  • Welcome back to The Green Yard! I am so excited for today's video because I finally purchased and am getting to plant a tree I have wanted for the last six years. The Redland White Sapote tree is native to Mexico, Central America and into the top of South America. These trees have a baseball sized fruit that are supposed to have a consistency similar to a pear with the taste of tropical custard. We have two other Sapote trees in The Green Yard, a Chico Sapote (Sapodilla) and a Black Sapote. So far our Sapote trees have done very well and I am hoping to have abundant harvests from them soon. The White Sapote does very well in the Phoenix area. They will need late afternoon shade in the summer and cold protection in the winter for the first few years until they get acclimated. When planting this tree I created a 50/50 mixture of native soil and planting soil. I also added in a thick layer of mulch and agricultural sulfur to lower the soil PH around the tree. I can't wait to do a growing update in spring of 2025 to see how well this tree has done. If you have any questions about our White Sapote or any other fruiting or flowering tree please comment below. Also, if you like what you saw, please make sure to like, subscribe, and follow us on social media.

That’s a beautiful tree. I love watching updates on all your trees. I am starting my own tree collection this year. Your videos have given me hope that they can survive in our climate.

Hello @KK-vj6jy, thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate all your kind words about my videos and trees. That is amazing that you are starting your own tree collection this year. There are so many fruiting and flowering trees and plants that do really well here in Phoenix, especially if you have a microclimate established for them.

They most certainly can, there are at MANY different trees that can do very well here. See my tour video for some of the easiest ones to grow.

I have a white sapote in my orchard (tropical fruit tree forest). Mine is 7 years old and putting out a ton of fruits every year. They grow like weeds, you don't need to apply sulfur to them. However, they love mulch and fertilizer (I only use cheap fertilizers for this fella). I mulch mine heavily with garden wastes, ice cream bean and sugarcane cuttings. The fruits are creamy and sweet and delicious. Good luck.

Hello @Arcanhael, thank you for watching and commenting! That is amazing! It sounds like your tropical fruit tree forest is beautiful. Are you located here in the Phoenix area? I ask because I am trying to showcase other people's Green Yards on the channel, would you be open to giving me a tour of your food forest to be put on the channel? I appreciate all of your other information about mulch and fertilizer, I am so excited to try the fruit! Just let me know!

Love the videos! I wanna try a white aspire as well. Also I saw one of your other videos on the Java bananas I can’t seem to find them anywhere here in the valley. Would you ever consider selling one of the pups?

Definitely plant a white sapote tree, or 2 💚
If GY is unable to supply a banana pup, I can help you as well.

Hi @xlZENlx, thank you for watching and commenting! I really appreciate all of the kind words! I know that Greenlife by Shamus O'leary has Blue Java Bananas in stock. I'm not sure if I have any pups that are ready to be separated but I will look. Email me at thegreenyardarizona@gmail.com and I'll see what I can do.

Hello @RyansBackyardNursery, thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate your kind words! I do have a Black Sapote as well and it is doing fantastic. I did an update video last year, which you can watch here, ruclips.net/video/1QfZ8ojb9qE/видео.html. It has grown about three feet since this video came out. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi, Very nice tree. How much sulfur did you use?

Hello @AngelicaGarden, thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate the kind words about our new White Sapote tree. I don't actually measure out how much I put on each tree, I simply sprinkle it around. I would say I typically use around 1/2 a cup of sulfur per tree when I apply. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions!

Will this tree produce fruit in the Yucatan of Mexico?

Hello @davidrandall7708, thank you for watching and commenting! From the research I have done I believe it is native to the southern half of Mexico and produces/grows very well there. Let me know if you have any other questions.
