  • Challengers (2024) has gotten a lot of hype because of Zendaya - now it's out in cinemas I have a lot of thoughts - for one, Challengers is not a steamy romance you probably think it is, and also it's not actually about tennis....not really. And wait until you hear what I think about the cinematography... This is a video essay and review combo, no spoilers!

Awesome video, though I think the title is a bit clickbaity. I semi-disagree that the film wasn't a 'steamy romance', but it's hard to put into words. Nearly every scene was positively dripping with erotic tensions and subtext, but the film was remarkably reserved about when and how it acted on and released those tensions. It allows for a much more complex bouquet of emotions, even contradictory ones, all wrapped up together instead of simply acting out on lust and desire.

That's a interesting way of thinking about it. I do feel like the romance can be seen as just another avenue of competition and dominance, just like the tennis is a metaphor for. Thanks so much, and yeah, a bit clickbaity, but also the best way I could describe my thoughts within a succinct title 😂

You're right that people might have expected the wrong things from it, because of the hype, but how does that make it a failure? I wouldn't say that unpleasant characters make something a failure either. Something's a failure when it doesn't achieve what it wants to achieve and I believe it wants to achieve exactly what you said: messed up powerplay between three people.

I think the question of failure comes into whether the cinematography accomplished what it designed to do effectively - or rather just obscured the narrative with how blatant it was. The question of whether the film was a "failure" could also be asked in the reference to it being marketed as an overtly steamy romance, which it's decidedly not. Provocative title, I agree, but a real consideration people are having (at least reading the audience reviews)

I honestly didn't expect to like this movie as much as I did. No one was cartoonishly evil and Mike Faist was an absolute hottie (but yes I will agree that some shots looked odd to the point where it took me out of the film for a second)

The screenplay is beyond incredible, i was so sad to see so many elements in the text just not translate whatsoever in the final cut (from directorial choices, line delivery, little glances and undertones that the script highlighted, etc. )

I need to read the script, maybe it would have translated better simply as a novel 🤔

You are absolutely hilarious. Really happy to see another one of your videos....the amount of effort you put into these is greatly appreciated! Now regarding the film: as a tennis player and a tennis fan for nearly 2 decades, judging from the trailer and your video, this film makes me feel embarrassed to say I play tennis. This is far from what the tennis world is really like and it's going to rub people the wrong way. Also, the fact that she is not even holding a correct service grip in the poster pictures of her in the film makes my skin crawl.....

Fantastic video! Your editing is so good! I actually really loved the movie and agree that it’s more erotic than super sexy and steamy but I’m totally okay with it because the tension and power plays were so much fun to watch. Loved your interpretation of the power dynamics and use of music too!

Thanks Reba, especially from you, you're videos are so aesthetic! The movie is so heavy on the music I thought it was a must 😆
