  • Welcome back to The Green Yard! I have been wanting to put out a video on one of my favorite trees since it was planted over a year and a half ago. Soursop trees are in the same genus Annona and are part of the Annonaceae family. They are native to Central and South America but have been distributed and grown in tropical and sub-tropical parts of the world. The fruit and leaves are said to have a myriad of beneficial health benefits. Here is Phoenix, Soursops are a more difficult tree to grow. They need lots of protection from both our Summer Sun and our Winter temperatures. These trees need to be grown in a microclimate, specifically one that provides them protection and no sun after 10am. This allows the tree to live through our intense summer sun, just like The Green Yards tree did this past, record breaking summer. They also need to be cold protected with any temperatures below 50 degrees. Although I found last winter, that mine was decently hardy and needed some cold in order to loose it's old leaves and push out new growth. If you have any questions or want to see a video about any of our different fruiting or flowering trees please comment below. Also, for more great Phoenix plant content, follow us on social media.

Hello, thank you for watching and commenting! Yes, both of the trees have been doing very well even with our extra cold winter last year and our extra hot summer. I'm excited to keep updating everyone as they get more and more mature. Thank you for the kind words!

Hello @bobmcallister8028, thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate your kind words about my garden. I made a mistake with our Soursop this winter and turned off the supplemental heat source I use to keep it warm for a few nights. I think that it died but I'm giving it a couple months to see if it comes back. It is the only tree I lost this winter.

@The Green Yard I just bought a baby soursop tree here in arizona. Not sure how long I should keep in a pot before planting in the ground. Also, I only have the westside of the house that has a wall to plant the tree, so I probably have to shade them for the summer?

Hello @InfalliableProof, thank you for watching and commenting! That is awesome that you bought a Soursop tree!! Some people actually grow these trees in pots and have had success keeping them alive. If you keep it in a pot it is easier to lower the soil PH and keep it warm in the winter. If you do plant it outside on the westside of the house it will definitely require shade after 10am in the summer and cold protection in the winter. This tree is located on the westside of our property but it has a large shade tree that gives it shade after 10am. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I'm in Arizona also. Do you sell soursop slips for planting? If so, I would like to purchase.

Hello @lorraynemichelle5423, thank you for watching and commenting! That is great that you are in Arizona too! At this moment in time I am not selling any plants. The only place that I know of in the valley that sells Soursop trees is Greenlife by Shamus O'leary. That is where I got my Soursop tree from, I would recommend checking out that nursery to get a Soursop tree.

Hello @TwanaHanson-dv2yp, thank you for watching and commenting! I'm sorry to hear that you are sick and not doing very well. Unfortunately, my Soursop did not do very well this past winter and died back to the roots. I thought it was gone but it just started coming back. This means I will not have the ability to harvest any leaves or do anything with the tree for several years while it recovers and gets back to the size it was before. I hope you are able to find another source of leaves.

Hello, thank you for watching and commenting! I bought my Soursop tree from Greenlife by Shamus O Leary Tropicals. They are located in south Phoenix and have an amazing variety of tropical plants available for sale. I would say that they probably won't have any more Soursop until spring but still worth reaching out to see. Let me know if you have any other questions.
