This game has an extremely important place in my heart, as the game that'd turn me into an rpg-head. While a lot of pieces of the story aren't great, it contains no shortage of fantastic ones as well. I couldn't bring myself to dislike the dumb bits too much though, by way of rose-tinted glasses and the context that story-oriented games didn't exist nearly as much back then.

    1. The OST was so good and i am a musician so this game stuck with me from that alone 2. You are right it was a slog to playthrough, especially without an emulator/no speed up 3. Despite that I really respect games for taking chances with game design, and some of the cool concepts that came out of it. The way they did job roles specifically in this game were so sick and i would love to see certain aspects of the combat be brought back, unfortunately it took way too long to reach a fun endgame. I have a similar experience with FF13 (my favorite Square game ironically), the combat system was so innovative and fun, but it turned alot of the fanbase off. It also took a long time to reach mid/endgame, but god was the combat soo fun

It doesn't interact directly with the game, I said as much in the video. You need to use a program like retroarch and manually press the buttons to adjust the sun levels yourself. Maybe you could explain where you are confused, I genuinely don't know how I can explain it any more clearly than I do in the video.

As a huge fan of FFIV, I have to say that After Years was…okay. It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t terrible either. It had a decent enough story. And I like how the devs tried to do something a little different than the generally linear storyline of the mainline games. I agree that the chapter system was not well fleshed out, since it made each chapter very linear and virtually eliminated any chance of exploration. The moon phase system was a cool idea that could have been implemented better. The band system, while at least seeming like a cool idea, didn’t really add anything to gameplay. But at least for nostalgia value, this game is worth it. By the way, I had the PSP version aka Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection

1-time use attacks, thrice ruined by shit developer intel pacing. yah, that’s not good. how much developers spend on play-testing , and finding good play-testers, should always be a priority before publishing. because if the sony developers program charge developers 10s of thousands $ to release a patch, that could’ve just been spent on solid play-testers prior.

Currently playing through the game, not sure if I want to finish. The game was... alright though some of the tales were a hit or miss. The game didn't get interesting until the last few tales of the game. The final dungeon was attrocious for me, aggregiously long with encounter rates out the wazoo, the throwback bosses were alright. Some things in this game I enjoyed, most of it felt lazy though.

FFIV on Chronicles didn’t have long load times, the original 97 port did. The only lengthy part was to save the game took like 10 seconds, and probably why they add a “memo save” as a workaround?

I could never get into the 3D remake's art style. I know it was initially developed for the Nintendo DS and they wanted to make the low-poly models look as much like the original sprites as possible within the limitations of a handheld less powerful than the original Playstation, but it is just too weird to hear the game's touching story of redemption and betrayal with its melodramatic pseudo-Shakespearean dialogue spoken through what basically look like scantily-dressed Precious Moments figurines.

yeah. the story was soooo. blech. The writers obviosly favored the villains more than the heroes. The villains were more interesting and competent. The heroes felt weak and oh so stupid. And I couldnt even make plot decisions to make them act smarter. I just felt like I was stuck with stupid, weak characters who were destined to fumble their way to the end of the story no matter what. I guess the wanted to make it feel like you were facing a challenge.... but it felt like... AFTER you beat a tough challenge at the toughest difficulty the game would say to you..."Boy, we totally screwed that up, huh? We suck!"... The motivation to go above and beyond drained away when no matter what feats you do, your forces just barely squeak by in the story. If you like powerless fantasy, this game is for you though. your perfect battle will go unnoticed throughout the game as your army runs for their lives again and again. As your leader loses in the story over a over.

The combat against Monsters IS NOT interesting. It's BULLSHIT. They have too many HP to start with; they constantly change where their "weak" points are so you're all but guaranteed NOT to be able to reach them with whatever asshole has the weapon you need to actually HIT it... and even if you do, it does about as much damage as an attack against a regular unit... meanwhile their total HP even at the start of the game is about as much as 3 normal units. The manticore on Chapter 5 (and whoever thought that was a good idea AFTER making me fight like 5 hellhounds) can absolutely kiss my ass at 130 HP. Fucking retarded. >.< You'd love to see other devs try their hand at it; I'd literally SHOOT any dev that was that level of stupid. : / I was already pissed off enough at Dragon's Dogma 2... I really don't need devs to be any more assholish.

  • @AndrewTheEternal

I found FFIV significantly harder on Steam than this game, oddly enough. I think part of the problem was that the enemies hit so hard that focusing down one enemy so they can't all gang up on one of yours is just so much better than doing crowd control. I only used black magic when the game made me in the Mini sections, and I ended the game (minus the Iron Giant) with no party wipes and only one retreat. Final Fantasy IV, on the other hand, managed to gank me within the first half hour when Kain and Cecil got swarmed and petrified by a group of four Cockatrice. The boss gimmicks in FFIII were also so inconsequential that I could just treat them as random encounters with a little more hit points. I agree with your other criticisms of this game, however. Even as my first Final Fantasy game, I felt like it was a lacking experience.

I know you're already working on this but I had a thought about how the FF 6 characters are grouped in terms of gameplay Magic Characters: Terra, Celes, Strago and Relm, characters who have high magic skill and some support ability to aid in magic, Terra and Celes learn magic naturally and Terra has Trance while Celes has Runic (not so useful but gives her a way to replenish MP), Strago has Blue Magic/Lore and Relm has... sketch... I guess Skill Characters: Edgar, Locke, Sabin, Shadow and Cyan, characters who have a special ability that can outright replace their main attack or provides a support skill, Tool, Steal/Mug, Blitz, Bushido and Throw respectively, also usually the highest strength character and Gimmick Characters: Mog, Gau, Setzer, Umaro and Gogo, characters who play either play completely differently from everyone else or whose special abilities require special setups or different ways of functioning: Mog's dances only work reliably in their native terrain and take control away, Gau's rages are a pain in the ass.... I mean require a lot of planning and a specific way to acquire them, Setzer's slots are a literal gamble and his best weapon setup is as well (loaded dice+dice+master scroll+Genji Gloves), Umaro is a completely uncontrollable berserker and Gogo is fully customizeable but can't use espers to improve stats or learn magic feel free to use this how you will but I came up with this when a friend wanted advice on how to use characters when they picked up the game for the first time

Ngl ATLUS and Falcom single-handedly carried the 7th generation of JRPGs. ATLUS put out Persona 3 and 4, Raidou Kuzunoha vs King Abaddon, Strange Journey, and Shin Megami Tensei IV, which is easily one of the greatest JRPGs ever made, and Falcom put out the Ys and Trails games. I do realize that the first 3 are very late PS2 games, but both P3 and P4 got expanded versions on the PSP and Vita, and went on to be some of the best games on the systems, with P4G being widely regarded as THE best game on the Vita, with Trails of Cold Steel I+II following behind.

They didnt really 'carry'anything since they were still considered prettt niche at the time, and most of those were PS2 or ha dheld titles which still kind of supports my point. Of those I have played though, they are all pretty great! I really want to get into the Trails games... but i tried Trails in the Sky, spent like 4 hours watching story with no real gameplay and burnt out. I like to play my games, not read them xD. Hoping i can find the patience to try them again, as i do enjoy a lot of text heavy games when im in the right mood. Does Trails in the Sky gain better pacing or is it all text all the time? I genuinely want to enjoy them because i hear nothing but praise.

@@StilesReviews I've yet to get into Trails myself lmao. But all my friends talk about how great they were. I played a bit of Cold Steel a few years ago and really liked it, but last my Vita copy. And I personally would consider it carrying because I'm a JRPG fan and if I want to play a JRPG, I would seek them out, you know? A lot of them jumped to handhelds because of the portability, like Dragon Quest IX, along with all the DS remakes. In terms of big budget console JRPGs though, I can definitely see the drought for turn-based games.

Strange Journey is the only thing you listed that is from the 7th gen. The PS2 is 6th gen and SMT4 was 3DS which was 8th gen.

@@Chelaxim Handhelds are different. Also, generations overlap. The 3DS and Vita came out in the middle of the 7th gen, so they aren't 8th generation. They are a side generation to the consoles. SMT IV came out in 2013, which was during the JRPG drought, thus making it apart of it. Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden were both in the middle of the 7th gen, so I don't know what you mean there.

I know this is 4 years past, but still have my Wii version on my Wii and have played the PSP version last year. I do not think there was a way to make the story better after it moved from mobile (episodic). FF4 DS was the right diffuculty, maybe not for newer players but for someone that played FF2-US when it came out. Did like the PSP for the extra bosses. Do not think I will ever play it again though.

I played the pixel remaster of this version and it was the first FF game ive ever played the first playthrough I really enjoyed the job system as well as the story because it was dumb fun then i played the other PRs and the difference in story was stark. for example in FF6 each character that isnt called setzer is enjoyable to watch as they all grow, change or we see the reasons why they act the way they do, throughout the game. but in the FF5 story it all slow in places, childish as well as downright repetitive. The PR for ff5 litreally has a cutscene removal mod. You cant make this hate up 😭😭 The only good things to come out of FF5 was its job system and Gilgamesh I guess

KH2 is one of the games that got me into gaming in my early teens and while I have a lot of nostalgia for it and love the super bosses... I agree so much with this review, it's not the best game ever made. I've seen people call this game "the peak of action RPG" and after my latest playthrough I don't know what are they talk about. Ys games tend to have far better flow of combat and story over this game and same with a lot of Tales games. Yes a lot of Tales games tend to feel a little mindless here and there gameplay wise but they have a lot of systems to dig into if you choose to delve deep, especially on higher difficulties where bosses have more special attacks (you're even rewarded for titles for beating those higher difficulties in some games) not to mention they give more exp for how fast you beat battles (of course there's a cap to this). That's not to say that KH2 doesn't use it's RPG mechanics but it feels so light that it might as well not be there, nor you have a lot of incentive to combat outside of exp and material. I did two level 1 playthroughs in the game and while I liked the challenge, it made me realize just how much more cheap the game's difficulty is. you die in two hits and it's cool they let you live with a single health but it's not enough when you realize how many of those abilities you gain regularly through leveling are mandatory to survive fair and square (I'm aware it's dumb to complain about this since it's a challenge run but it does illustrate how unbalanced the game really is on higher difficulties). Of course that's not to say the combat is bad, a large appeal of this game to many people that it's more focused on being a character action game like DMC rather than have huge focus on the RPG mechanics (which is also debatable if you consider grinding for forms as a must for this game). Even then I would say that DMC is more focused on it's combat because it wants you to go back and find new ways of achieving higher style ranks. Level design in KH2 is trying to mimic those character action game's level design too, empty hallways that are designed for fights, and I pretty much I agree with that it's a huge downgrade from KH1's clever exploratory level design. To get back to what I said earlier, I think people who say that this game is the peak of action RPG barely played action RPG, there's a lot of great stuff that range from simple but fun and complex but awesome stuff.

I haven't played this game in a billion years. But I really should, so that I can really understand it on a deep level and within the wider context of the series. It might even make me loathe the story less, because despite being a slice-of-life lover, I could only see the movie version as a really bad example of the genre's core appeal.

I don't know if I made it clear enough in the video, but I still don't think the story, overall, is good, I just think they were successful with the emotional beats, especially with the context of gameplay. Emotional beats TEND to be the thing Square Writers in general are good at, so that's not surprising. It's more the logistics, lore and continuity that I feel they struggle with.
