  • Today I talk about Bradley Cooper’s new film, Maestro (2023)! Starring Bradley Cooper & Carey Mulligan, Maestro is Cooper’s very interesting take on the biopic film genre. BUT is the film just a shallow account of the legendary composer, Leonard Bernstein’s life and work? (hmmmmm???)

Are you planning on watching Maestro? (ps. if you don't catch it in the cinema, lucky you, it's coming to Netflix in December!)
Do you think Cooper's take on the biopic film is too shallow/hollow? Tell me what you think!

A wonderful movie that captured the crazy, complicated, twisted, sad, talented person that was the real LB. Bravo!

I am extremely interested in the movie and will definitely watch it. Even if I don’t completely understand Leonard Bernstein or his work, I want to watch it just to see how Bradley Cooper balances both playing the protagonist and the director.

I'm glad to hear it! I don't think you'll be disappointed. I didn't know a lot about Bernstein before watching the movie, but I don't think you need to to appreciate Cooper's skill both in front of, but especially behind the screen.

Yes You said it perfectly this movie "curates his life" exactly.
Here is another thought perhaps the "Maestro" is His wife and not Him
She Orchestrates him, the children and so much of the movie.

I really can see your point about his wife. She's definitely not a side character at all. I'm sure that the title "Maestro" is slightly ironic, since like you said, Bernstein orchestrates music, and she orchestrates everything else.

Are you planning on watching Maestro? (It's actually coming out on My Netflix in Dec, though I'm not sure it's the type of film typical Netflix watchers are expecting...)

I enjoyed the movie on the big screen and the performances were excellent. Bradley Cooper did an amazing job acting and directing Carey was a Wow her quiet dignity was stunning.
I would have like to have seen a bit more of the musical process of Westside Story.
    Great movie all in all

I actually think that MOST biopics suffer under the weight of the obligations to overexplain the historical context the individual lived in. It can't be ignored, but too often the chronological setting can draw too much attention to itself so I welcome the apparent exclusion of some of those elements if they cannot be filtered through the character whose life is being depicted.

I absolutely agree! As an aside, the new film Napoleon has the opposite problem. It suffers from too much spectacle and not enough character nuance (or accurate history haha). Maestro, I think, got the balance largely right.

@@UpintheAirft.Zurich wow thanks for reminding me! I've been so overwhelmed with all my streaming services in free time to watch movies, for the first time and what feels like forever they're mainly new releases. I remember in 2007 they were saying that like 1,000 albums would come out a year all through the 80s and 90s -when I was growing up -and now it's like 1,000 albums come out ... Rather back in 2007- they were saying 1,000 albums come out weekly now. I don't think many people notice that I'm sure it's actually grown since... However it seems like the movie Netflix streaming entertainment industry has taken over those kind of exponential growth numbers. I can remember certain Summers when they wouldn't be a blockbuster all summer I'd want to go see you now it's like five movies a week open that I want to go pay money for . I was forgetting something so honestly thank you thank you thank you because I know maestros wasn't on the rewrite list I drew uploaded and it should be. Heck, I'm in the mood to watch it now

    BERNSTEIN PRONOUNCED (BERNSTINE).

    • @UpintheAirft.Zurich
      @UpintheAirft.Zurich  5 месяцев назад

Aahah, yeah, he did prefer to be called "Bernstein(e)" when he was more established, fair enough. When I was watching past videos of his, they pronounced it as "Bernst(ee)n", and since that pronunciation is v. common in America, I ran with that. After looking it up though, turns out Bernstein was called "Bernst(ee)n" when he was younger but "Bernstein(e)" when he was older (to connect better with the German pronunciation). The more you know, eh?

Please, Please the correct pronunciation is STINE...not STEEN! Bernstein literally means: "Burnt Stone" in German.

The movie is bad. Stilted and fake performances by the two leads and a lot of silly editing tricks to try and make this unengaging story more interesting. Very pretentious and very boring.
