer was but the hole itself is less critical
Thanks. I was just reading about the process while planning a canopy replacement.
Grazie.
Great video. Very informative. You are obviously a busy guy, but it would be great if you could show how you design and install the plenum.
I’ll do that at some point yes. I have a new project now and I only use plenum
Did you gain any speed?
Intersection fairings not really. Main point it to provide pleasant transition and in case of fibreglass gear leg fairings to hold them in place
Nicely down thanksCan’t wait to go fly my 3B
What Torque setting did you use for engine mount bolts?
Same as normal AN7 bolt. 40 ft/lbs. Then you might have to rotate the bolt if it uses a cotter pin but new engine bolt kits from Vans will be metal lock nuts (much better)
Not sure the site picture and how far to put the stick forward after touching down on a wheel landing - any pointers?
The answer is “whatever it takes”. You are trying to lower the AOA so that the plane doesn’t fly again. No need to push the nose over too far, also keep in mind gyroscopic forces will yaw the plane with pitch changes. All you need is a little pitch change on touchdown to keep the plane stuck to the ground.
Yeah it’s very small and progressively forward as the airplane slows. As far as site picture it takes some practice and too fast may cause a bounce. Start with early morning and evening flights with calm winds. Lock in the site picture during takeoff with tail up. Remember as CofG and wind conditions change it gets harder and humbling :)
Very very nice Stu! Stu.
Very nice video! I watch almost all of your videos now and it really gives me convinced the upcoming build. One question, did you paint the interior after or during the assembling of the fuselage? I wonder how I can do that accurately with all those angles and tight spaces. I mean, how did you get the paint gun in there? Thank you so much for your videos!!!
Yeah it’s tricky. I powder coated a lot of stuff during the assembly. Specifically parts that see lots of wear. Then paint remainder as best you can. It’s not too bad getting paint gun or rattle cans in there :)
@@stusaircraftfactory6592 Stu, thank you very much for your response. So I guess all those RV8’s that are usually light gray inside are all painted? I wasn’t sure if that is paint or just primer. There is not much information out there about painting the interior.
@@flyingchris81 yeah typically primed and painted. I find rattle can paint is sufficient since it will get chipped and scratched no matter what paint it is. Then it’s easy to touch up. High wear parts I prefer powder coat and upholstery
@@stusaircraftfactory6592 you interior looks really nice, the entire airplane is stunning!
I would like to find a -4 so I could sit in it to see if I would be comfortable. I'm 6'1 but long in the torso but the -4 is so much cheaper than an -8.
