Challengers (2024): a beautiful FAILURE? | in-depth film video essay/review
Challengers (2024) has gotten a lot of hype because of Zendaya - now it's out in cinemas I have a lot of thoughts - for one, Challengers is not a steamy romance you probably think it is, and also it's not actually about tennis....not really. CIVIL WAR 2024: The Scariest Movie You'll See This Year | in-depth film review

Civil War (2024) is the newest film from auteur production studio A24, and it has been cause of a lot of debate due to it's apolitical approach to the film's storyline. I think the lack of politics is what makes Civil War good...terrifyingly good, with an underlying tone of what I call "philosophical horror" /chapters. 1. premise and initial thoughts 2. hidden artistry 3. the flaws of the film ...

Great voice
You are absolutely hilarious. Really happy to see another one of your videos....the amount of effort you put into these is greatly appreciated! Now regarding the film: as a tennis player and a tennis fan for nearly 2 decades, judging from the trailer and your video, this film makes me feel embarrassed to say I play tennis. This is far from what the tennis world is really like and it's going to rub people the wrong way. Also, the fact that she is not even holding a correct service grip in the poster pictures of her in the film makes my skin crawl.....
I *CHALLENGE* YOU TO WATCH THIS NEW VIDEO DROP 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💥 👉 Challengers (2024): a beautiful FAILURE? | IN-DEPTH VIDEO ESSAY/REVIEW Where I share my thoughts about the new movie, including thinking that this movie is not really about a romance, and not really about tennis... So what is it about, then? WATCH NOW! Tell me what you think about the movie/video in the comment section (I do read them!!! I love hearing what everyone thinks)
Awesome video, though I think the title is a bit clickbaity. I semi-disagree that the film wasn't a 'steamy romance', but it's hard to put into words. Nearly every scene was positively dripping with erotic tensions and subtext, but the film was remarkably reserved about when and how it acted on and released those tensions. It allows for a much more complex bouquet of emotions, even contradictory ones, all wrapped up together instead of simply acting out on lust and desire.
That's a interesting way of thinking about it. I do feel like the romance can be seen as just another avenue of competition and dominance, just like the tennis is a metaphor for. Thanks so much, and yeah, a bit clickbaity, but also the best way I could describe my thoughts within a succinct title 😂
Very well done! Thank you, Zurich! I hope you get to feeling better soon. Have a good weekend.
Thank you!! Feeling better already! 😆
Thanks for watching! What's your thoughts about Challengers? Did ya like it??
So then it does exist
I mean, it's debatable, psychologically yes, technologically no
Thank you for making this review and creating more conversation!. I saw it a few months back at the Victoria Film Festival and was absolutely blown away. I went to see 10 other films at that festival, and none of them even came close to the emotional depth that silence brings in this film. I have been telling everyone I know about it ever since. I think it's harder to find films like this randomly now because algorithms would tune this one out based on other preferences of the viewer. I think everyone should watch this and contemplate on what moves them about it.
You are spot on, and this unintentional-ness that u mention, I believe is in fact INTENTIONAL. This is raw and real about where a lot of people are at rn in society, especially (Gen Z and some Millennials vs previous generations and the world in their era's) not as a means to influence or sway or idealize, but to simply reflect it back. The beautiful surrealism and artistsry set a tone for the idealized experience of the protagonist. I could go A LOT more in depth with labels and references, but it's arbitrary to my point. The thing is our views and opinions of what's around us and how we digest and interpret those things are shaped by a litany of things most of us are unconscious of, but you are thinking and are digging and balancing those complex somewhat contradictory and unsettling yet oddly addicting feelings and processing and reflecting and rejecting and second guessing and accepting and vacillating (as we do and must for our own growth, and from a rudimentary standpoint because it's automatic due our design and wiring as human beings, what people take away from films like this is verrrry instructive on understanding who someone is and where they are at in their level of consciousness and awareness, so in that alone it's brilliant as a mechanism to unveil those things in a person, and quite fascinating to see the myriad of responses to this film other really compelling and profound works others have put out recently, art reflects life :) against many other echos and Russian nesting dolls of concepts and culture and rightness or wrongness and intent and homage and reality as we'd like it to be vs reality as is vs our singular reality and experience vs others singular reality and experience's vs the collective collision within its parts and the collective as humanity as a whole. Very intelligent and insightful and well done review tho lovely, I enjoyed your video and hearing your perspective :)
Such a insightful comment, thank you!
Gostei muito do comentário sobre o filme, tive impressões muito semelhantes às suas
It sucked and it wasn't scary at all. It was a really awful movie
Watched it last night. It did not suck
Its not an accurate interpretation of what would happen. Just a hug fest for journalist. Whats missing is the blatant racism, classism, and straight slavery that would happen in this country the minute our supply line is broken.
What was the gender of the two fetus's brains? This is never explored.
Your channel is wonderful. Another great video essay.
Thank you!!

personally, i think the film could've dealt with what a civil war in america could mean for the people apart from guns and violence. i get that the focus was on journalism but it kinda feels like a missed opportunity to provide some sort of commentary on america's current polarised politics and opinion leaders. it's like if the crucible by arthur miller came out in the mccarthyism era and didn't talk about hysteria but focused on burying the bodies. enjoyed the movie tho. also get letterboxd if you haven't already!!!!
I feel that showcasing the specific American political tensions that are in the culture currently might've easily skewed the movie into being biased to the point of shallow propaganda. Also, I think it would have dated the film a lot in future, where I think Civil War as it is now has more staying power. I think it's more likely to be a film you could watch in 10, 20+ years time and it not need the context of the current culture in extensive detail, rather than be a film with it's main value being "a movie about the early decades of 21th century American politics". But I agree that if there was an even balance of the hysteria of the different sides being presented (my preference would be of the ordinary citizens), I definitely could get behind that, and maybe it would have elevated the movie even more. I've been debating about letterboxd, and ya convinced me 😆
Not to be pedantic but the spanish loyalists were not dissenting they were fighting against a fascist takeover so technically I guess it was the fascists that was the dissenters.:P
This is the kind of pedantry I can get behind 😂 and I suppose, you could interpret that that the Western Forces would view the president as the dissenting fascist government in the same way as you said lol
@@UpintheAirft.Zurich Yes of course its to a large degree relative. And they would indeed consider the fascist Government illegimate. I guess it all would rest on the degree the loyalist faction is a direct continuation of the US union the secessionists would maybe have the most rightful claim to being dissenters as well as the moral high ground.:) PS:I cannot remember 5.56 being that loud even in shoothouses:P
@@UpintheAirft.Zurich Also,The goverment militia with Hawaiian shirts I think their a coded version of the proudboys or something of this nature.
10:33 "both sides call him a coward for staying non political" 11:23 "could be set anywhere because of the growing sense of fascism" Only one side calls the other fascist in the US. Garland might have tried to stay non-political, but ultimately the movie is framed from his political stance. It is not super relevant to the overall plot, but lets not tray to say the apples are oranges. The film could have gone harder on the responsability of journalists, how sensationalism on both sides is to be the most likely cause to split the people up, people who form their oppinions mostly based by 1 news souce, be it CNN or FOX, which are very partisan. It portrays war time journalists as adrenaline junkies that need to insert themselves into the story, because it needs to be them who report on a story. Basically, all the journalism happening in the movie goes against the president, you want me to believe it was unanimous that the president was wrong? How did he still have supporters if there was nobody telling the stories of the other side? Mind you, these are criticisms to the movie. Your video is very well produced.
yeah, both the creator here and Garland in general seem to think that "extremism is bad" is a deeper take than it actually is. Democrats didn't storm the capitol when they last lost an election, so it's foolish to think that both sides are equally culpable in creating instability. It's why I don't get the people who went "you just don't like it because it didn't say your side was the good guys" crowd. Like, yeah it doesn't take ANY side, but that's not the compliment that you think it is, because it's not reflective of the reality of a civil war.
On one hand, I think you're right that the movie doesn't go hard on journalists - they seem to be presented as impartial agents with a dedication to the truth. But I've been thinking about it again and, like you said, these journalists are also presented as people seeking out a story with their own implicit agenda (that is, being against the president, though they are against the WF as well, but less so I think), and dispassionately viewing the image of a dying man as a "great picture". Whether this was Garland's explicit intention or not, the journalists read to the audience as amoral agents - and (I've been reading Sontag's book On Photography) one may even see them as complicit in what they are photographing. Not in the heinous action, but in their chosen impassivity. As Sontag explains it: "Photography [...] is a way of at least tacitly [...] encouraging whatever is going on to keep on happening. (A side note: My thoughts instantly go to Jessie and Joel) To take a picture is to have an interest in things as they are, in the status quo remaining unchanged (at least for as long as it takes to get a "good" picture), to be in complicity with whatever makes a subject interesting, worth photographing - including when that is the interest, another person's pain and misfortune." Everyone is this movie - the WF, the President, and the journalists - are morally gray and implicitly political, and each group is seen as causing/acting callous, as well as being the victim of terrible callousness. In that way I would argue that the movie goes beyond the political, and adds a philosophical bent I think people are missing. It shows Garland's concern about the duty journalism has in such a conflict, and whether journalism as an institution is really up to the task of reporting impartially. (I didn't say all this in the vid, cos it was hard to find a place to fit it lol). Btw, your comment was really nice to read, I love hearing people's thoughts! And thank you 💛
This is really well made! I totally agree that it isn't political at all. However I honestly think it's extremely critical of journalists, not praising them. Throughout we see the characters smiling and even giggling at what they are photographing. Even though they clearly understand the danger of it, the movie at times seems to suggest they are only photographing what they find interesting, not what is important. For instance the scene where they do a photoshoot in the shop with the dress, or when Jesse first photographs Lee. They are doing it all out of self interest more than any cause. Just as they want to get an interview from the president before anyone else, Jesse is more concerned with getting the photo of Lee's death than helping her human to human. It was even filmed as though her photographs were the shots being fired at her.
I totally see that interpretation as well, those moments do give the suggestion that the journalism is inherently self interested, or that the only news worth reporting on is the most sensational and violent (not the ordinary people who are struggling in the displacement camps). Good point, and thank you!!
Thanks for watching😊! Did anyone else find Civil War (2024) terrifying?
Are you a toddler? Who the the hell finds the scary
She literally has to fight and escape a frame of reference entirely build by elites that continuously try to rob, exploit and misinform her at almost any step until she event gets the chance to inform herself. She literally beheads her ex husband in the end to do the transplant in order to live in freedom. The fact that you missed all this and do not know that Lanthimos favourite movie is "Red and White" by Jancso clearly should tell you that you probably missed half the message.
Its nice to see that critics are discovering Brechtian alienation after 100 years: *good jobs critics* (pinches cheek)
For me the movie had a heart and film’s Bella’s quest for equality was not merely selfish, it was interesting ti hear your thoughts though, since I have not read the book
The Empty Dullness of this review.
A beautiful film, a aural and visual poem and "not for everyone" particularly if you do not understand the power of Komorebi as a transforming meditation device which pop up between scenes in the movie , as a leit motif in glorious black and white .... in my experience this is the major theme of this filmed poem , just as early 60s Lightshows that were performed with the music he plays on his old cassette player were psychedelic in the original sense of the term, an epiphany, a realisation that everything is one thing, today is today, etc ... i loved this modern take on the 60s dream .... and that final scene of his face going through all the emotions of humanity deserves an Oscar by itself .... so thankyou for mentioning Komorebi in this review ... it is important
So many stories to tell and in so many ways. This one aint my style.
This is excellent commentary!
I don't agree with this reading of the film. Nature is not really what is on display or on trial but the cruelty inherent to the structure of society and how that is interacted with specifically from a feminine perspective. "We are all cruel beasts" is such a strong line that I can understand how her refutation can ring hollow. Her actions however lead me to think of a different line. Later we found out Victoria loved cruelty but she was still enacted upon and oppressed by her husband despite her acquiescence to the structure and rewards of society. She was still to be victim. Bella in not allowing herself to be victimized to have come out of "the dark period" and to self actualize asks a question. "Can anyone improve?" The film at least in my read, is about the road to betterment and knowledge and how while there is horror along that path and how cruelty may be a part of society, we can be better. I think the marketing for the film muddied the actual thing the text is saying.
"friendship" - - - - - - - - - - - - - - right...
every other post on my instagram feed is an ad for some "clothing brand," dozens of extremely similar brands that somehow have thousands of followers despite all their product being resold from Shein and AliExpress 🤦♂️. god forbid i left ONE comment telling one of these clothing drop-shippers to get a real job cuz now my entire feed is infested with them 🤦♂️ i also hate the fact that any account i make will be suggested to people i know IRL so i havent even bothered with making an art account like i wanted to 💔
I post my art on instagram but yesterday, something weird happened because while I was scrolling onto Instagram I noticed the “follow” button isn’t working and despite updating the app on my phone, the “follow” button still not working. And also despite earning followers I couldn’t follow back because of the follow button not working. I don’t want to uninstall Instagram because I post most of my art there. But you’re right instagram is a mess, but that app needs a fix 100%
Brilliant review. You did a great job. Keep it up!

mine is baby kitties. the only thing I like abt insta
Also the way I’ve noticed the algorithm working at least 3 years ago, I’m just now finally posting again but 3 years ago the way it worked was they compared your new post to the one before it. So if your new post got more engagement then the one before it then they would push it more then the one before it. It was as simple as that. And I would climb my views up everytime by making crazier and crazier stunt videos and always one upping myself. Although that wasn’t great for my mental health always trying to one up myself, which is why I took a 3 year break.
I love instagram, it’s much easier to grow now. Plus it’s the only place I’ve been able to get a 100k I’ve never grown that big anywhere and I’ve tried every social media app. Instagram is fun but that comment thing sounds annoying though
This is such a well made video. like oh my gosh informed rants are something i never knew i needed. thank you for this great video, i hope the algorithm has some mercy on your channel because your content is AMAZING and underrated 🥰
Ahh, thank you😆❤❤ Video essay is the my preferred outlet for rage 😂
yeah instagram is horrible. i personally got banned for 6 months ( tried to log back in and it says i have to make a new account) because i said that genocide isnt good and that it should be punished. its just engagement farming and rage baiting on instagram these days. tried to contact them but no response. its broken to the core (btw your voice sounds a bit soft so a piece of advice is to turn up your own voice and lower the volume of the effects ur using.) great video by the way keep it up!.
I totally feel you! And thank you for the advice! ❤
You know what they said, if you're not paying for it, you're the product, the real customers are the advertisers
truer words have never been spoken ☝️
great video!! rooting for your growth
Ty, that means a lot ❤❤!
this video is so well made! im surprised it doesnt even have 500 views:( i dont use ig for a long time. im not sure but from what i know it became just,,, unusable for artists. its all reels celebs and ads now
I sincerely could listen to you talk about anything for ages
You are very welcome to!! 😤🤗
i thought i was the only one 😭 i tried to tell a person that their art was being uploaded to wallpaper engine but i couldn't even send it 💀 not in DM's, not in comments of any post, i gave up after 3 tries
Insta's glitches/bugs are insane! I actually read an article talking about how Instagram's back-end source-code is completely janky, and how Instagram as an app is becoming too big to fix 😅
I already commented on your Instagram post but why not again now I’ve thought a little more 😆 Your video was timely and finally lit the bulb in my brain that Instgram is a waste of time for me these days, I just don't have fun with it so what is the point? I think social media as we have known it for the last decade is dead. Algorithms kill creativity and connections, now all there is is ads and Content and it's so boring. As you said, its the same thing over and over. Now with AI it's become more just stuff made by machines for other machines. Where I am having fun is away from the algorithms on Mastodon and blogging, so I'm going to focus on that! Old school blogs, personal websites, the fediverse and RSS feeds are having a come back and making the web interesting again for me. You find things through other humans sharing and recommending, it's more personal and feels more authentic. I've had so much more interaction and “engagement” with posts to Maston, it's a bit of work to discover people to follow initially but then I soon found a nice community of people who discuss rather than scream at each other. It's a lot easier to filter out what you don’t want too. I recommend maybe checking out blogging communities and the fediverse for a breath of fresh air!
I saw your message, and actually thank you because I'm checking out Mastodon, I am probably going to join just to see if I feel better about it ❤
I dont use any social media other than youtube. I really like how you approached the presentation. Dividing into three different categories. Explaining each one with a specific example. I feel more like reading a journal or research paper rather than watching a video just to stun by brain with contrast colors and rapidly moving images. Finally great use of background sound such a soothing feel.
thank you!❤
Yeah, I don’t like using Instagram anymore. I used to post a lot of photos for my small following half a decade ago; however, these past few years the app isn’t photo-friendly. Because hashtags no longer brought new people to interact with my photos, I just stopped posting. Browsing the feed isn’t fun: over half the posts on my feed are ads, sponsored posts, and ‘suggested for you’. The other half from who I follow are mostly videos. Sometimes I use the reel section in the hopes to find a laugh. Although, the comment sections are often rancid with racism, misogyny, and bullying; especially towards women and plus sized women. It’s just sad. Also, quick rant. The obnoxious cuts and subtitles are an insult to my attention and intelligence.
Yep, Insta really is not very good for photography anymore and the feed is not fun at all. And I just like subtitles and cuts 😂
I deleted Instagram because of the sexist comments. Videos of women doing innocent things and men in the comments writing disgusting things and nothing gets done about it.
Thanks for watching! Please tell me I'm not the only one having a problem with Instagram right now? As in, it's actually a BROKEN app 😬
I don't prefer Lanthimos movies because of this "lack of heart"
