I talk about photography, movie-making, and storytelling in general! I am a constantly curious, creative storyteller. I love tech, gear, and everything that helps me tell stories. My primary focus is on Leica and Apple, but am also exploring other brands.
I love sharing experiences. That's why I came here, to share my 30-plus years of experience in storytelling in every way possible. I try to make videos about things I have not been able to find videos about or approach subjects and themes from a different angle.
In real life, I am an international working fiction tv- and film director, writer, and photographer. I worked in Germany, the US, Mexico, China, the Czech Republic, Portugal, the Netherlands, Italy, Austria, and my country of origin, Switzerland.

It works but it duplicate the images back in LrC, really frustrating
Thank you for this! Great video.
The 43 matches how my mind composes and isolates what will be in the shot. But when I can’t back up any further I miss the 28. At the end of the day with the 43, there are less shots missed and I’ve spent less time constructing shots which look more academic and less spontaneous. But if I’m in the mood for architectural spaces, the 28 wins the day.
I have the Q2M (28). It is beautiful, so very well make and a joy to use. Compared to my Nikon D800 it's a featherweight. With the Nikon I enjoy prime lenses and don't like to take a lot with me. Having only a 35mm/f1.8 and a 85mm/f1.4 I've always loved the 85mm so much more. Yes, it is a much better lens and the beautiful, soft bokeh is truly dreamy. But, I also like just "getting in there" with less "distractions". So I really appreciated your video, as for me, I preferred the Q3 43 images just about every time. The only caveat, as pointed out, was if the 43 was used to frame the shots first each time it could really could skew the results. Thank you, your video comparison was really helpful as I'm looking at the q3 43 as a compliment to the Q2M.
Leica had a very famous focal length for most of its existence, the 35 mm. Why oh why did they put a 43 & a 28 on this camera? Why? I-know the circular diameter of a 23x36 sensor is 43.2 mm or a true Standard lens, but the 35 is somehow the most revered. If Leica makes this with a 35/2 lens, or a 35/2.8 compact lens, I will rush out and buy one. I fondled these in the store and the views were quite non-Leica Ordinary. Until then i will keep scanning the amazing negatives off my Contax T* 38mm/2.8. I get 49 MP scans and The Look.
A lot of what you are explaining can also be done with a manual SLR, including zone focusing. You are also confined to fixed focal length lenses, so you don't have the range and lens options of an SLR. That said, I have been using my M3 for decades and arguably it's limitations can force me to be more creative to overcome them. But I do like my Nikons...
I am a refugee from medium format to Leica. As mentioned in another comment, I just ordered the SL3-S, mainly for video. But have been using Hasselblad H for 25 years, and the Fuji GFX. I am also quite familiar with the Phase One systems, both the XF and XT, as well as with the Alpa. I have also used the Leica S2, S006, S007 and S3.
Great video…love the look. I just ordered an SL3-S, and wonder what you use for a battery solution for this video rig. Thanks.
From the sample shots here it makes me challenge my original view of the 43 being better for my stuff. I can see literally a different perspective here …. BUT … It sort of depends on the subject of what you mostly shoot I guess. Not sure these photos are it for me so is it then representative ? Or do I just crop ? Hmmm Or (sacrilege warning) … just get the 43 and shoot on the same prime I normally do and for anything else just use my iPhone 16 pro max ? Note : I don’t really shoot landscape much and I also have a Fuji xt5 with a variety of lenses anyway Don’t have an answer yet myself
4:27 aiii, this is the reason I loose sharpness. I guess manual focus it is! I use external preview monitor, now I understand what was ruining the sharpness!
This could have been a great video without the loud disturbing background music
I agree with your sentiment. I recently had a Leica for a weekend, first time. End of the first day I hated that camera... all manual and so minimalistic... how stupid. The day after, I wemt for a photo walk with a friend and, by the end of the day, everything just fell into place and made sense. Can't describe it any other way but now I just love the system!
Wow, what a video. One needs to make serious money to go trough all this buying and selling and buying. I’m still watching videos about the M system. Shooting Q2 and Q2M in the meantime.
Hi Florian, i love your videos, very informative! Greetings from the Philippines.
Great info! Thanks:)
Haben digitale Leica M nicht sowiso eingebaute Filter? Ich kann an der M240 jedenfalls Kontrastfilter rot, gelb, orange,grün, blau einstellen wen ich den Modus auf SW stelle..
Yeah, I find I am glad I stayed with the 28 as I can get more content .. and the dynamic perspective reminds me of the glorious Nikkor 24/ 2.8 I used forty years ago … Have found ways to back off enough to minimize face distortion .. If it ain’t broke , don’t fix it enters one’s thoughts:) It seems the APO lens is sharper and more colorful . But we can bring the 28 colors up in post .. I guess I would like to have both :) but, sticking with the 28:)
I have a chance to buy the Q3 28 used with a couple of accessories for $3500. It has a couple of blemishes. On the top plate is a coating mark that only shows up at certain angles. The more troublesome blemish is on the top of the flippy screen with the paint scraping off from the action of moving the screen in and out. Have you or anyone else experienced this? And is the camera still worth it for $3500?
Brag away ! If you enjoy it. Buy it. People generally spend too long explaining or justifying why they have expensive equipment. Also. Love the 24-90 lens. One of my all time favourites. It’s like having some great primes at many focal lengths. Just heavy ! I’ve loads of Leica gear back to the m9. M240. M9 monochrom. Some old film cameras. Never sell any of it. Loving the sl2 still and the m11 black paint with the matching 50 noctilux . Haven’t got the sl3 yet.
Please try French rangefinder as Foca 3 Stars and Telka III 6x9
Why not buy Voigtlander's 12mm finder for use on your M?
What are the differences between a Leica Summar 50mm f2 LTM vs Leica Summicron 50mm f2 LTM? Thanks
I just picked up the 50mm Noctilux 0.95 and it has transformed the experience using the M11-P. The images are works of art. I do enjoy the 21mm Voigtlander. I posted a few of the Nocti on my most recent video.
I sold the 50 Lux-SL in favor of the 90 Cron pre-AA (Mandler, 1983, 11136). It’s magic wide open and renders very pleasing portraits.
Would love to see how it compares with the lumix s9
I’m interested in photography. Why do I need 43mm when 28mm can do?
Very helpful video for a starter like myself. My question is, how to deal with the lack of individual viewfinders for different focal lengths in old rangefinder systems? Some viewfinders are just prohibitively expensive.
Years and years ago I started saving for an M6. Then I realized that even if I got the M6 it'd be ages before I could use it - a 50mm costs as much as the body. And it'd take a lifetime before I could afford a tele and a wide. Re your point about the cost of film processing. I think even a simple M and lens cost more, a lot more thousands of film rolls.
Thank you
Very helpful. Thanks for posting.
Yeah right! Everything has a price and a hobbyist like you will change cameras later on.
🤣
The type of photos you shot a summicron will work the same
Okay
Did your wife know how much the lens?
Yes. She does of course!
Thank you very much for this very informative video! Regarding this huge amount of gear you travel with: Do you have a recommendation for insurance? I have one in Germany but it is very expensive...
I am also a 35 and 50 on my M body I also have 28mm i hardly use the 28mm this is one reason I am resisting the Leica Q for long. the Q3 43 now seems interesting 🙂, but I think the Q 28mm is good for travel if you only need to bring one camera
Great comparo Florian. My Q1 is often set to 35 crop mode but I love the 28. As you rightly say - it’s more challenging 🔴🇦🇺✌️
Hi!! .. I am planning to buy Leica sl3 system instead of Sony’s a1ii .. very much in landscape, street, travel and very little on sports and wildlife side . Have Leica Q2 and impressed by leica’s image quality and colours . So will you please give me good suggestions?? . I was in canon system for almost 10 years . After then I sold my all gears and bought Leica Q2 . Now I am planning to buy a new system. I am a hobbyist and traveler .. please reply…🙏
Hi! Fantastic idea ;-) The SL3, of course, is a bit heavier than a Q camera when traveling. But if you come from a Sony or a Canon system, you are familiar with heavier lenses. The quality is similar to the Q3, which I think is a big step from the Q2. I personally love Leica's 24-90 and 90-280 zoom lenses. But of course, they are pretty expensive. When I first changed to the SL system, I got the Panasonic S Pro zooms... 24-70 and 70-200 with a 2x extender... The lenses are really good, and I can totally recommend them... the 2x adapter is not so good. It not only loses apertures, it loses sharpness as well. Maybe check out Leica's 100-400 instead. Without ever trying it, I am pretty sure you'll get better results than with the Panasonic 70-200 and the 2x extender... maybe you start with the 24-70 from Panasonic and the 100-400 Leica lens? Let me know if you have any other specific questions.
@ thanks a lot for ur valuable replay..😍😍😍
I have a problem when i connect dlux 7 - 007 download the video from the leica app it cannot be download, only photo can be downloaded . Is it must be go to setting menu or how?
I never tried to download a video. I am not sure if this is possible with the Photos App!
May I ask how good is Q2? And Does the screen has touch sensing to change focus point?
It is a very good camera! Maybe for really low-light situations, the Q3 is superior. Yes, you can yous the monitor to focus a specific point; it works on the camera's LED as well as with the Leica FOTOS App.
Thank you very much
For a someone who is not a fan of WA lenses I must say I like your photos of Zurich.
Thank you a lot!
How was the weight of this lens when walking around all day ?
If you can handle a heavy SL2 this lens is ok
No problem for me. I am used to the 24-90, which is about a quarter heavier.
It seems very harsh and clinical. In other words, not Lieca Like. IMHO.
Interesting point.
I am frustrated trying to program the thumbwheel button. I have saved in profile 3 the monochrome but if I want to jump from colour to B&W, it takes too much time so i am trying to program the button to B&W. Can you assist me. Thanks
I am very sorry, but I can not help because I do not have the camera anymore. Usually, the Leica camera's buttons are programable by just pressing and holding them. Then a menu pops up with all the possible functions that can be assigned to the specific button. Leica, unfortunately, does not give you the chance to assign any function you want. If your desired function is unavailable, I highly suggest writing to Leica. They really do listen to their customers, and functions are often added through firmware updates.
Happy New Year! What a good video you made here - I totally share your Leica philosophy and enthusiasm in general. I'm also very much into the M10R. I have discovered that with a bit of practice I can actually do zone focus based street photography with the Summicron 90 mm ASHP with a relatively high success rate - you just have to practice starting from infinity and then 'get into your fingers' how much you need to turn the focus ring ... It actually works! Apart from that, I can only echo your US-friend regarding the S-system. The camera body is a bit bigger, but not bigger than it can also be used for street and landscape photography. I shoot a S Type 007 - and it is a FANTASTIC camera. The lenses are beyond description (probably the best lenses ever made by man). The 37 MP are perfect for most purposes - meaning that the raw pics are manageable in size. Last but not least the camera is now affordable (because of the coming of the S3) 🙂 Regards, Jan
Hey Jan... Happy New Year to you! Thank you for the S input. I am a bit afraid of the weight because I always like to have everything with me... but I will eventually look into the S System. My friend reported the same thing to me about the quality of the lenses. - I will try out the zone focusing with the 90... an interesting approach, thank you!
I got the 43 but use to have the original q and am with you. 28 is challenging but the more versatile camera so I probably will sell the 43 🙈
Oh wow... okay... Thank you for that information!
I will be glad to buy your 43!
Thanks, saved me $70
your welcome!
Thank you for the video. It help me to decide that this camera it is not for me. The photos out of camera are not good to many things you have to fix in post, noice and distortion and much more! So if you like to spend a lot of time editing your photos this camera is for you! And one more thing is that people are complaning about dust on the censor!
Okay. Glad the video could help!
🙏🏻🙏🏻Thank You S⭕️⭕️⭕️⭕️⭕️⭕️ much ‼️🙏🏻🙏🏻 Have been checking for this for week , very helpful 🙏🏻🙏🏻‼️
Cool... thank you for letting me know!
I get it done already . But the last 2 effects cannot be installed as it say not enough memory 😅😅‼️gotta check out the internal memory storage . I think it does not like M11 that has a lot of internal storage pre installed 😏😏‼️
louder backgrounds music, and more face microphone plants color lamps in frame
okay.
Like some others I have a Q1 that’s set to high contrast monochrome and yes I found out that a red25 does nothing for my images. Quite the opposite! What I do use to accentuate sky and cloud in b&w for instance is a variable CP filter. I only lose 1 stop of light if set correctly and get super cloud and dark skies galore! Thanks for your videos Florian and Happy New Year to you and yours✌️🇦🇺
Happy New Year to you! Thank you for your kind comment!
