  • Hey, did you know that there was a sequel to Chrono Trigger before Chrono Cross? Radical Dreamers is this little known game, and in this video I spend about twenty minutes discussing it's strange origin and how it connects (or more accurately how it doesn't connect) to its brethren.

Man, I have so many memories tied to this game. Me and a good friend sat down and played through it when we first started getting into Japan only games. Also, I'm in the same boat as you. I just can't get into visual novel style games.

Well I hope I did the game justice then! This was my first time experiencing it.. though I still love me some fan translations!

Watching this video of yours nearly two years later. I will be checking out your final fantasy reviews as well as other RPGs that interest me. I appreciate your writing style and tone of voice.
I plan on binging a ton of square enix RPGs this year. I dove into Trigger a few months back and fell in love with it. I got into the 3ds collecting craze and own several more RPGs now thanks to FOMO. I've also got RPGs in my backlog, but I finally feel ready to upgrade from a Mana/DQ apologist to a fully fledged Square Enix fanboy.
I'm playing thru Radical Dreamers as I type this. Got one game over by the Gob Squad, and am now somewhat following a guide simply to ease the pace. I'm appreciating the dialogue in this game so much. The music, and sometimes lack of, has done a ton to improve the experience. Looking forward to the rest of the game.
If you happen by this comment, howdy! I hope you have a wonderful start to your summer, and here's to the rest of your content!

Thank you very much for the kind words, hit me at a good time haha. Since you are new here i will warn you my uploads are slow, but those that have had patience with me usually enjoy what i put out. Some of my early vids are pretty rough, (FFI and FFII for example) but the newer stuff i hope wont disappoint. Enjoy your Square-Enixing, you have a lot to catch up on.

Visual Novels are definitely not for those who dislike slow paced games, unless you somehow find the story or characters interesting. Most of the time, I play Visual Novels that are pretty much dating sims but with a lot of visual novels on steam having terrible translations like you said, that would definitely keep people from enjoying the genre. If you don't mind something that's a bit like a Visual Novel but feels more like a time management/clicker game with rpg elements thrown in, I'd say try the Princess Maker series, particularly 2 because PM 2 has a rpg section to it that I think you may enjoy. But Princess Maker 3 and 5 are worth playing as well and thankfully, all three are available on steam along with the first Princess Maker game. And it so happens that Princess Maker 3 had some sort of HD remaster or something and it was also released on the Switch. And if you really want to try a princess maker game that's more akin to a Visual Novel, then you can try Princess Maker 4 but it was never released in English so you'll have to find a fan tranaslation patch for it.
Other VIsual Novels that I've enjoyed are:
-Seduce Me the Otome (I know it seems like a sexual thing but the story is good, even better if you play this then play it's sequel Seduce Me: Demon War)
-Lucid 9 - this is more of a mystery story or something where you have to solve a lot of puzzles. I've never really finished but it is a good game.
-Everlasting Summer - a Russian VIsual Novel that has an English translation. It appears to be lighthearted at first but it has a lot of darker things going on.
-Doki Doki Literature Club - The same with Everlasting Summer, it's lighthearted at first but it gets steadily darker.

Ok. So I only watched the first half of the video, and skipped over to the end (This is because I heard the Chrono Trigger spoiler warning and am yet to finish that game), but I think this is great 👍. I had no idea this game existed, and I think you do a great job of using visual cues other than ones in the game when you are explaining things. Eg, when you show the Chrono Cross Spundtrack/a picture of the composer. This kind of stuff really helps hold my attention in longer videos. I’m not suggesting you make FAR more frequent in your videos, but it really helps break things up well. As an extra ‘How do I think you could make this better still’ piece of criticism, I think perhaps names of people on the screen can help when their avatar appears, and perhaps titles. For example if you were to namedrop idk Ocarina of Time in a video and showed the box art a ‘N64 1998’ piece of text below it would really help the viewer place the game in time. This would be particularly useful for games where you discuss releases/timelines etc which I know is part of your thing 👌. Anyway, thanks for the mention, I’m glad I can help. I look forward to the next video :-)

I am not a fan of visual novels myself. I could be spoiled by games such as Mass Effect and Dragon Age, because, I had the expectation that visual novels are much more choice driven than what they actually are. They are more close to a novel, but even then they lack the detail of a novel (because of reliance on the visual element I wager). Visual novels are also filled with fan service, to which I am not a fan of. To give an example, I am a huge fan of an anime called Fate/Zero, which is based off a novel. Though, it served as a prequel to a visual novel called Fate/Stay Night. The quality between the anime adaptations is clear. In the anime based off the visual novel, you have a protagonist that lacks any real depth or interesting motivation. An anime more constrained by cliches and tropes, albeit with an interesting premise. The anime based off the novels takes more care to show each character’s motivation and their background. It also helps that the entire cast is not part of a high school. Fate/Zero also has more care to a thematic cohesion because it is not torn between three ridiculous paths.
That said, you could try the visual novel Fate/Stay Night 😅
I also never knew much about Radical Dreamers despite knowing it existed. I found the video to be very informative. I don’t have much inclination to play it myself, but I am happy there are ways to play it and see it in videos such as yours. 😮 Can’t wait for the FFV video and Chrono Cross video.

i have one thing to say: radical dreamers takes place in one dungeon of sorts. viper manor. Chrono cross has, well, the entire world. and many, many, dungeons. i think its a tad unfair to criticize Chrono cross for a "bland" manor.

I like to call this game : Cross Trigger
Edit : Serge in Chrono Cross is Serge the musician grandchild. He's the one reading the story.

    • @StilesReviews
      @StilesReviews  4 года назад

That's a fun theory, unfortunately it's not the case though. There would have to be at least half a dozen 'grand children' that just so happen to have the exact same name and age as their grandparents... not to mention Chrono Cross itself points out that Radical Dreamers takes place in an alternate universe.

    • @heritagekebek3029
      @heritagekebek3029 4 года назад

      @@StilesReviews
Radical Dreamers is an excerpt from Serge's diary, being read by his grandson to the player. While Chrono Cross shows Serge in similar events, this universe's Serge has a different personality, backstory, and set of abilities.
      chrono.fandom.com/wiki/Serge%27s_Grandchild
      "And then I die..."
Despite this paradox, should Serge complete the story successfully, Serge's Grandchild is called away from the diary by his mother, who indicates a friend, much like Kid, has arrived and wants to explore some ruins. Interestingly, the opening scene of Chrono Cross takes place in with Serge, Kid, and another exploring some ruins.
I'm only reffering to the wiki fandom.

As Home World and Another World in Chrono Cross. 2 different universe.
      Maybe Serge grandfather book was
in Another World then he came into
      Home World?
And when they point that out? In Chronopolis? When the computer
tell the story? (I will watch again)
      ruclips.net/video/78osn7h6nus/видео.html
Yeah : Karsh spot that other time exist and Steena spot that other worlds from the 2 they already know exist. But the story don't tell in which universe the book was.
A shadow of a scientific say : "Same individual or life-form may exist on different universe." maybe object too?
Also; not many generation if it was the case of only one universe. And even 2. Wazuki is Serge (Chrono Cross) father. So Serge the musician had Wazuki, then he got Serge then he turn into Lynx... Arggg! Timemension
is so mindfudging ^^ So wait... Did that mean that Serge the musician kill Wazuki in human form? (in this dimension).

Ha! I see what you did there...
On a serious note, I've never actually been able to get through this game. Though, like you I find VNs incredibly boring...and unlike you, RD was no exception. It was nice to be able to get the run down and to see some of the game's content. I have to say make it look way more exciting to play then it is. I find myself wanting to try it again despite being utterly let down the first time.

Love this game, that's about it, anyway.
The fact you did this makes me wonder if you'll ever do a video on the absolute attack on the senses that is Chrono Cross, even as someone that's never played Chrono Trigger, that game is an actual mess and I both hate and love every second I spent on it, it is one of the worst rpgs I've played and I wouldn't trade it for the world, it has the most batshit insane story ever and it's hilarious, it has so many redundant characters it might as well be called a pokémon game, because for every Kid or Glenn you have five Poshuls that just join you because why not.
It's a train wreck I can't look away from, it's basically the YIIK: a postmodern RPG of it's time, it's terrible and I want to kiss every single dev for letting it happen

Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Both this and My Chrono Trigger video were made specifically as a build up to a Chrono Cross video that has been years in the making. Its been pushed back for multiple reasons, the current one being the impending release of the remaster in three days.
