I think the genius of James May (and the former case of Top Gear) is perfectly highlighted in this video. Despite the Cybertruck being out for sometime, James brings a totally new perspective and conveys in simple ways (e.g. a ruler against the side). True expert and entertainer!
Totally agree! The rule, and the lack of a feeling for a knob to adjust temperature, air speed, and more. Call me a traditionalist, but I prefer a vehicle with knobs and sticks over one with flat surfaces everywhere.
0:13 this very moment I expected to see Clarkson ironically blaming James for ending TGT for choosing electric car...while Richard would literally avoid driving fast and powerful EVs
@@ZesPak A ruler, sometimes called a rule, scale or a line gauge, is an instrument used to make length measurements, whereby a user estimates a length by reading from a series of markings called "rules" along an edge of the device.
Someone on another channel summed up the Cybertruck very well - "The sort of car a divorced dad would buy to impress his 17 year-old daughter's friend". Probably because that's exactly the sort of person who designed it...

@@MyDarkMuffin The particular alloy of stainless steel Tesla used for the Cybertruck is very prone to corrosion. "Keeping it dirty" will hide the surface corrosion.

10:00 there will never be a time where touch screens are more reliable, and having to read to confirm what you are selecting on a touchscreen will always be inherently distracting
Airbus & Boeing's large passenger planes have interactive screens in the cockpit. I am sure the technology has gotten reliable. Sure some car manufacturers may cut corners and we may see some issues. As long as some redundancy is built in, no reason not to adopt. Some of the recent consumer concerns sound similar to the times the mobile phones went touch screen. But with time consumer confidence in touch screens for cars will only grow..waiting for you on the other side :)
Trying to use a touchscreen while going down the road is a nightmare. Give me knobs and buttons. Physical interfaces will always be superior if the thing you are trying to manipulate moves.

This is what I loved about James on Top Gear. He would understand the concepts of design and the tiny details like making the panels slightly curved instead of flat to make it appear correct visually. Or how flat panels require perfect alignment, or it sticks out negatively.
@@occashares I'd argue it actually builds some flexing into the material - a panel is put under tension by its fixings at the edges, which is where the crumpled look comes from with something too flat.
@@ravecrab I suppose we are looking at the issue from two different perspectives. When making air conditioning ducting two folds were made diagonally to form a cross on the center. This would reduce drumming and flexing due to resonance. It was simple to do with a sheet metal folder. Putting a convex or concave curve is much more difficult requiring a press. Having a panel being flat it will resonate freely, putting it under tension will only raise the resonate frequency.
That's what I missed when Top Gear was sold to the BBC - it became a highly scripted reality show, where you could see the punchlines coming a mile away.

Dead serious: i just woke up from a James May dream I guess cause i watched this yesterday... He came over my house and drove my caterham... It was the most boring uneventful peaceful dream ive ever had and i swear i ended up sleeping better than I have in years. Thanks James
there's a huge difference between understanding design wise you need to shape something a certain way, and 100% accuracy during production. Also, a mm misalignment does not change the overal appearance of flat shiny pnels, a slight curve does. That being said, I'm not convinced they designed it to the level James thinks. Big panels are going to have a tendency to bow, especially considering expansion and contraction due to temperature, so they probably designed the attachments so that at least they bow outwards because that looks best. But I doubt there's any precision engineering to exact curves. They'll just have a tolerance.
the panels on most vehicles produced at scale don't align completely flush. James mentions this when he is pointing out the Dodge Ram (that he forgot to record) ...the curvature of the panels on most vehicles hide these imperfections. But they are much more noticeable on the Cyber Truck since there are so many hard edges
Earlier than that, back in the day, Atari made an arcade game called "Battlezone" where all of the vehicles were rendered line graphics, and looked exactly like this abomination of a truuuuck.

I think the genius of James May (and the former case of Top Gear) is perfectly highlighted in this video. Despite the Cybertruck being out for sometime, James brings a totally new perspective and conveys in simple ways (e.g. a ruler against the side). True expert and entertainer!

🙄
Airbus & Boeing's large passenger planes have interactive screens in the cockpit. I am sure the technology has gotten reliable. Sure some car manufacturers may cut corners and we may see some issues. As long as some redundancy is built in, no reason not to adopt. Some of the recent consumer concerns sound similar to the times the mobile phones went touch screen. But with time consumer confidence in touch screens for cars will only grow..waiting for you on the other side :)

This is what I loved about James on Top Gear. He would understand the concepts of design and the tiny details like making the panels slightly curved instead of flat to make it appear correct visually. Or how flat panels require perfect alignment, or it sticks out negatively.
The curve reduces flexing

13:30 James predicted the robotaxi 5 weeks before it dropped
"I'm certain the designers made all these panels purposefully flat or rounded"
Meanwhile you got parts that arent even aligned properly.
Cybertruck engineers: Ermm, yes. What he said.
Designers made it flat or slightly rounded, engineers and machinists couldn't make it as precise as the design specs
there's a huge difference between understanding design wise you need to shape something a certain way, and 100% accuracy during production.
I've heard about the manufacturing difficulties. It was not on purpose. They'd have left it flat if they physically were able
It's really simple. The designer just had nostalgia for ps1 graphics.
Earlier than that, back in the day, Atari made an arcade game called "Battlezone" where all of the vehicles were rendered line graphics, and looked exactly like this abomination of a truuuuck.
