  • Happy Halloween, all! I can't believe it's been a year already. This time I decided to take a look at a game that's been in my backlog for years, the Survival Horror RPG for the NES: Sweet Home. This was Capcom's First RPG and it is often considered the true birth of the Survival Horror genre, but what is truly impressive is that it still holds up today. Watch the video to find out why!
Apologies for the poor audio quality in this one, had some technical difficulties and have since been fixed.

Hey! great to see you working again Stiles!
I know that this video came over a month ago, but that was because you hadn't put a new video up for over a year.
What's also great was that I was finally able to play Mouryou Senki Madara 1 and 2 for the FC and SFC. and I apsolutly love them. expectilly the second game since that game didn't even got a fan translation, but I was very determined to play it, and I was able to found walktrough videos in jappanese, a guide on Game FAQs that was in english. and during my second playthrough I used a google Translation app to unserstand the diologe and it did not disapoint me. making it the first JRPG that I've completed in japenese.
And even though the game dose not look amazing, or over the top as FF6. I really like the exploration, diologe, the experiance, and the music is litterly everything I wanted out of an RPG.
Now I'm re playing Madara 2 for the 3rd time in just under 4 months and it my just be my favorite JRPG I have ever played.
Hopefully you get to do more vidoes since I really wanted to hear your thoughts on the other FF games.

It's a real treat to find a reviewer with such a small audience yet such good production value.
You're pretty good! I'm shocked that you haven't cracked the 1k ceiling

Yet another brilliant in-depth review. The fact that you chose this game to review is evidence of your passion for the artform. So many (probably more than 90 percent of) RUclips video game critics chase clicks and views with "controversial" and/or popular opinions on the latest games and news, but content like yours is what actually makes RUclips a valueable webzone. Videos like this won't reach millions of views, but us fans appreciate you all the more for it. Good luck on your next video! And thank you, as always.

I wont lie, id love more views haha, and credit where it is do a lot of people have covered Sweet Home, even some bigger youtubers. Its a fantastic game that despite being a cult favorite should be known as a full on classic imo

Awesome review, just glad you got out a single video this year! For a NES game it's got quite a lot, it's always great when a jrpg tries to do something different so the basic combat isn't like every other jrpg.

I actually came to your channel because I was just thinking I haven't seen you around lately. And here is a video I missed. Turns out the bell wasn't on. I love Sweet Home as a Resident Evil fan. I always have an urge to play anything and everything in a franchise (even the games that led up to them). It really allows for understanding of how mechanics in Resident Evil came about. I always liked what is called the zapping feature in Sweet Home. It only shows up again in Resident Evil 0, but it was planned for the first and second game (but never implemented). And Resident Evil 0 only had two characters. Anyways, great video! It was concise and informative!
And yes the pandemic sucks. It has put my entire life on hold and I hate it. I would be in Japan now if not for the pandemic, but alas...I am glad to see you are doing well though. I can't wait to see what you do next! :)

Permadeath usually stresses me out, but in Sweet Home it actually didnt bother me. Just one person's opinion of course, but i would say give it a try anyway haha. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

@@StilesReviews last time I played I used the two nights that always spawn in one room to grind to max level before moving on. I felt that there's enough traps and instant death moments that having an overleveled party doesn't make the game too easy it just makes the combat less frustrating

I'm wondering , what is the shader used to get that super nice crt look?

Thanks! I am glad you like my stuff! I am using crtlottes.slang in retroarch. I dont recall if i modified it or not, i may have to give it a simpler look so it would show up better in my videos.

I mean we also have Dragon Quest 3 and 4, which go head to head to SNES RPGs. Hell one of the best RPGs on the Super Nintendo is Dragon Quest 3 remake, if we are including Japanese released games.
