15mm British Crimean War Army 1854
This is a 15 mm representation of a British army during the Crimean war using 15 mm miniature figures. The British Army during the Crimean war was about 27,000 men strong in five divisions and these have been represented here using some older figures in the marketplace manufactured sometime in the 1970s and 80s. I particularly enjoyed putting this army together and hope that it is a accurate depiction of the forces that fought during that conflict.

This war was fought not over the possession of the Caribbean, but against the Ottomans, England, France, and Sardinia. These figures are from mini figs and old glory and Rankin file. They are 15 mm figures that are a bit older, but put together hopefully representing the armies of that day.

The amount of effort required to properly research the army organisation and find/purchase the correct figures, let alone the modelling and conversion and painting and re- basing, is astounding. Add in scale creep over the years, manufacturers differing interpretation of what constitutes a 15mm figure ( i.e. to the eyes or to the top of the hat), and that sadly, many of the older well established miniature companies no longer exist, and you have completed a huge task. Kevin I was looking at the Redbox brand Korean/Ming troops for that conflict. Box art handy for uniform- shown on Plastic Soldier Review site - site specialising in 1/72 plastic soldiers. Wikipedia has a site for Imjiin war - shows samurai mon of clans in Japanese force including ex eastern and western armies from Sekigahara. Not sure if there are any decent books in English describing Imjin war troops opposing the Japanese forces. I found it amusing that Koreans had a decent general who beat the Japanese in one land battle then someone at court got jealous of him and he lost he’s head they even at one point sacked Admiral Su then had to bring him back. Anyway given they got a few successes on battlefield a Wargame sounds like it could be fun and maybe history could be re written in some equal encounters on the Wargame table and adding Ming troops could add a little colour too. As you were looking at the Italian wars, I used a black undercoat for these. Because many of them are wearing armor. A black undercoat with a white dry brush and then applied my colors. That is my preferred method. But with my age of rifle army I have started with a white undercoat. Get the right colors of red and blue, etc.. On the history side of things I would say that interistingly during the late 16th century the Polish army was pretty westernized with a lot "western style" (mostly german) infantry regiments in service, mostly armed with pike and arquebus. The king of Poland even had a bodyguard of swiss halberdiers. The polish cavalry was basically armed like western men-at-arms and supported by foreign reiters units. Instead during the 17th century Poland re-easternized to cope with the muscovites and the turks, from here we get the famous winged hussars of 1683 fame.

Yes, I like how even in the big units every model is detailed, like the animal furs on the backs of the hussars. And also like you said the typical "ethnic" units like Cossacks and Tatars basically existed pretty much unchangingly, some until 1917 in the Russian empire.
