It was very tone deaf. The exhibit was "sleeping beauties, reawakening fashion" and the theme "the garden of time" based on the book. The obvious reference that they wanted, was the effort made to save and preserve art, even when the end is imminent. But i cannot imagine how no one thought that with two massive wars going on, there wouldn't be a connection between the theme and the reality. With the rich enjoying a luxurious event, while people outside are screaming for justice.

Exactly! Yeah celebrity culture sucks, but at least this one event is in service to the arts! Especially because the Met is one of the few public museums that has to actively fund /itself/. Fashion isn't just rich people dressing up fancy, it's part of our history and culture. The garments the met preserves can tell us so much about the past, be it construction methods, which can tell us about the tools and technologies available at the time, or style, which can tell us about what was culturally valuable, to any other myriad of things. Ah, the literal liberal mind at work.
Bestie this isn't a goddamn sexism thing, it's a genocide "thing". And are you not aware of just how many people hate the NFL for it's abuse of it's black players, or really it's players in general?? Because I see it. I'm incredibly aware of it. But the NFL doesn't frame itself as doing charity work, and barely any players have made political comments that don't involve them. But look at the met gala, and the amount of people who have made comments about discrimination and politics, people who rightfully opposed Russia invading Ukraine. There's less of an expectation for the NFL or sports leagues in general because hardly anyone cares or speaks about issues. These people do.
And like another said, dressing up and fashion is not limited to women. I love this ironic misogyny we've got going on, assuming all men are into sports and that all women are into fashion. It's so funny to see people claim something is just sexism/misogyny when it's both bigger than that, and ironically hypocritical. You can't weaponize sexism when it's literally irrelevant, and then ignore sexism/misogyny when it's so glaringly obvious.
Discrimination and the acknowledgement of it is NOT something for you to make a joke out of, especially not when all forms of discrimination are interlinked and originate from the same, violent, source.

this is like literally the easiest theme to do like beautiful things and they just failed like that they just in general celebrities don't know what they're doing and designers just don't give a fuck anymore.
do we really need like the gilded age part 11 at the met gala? no we needed something fun and this was fun and some people did it actually very well but most people did not

It's also because this year's met gala was also serving a purpose of turning the Western media away from the Gaza genocide and the reason people started boycotting is not because of the story, it's because the are fed up with how celebrities abuse the power that we, as people, ultimately give them. A singer with an audience of a full concert is a legend, a singer with an audience of 0 is delussional.

The theme was inspired by Taylor swifts folklore and evermore albums

anyways, the only true thing she said in this video was how the theme was based on a story called "the garden of time" by J. G. Ballard

@@voidmatic I saw a couple things about the theme chooser saying it was moderately inspired by Taylor’s two sister albums folklore and evermore

maybe they did that theme on purpose to give the celebrities a discreet middle finger (just a theory)

All my friends were talking about zendayas (idc/idk how to spell her name) dress. She looks like an emo peacock. I think she’s beautiful but that dress was not it.

This has nothing to do with the theme being on the nose and people hating just cause they’re rich, but a discussion of the rich being ignorant to their privileges and not using their influence to help others. The reason this event throws up so much discussion is because of the cost of the tickets and the idea that if these celebrities have the money to pay for a ticket to this event then why don’t they donate to charities or organizations that are trying to save lives? Key note being that most of the conversations people concerned with the need of charity work for children and their families in Gaza. It’s painful for people who want to help. To see others having the power and influence to make a difference, but choosing not to. Hope this explanation helps ❤ side note: yes the met gala is a fundraiser and is important for preserving fashion history. This is not a conversation that there should be no met gala, but that proof that celebs have the ability and influence to do more for those in need.
