How's it Growing? Our Atemoya Tree after 1 Year in Phoenix, AZ! (Lots of Flowers and New Growth!)
Welcome back to The Green Yard and an exciting update video on one of our youngest fruit trees. Our Atemoya tree was planted in the Food Forest part of The Green Yard almost one year ago. It was originally planted from a small three gallon container and, while new growth has occurred, it is still on the small side. It has been putting out tons of flowers this spring and late summer. While I tried to hand pollinate some of them I was not successful. Hopefully as the tree matures I will be able to harvest some delicious fruit! Atemoya's do fruit here in the Phoenix area and are considered one of the more cold hardy members of the Custard Apple family. I feel that the new growth and flowers ...

    Is it true African Tulip trees are poisonous to North American bees? Thank you.

    • @thegreenyardaz
      @thegreenyardaz День назад

      Hello @MrOrcslayer, thank you for watching and commenting! I knew that they were toxic to some stingless bees in some tropical locations like Hawaii but not North American bees. So I did a little research and found that they are toxic to many bees and pollinating insects but it seems that the reason why is because the African Tulip flowers has very sticky nectar, which can inhibit flight in those insects. My tree has not flowered yet so I have not personally dealt with any of these issues but good information to know for those choosing to plant this tree in their Green Yard.

    My lychee tree is not growing what could be the problem?

    • @thegreenyardaz
      @thegreenyardaz День назад

      Hello @876Buckshots, thank you for watching and commenting! There could be several reasons why your Lychee may not be growing. The main one being that they like very acidic soil. Here in Phoenix, we have alkaline soil, so adding an amendment like agricultural sulfur can help to lower that PH and allow the tree to access any nutrients in the soil. The other reason may be that it is just taking it's time to grow. Lychees seem to be very slow growing here in the Phoenix area. They typically will put on new growth three to four times a year and generally it is only three to six inches at a time. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

    What kind of sun protection do you give your mango trees? My Nam Doc Mei suffered some sunburn its first summer. It is under noon day shade and then I only had 30% shade cloth when it got hit with the western sun. This summer I gave it 60% shade cloth from the western sun and it’s looking super healthy. It almost died its first summer. I’m curious, did your dad’s OS mango survive? I had an Orange Sherbet mango that was getting too much radiant heat from two walls that were too close to my new tree. Had 30% shade cloth but just couldn’t survive its first summer. I know someone else whose OS died and learned from someone who grows them in Florida that they seem to be a little more delicate to get started. Plan on planting another mango since I’m finally having success.

    • @thegreenyardaz
      @thegreenyardaz День назад

      Hello @daveaz9962, thank you for watching and commenting! I try to do full shade starting anywhere from 11am to 3pm. This mango in particular (now that it's older) gets shade from our house starting around 3pm in the summer. When I first started I would use old palm leaves to provide dappled shade until they got full shade from the house or our support trees. I have found that as they get older Mango's actually like to get more sun but the first three years or so they definitely need shade. My dad's OS is actually doing really well. It has yet to fruit but it has a really great shape and is around four feet tall. His tree does get a lot of shade though and is in a very protected microclimate. I'm so happy to hear that you are having success! I love Mangos and I feel that they are one of our easier tropical trees to grow here in Phoenix once they get established. Let me know if you have any other questions.

      Brown Turkey is one of the fastest growing figs I`ve ever seen and the fruits are large, abundant and one of the sweetest I`ve seen. You can graft other varieties on its branches. I guess if you`re stuck with only growing in pots then you`d want to choose something more delicious but this variety is very delicious to me. They`re cold hardy too but if they do freeze back and the roots are mulched and insulated and you lose the branches the tree will rapidly grow back and produce figs that same year. I protect my trees if we have a few very hard freezes. It isn`t hard to cover a tree with a couple of layers and put warm lights or a closed cooler full of very hot water under the covering and monitor the temps with a wireless sensor. I refuse to allow my best trees to freeze.

      @ALLDRAINSEMERGENCYPLUMBING I have one that I got from Shamus that is a black sugar cane variety. I believe it's either Thai or Vietnamese. And my newest variety is purple Hawaiian. Surprisingly my purple Hawaiian sugar cane is the most hardy. I've had my black sugar cane for a few years now and unfortunately it is dying from red spot fungus

      Hello @bigpapaplantman5126, thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate your kind words, that is amazing that you are seeing such growth on your sugarcane. I have been thinking about planting sugarcane but not sure if it's worth it. Would you recommend? I agree, the small increase in humidity during the monsoon season is definitely helping all my trees too.

    Aren’t you worried that letting a first or second year mango tree fruit is going to kill it? Have you ever tasted a fruit punch mango? I have a Nam Doc Mei but I am trying to figure out what kind of mango tree to plant next. Your trees are looking great.

    • @thegreenyardaz
      @thegreenyardaz 23 дня назад

      Hello @daveaz9962, thank you for watching and commenting! From my experience, a Mango tree will not hold onto fruit unless it's ready. My Fruit Punch and Spirit of 76 dropped all fruit until this year. I feel that they did this because this year they finally have a good structure and are ready to fruit. This Super Alphonso has always had a good structure so it must be ready. I am planning on covering it this winter though to make sure it makes it through the cold. I have not tasted a Fruit Punch but I have one on the tree and will put out a tasting video soon. Honestly, I think any Mango tree is great. I feel that they are one of, if not the, easiest tropical fruit tree to grow here in Phoenix. I've enjoyed our Carrie Mango so that might be one to consider too. Thank you for your kind words! Let me know if you have any other questions.

      Hello @samiam777, thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate your kind words about my Mango trees. I'm not sure if they are going to mess up the wall or not. Typically, from my observation of mature Mango trees here in Phoenix, grafted Mango trees end up acting like a dwarf variety of Mangos and top out around 10 - 15 feet. I plan on continually trimming them to keep them smaller and more manageable as well. I guess time will tell, I appreciate you letting me know and I will keep it in mind as they get more mature.

    Hey man, I just bought a brown turkey from a Lowes, im also out here in the low valley.. What would you recommend for watering? I havent put it in the gorund yet as I'm trying to break up the caliche with elemental sulfur applications.. So i transpotted it into a 10 gallon fabric pot and it seems like its doing just OKAY, if i dont water it in the earily morning the leaves sag, Im brand new to growing anything outdoors here in the desert, some feedback would be highly appreciated thanks bro!.

    • @thegreenyardaz
      @thegreenyardaz 2 месяца назад

      Hello @haze9601 thank you for watching and commenting! There are a lot of factors that go into how much water a tree needs including it's age, the soil type it's planted into, etc. Since it is in a fabric pot (grow bag), from my experience, I would water it two to three times a week. I would also make sure it has shade after 11am. I feel that this will help it survive until you are able to put it in the ground. I have several plants that I had to place in pots/grow bags and they are doing well with bi-weekly water and afternoon shade. I hope this helps and I hope you're able to harvest some figs soon! Let me know if you have any other questions.

    There isn't an issue with the roots being that close to your block fence?

    • @thegreenyardaz
      @thegreenyardaz 2 месяца назад

      Hello @doloresseames5067, thank you for watching and commenting! I have not had any issues and I really don't foresee any issues in the future. The reason is because I am on flood irrigation, which helps properly water the trees. There have been many growers in the Phoenix area that have found that deep watering less frequently allows the roots to follow the water further into the ground thereby minimizing any potential damage to foundations or walls. Proper deep watering can also be done by hand through the use of a berm around the root zone of the tree. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

      @thegreenyardaz 23 дня назад

      Hello @alejandroortiz4510, thank you for watching and commenting! They actually give a lot of shade but only in the warmer months. They are deciduous so they loose their leaves during our winter months here in Phoenix. This is part of the reason that I think they are one of the best shade trees for Phoenix, if you're using them as a foundation to create a tropical food forest. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Appreciate your videos and knowledge share! I just picked up a Pixie Zee from one of the big box stores and brought it home only to have it get really crispy and curl on me! I had originally thought I could place it on my patio by my hot tub, but maybe it got too hot there? Will it bounce back? I have since repotted into a larger container and placed in a grass/dirt area. I have about 2-3 inches of mulch at the top. Any tips and advice would be much appreciated. The plant has a set of peaches and I was hoping to have a harvest! Thanks!

      @thegreenyardaz 23 дня назад

      Hello @EdnaSmith, thank you for watching and commenting! Of course, I love growing plants and I figure I can share my knowledge and experience to help others grow too. That great that you were able to buy a Pixie Zee, I'm sorry to hear it's not doing well. It really just depends on how damaged it is. I have seen Peach trees be very resilient before when given the correct care. Is it doing okay in our summer heat? What I do is, for the first year, no matter the tree, I give it afternoon shade. The mulch is definitely helping to keep the soil moist so that is a good thing. Let me know if you have any other questions.
