Can I get my DL800 transmission to work?
Another small step towards getting Project Top Gun on the road. Welcome to Episode-55 where I tackle a few small projects and one big one: getting my DL800 transmission to successfully run clutch adaptation! I ditched the HTG-Tuning idea and cancelled my order. (Those thieves still haven't refunded me yet...3-months and counting.) It's been a long road to get to this point and I can smell success on the horizon; but do I get to taste it?     EUR 170 for the CAN Bus logger, ouch... understandable yet still, ouch Do you actually need that thing if you happen to have one of those OBD2 scanners?

    How come of all the VAG brands you keep referencing Škoda? You being an American (or Canadian?), I would expect you to say "VW" or even more likely "Audi." I don't think Škoda ever had any dealers in NA... 🧐

    Would you happen to know the limitations for a modern ECU being able to live tune, besides the ROM?

      @@JohnZornAscended I’m not a tuning expert but I don’t believe you can do live tuning on the OEM ECUs. You can modify parameters but then have to upload the ECU config, test and rinse/repeat until you achieve the desired tune. But aftermarket ECUs like MoTeC, Haltech, Syvecs, etc allow you to do live tuning.

      If you have the original 5M engine, I don’t think so. Plus it would be way overkill if you’re running stock power.

    Small tip on finding temperatures: If you're able to get to the sensors connector without dismantly any other electronics you can simply disconnect that sensor and should see a drop to 0x00 in value. Most automotive temperature sensor application start at -40°C for 0x00 which is also used to detect a short to ground or open line. On the flip side, if you short out the 2 pins of that connector you will see a rise to the maximum hex value. Thank you so much for doing this, I had no idea there was software to read it bit by bit as well. This will be very helpful in decoding my vehicle from here on out!

    Hi Dan, I've got a question regarding Savvycan + CL1000, I've watched your video on how you select hardware & connect to vehicle, and instantly you're receiving information. I've purchased a low cost can interface [Dauntless Devices in CO], and I'm having no luck in trying to achieve the very basic connection you're able to get with the CSS HW. I'm curious to know if there is an issue with the Vehicle Bus, I'm talking to a MY16 VW Jetta.

      @@Hye993gtv hi there! I know exactly the issue you’re having. You need to tap the CAN BUS twisted pair *behind* the CAN Gateway in your car. I eliminated the CAN Gateway in my build as I only have one OEM CAN BUS (powertrain) so I don’t need it. However, on any VAG group car, there are multiple CAN BUS networks that converge at the gateway. The gateway filters out all CAN BUS traffic unless queried by VCDS or ODIS via OBD2 port, which is why you’re not seeing the traffic stream with your device connect to the OBD2 port. Tap the powertrain CAN BUS twisted pair at some point behind the gateway and you’ll be off and running. Hope this helps!

      @@MacEvoyING Hi! Since I’m only running the OEM powertrain CANBUS on the Ultima, I elected to not integrate the OEM CAN gateway into my chassis. It would really provide no additional functionality. Good eye!

    Great video mate, what equipment would you suggest to allow a BMW m57 Ecu to integrate into a Chrysler vehicle canbus?

      Hi! You would need a CAN gateway of sorts that could take signals from m57 ECU and 'publish' selected messages to the Chrysler CAN BUS (and vice versa). You might want to checkout the CAN Triple...it's a newer DiY product from mintonperformance.com. Check it out; might do exactly what you need.

      another thought: if the m57 ECU and Chrysler canbus are both running at the same canbus speed (usually 500Mbps), you could try simply adding the m57 to the Chrysler powertrain CANBUS. You might get message collision (if CANID's overlap between the two) but doing a "sniff" independently on each would answer that question.

    I have moded my DL800 and sent HTG GCU the mech! I got it sent back to me but now HTG is a dead end.. I have to find a new mech and go with CANTCU apparently is almost operating! I've heard you're working with them too. 🤞

      @@Syncrogreg Hi! Yep, I’m working with Kenneth at CANformance with CANTCU. We are close but I’m working getting the right software installed on TCU-1 (mech) to eliminate a persistent fault code, before we proceed with CANTCU integration. I hope to have this fixed in the next week or two. Then we can continue tweaking CANTCU code to make the trans happy and fully functional. Thanks for reaching out!!

      @@Syncrogreg And since you need a new mech, make sure you order it with the proper software version (exact replacement part number from your old mech). The ECM/TCM is *very* finicky about this and the TCM software must match what the ECM expects to see.

      It was installed on the car when I bought in in 2009. But you might want to check Raptor Racing...they have lots of vintage MK2 stuff. Hope this helps!

    Reference your CANBUS Pt1 video did your canbus transmit all the time with the ignition on. I'm looking at an Audi RS4 using SavvyCAN , with the ignition on and the bus is totally silent unless I also plug in VCDS and query a module, then everything seems to work OK. This doesn't seem to reflect what everyone else on RUclips liike you seems to get a constant data stream from when they first plug in.

      @@julianpalmer4674 It’s because the OBD2 port on all factory Audi cars is wired directly to the CAN Gateway that filters out ALL CAN traffic unless it’s queried by a device (like VCDS). To see all powertrain traffic all the time, you need to tap the powertrain CAN BUS wires *behind* the CAN Gateway (thereby bypassing it). In my video, notice in the diagram I have no CAN Gateway in my car so nothing is filtering traffic. Hope this helps!

    I know I am 3 months late here, but I really recommend mounting these sensitive pressure sensor remotely (run a line from the galley plug to the sensor which is mounted to the chassis). I have seen too many of these sensors fail because of engine vibration.

    You may need someone to do a bench reflash on the unit to get the correct software installed. I’m in a trade group with a few dozen technicians that specialize in module reprogramming and it’s crazy what some of these vehicles require. Odis is very particular. You may end up needing a more unorthodox solution at the end of the day. I can see if anyone has ideas about this setup if you’re still searching for a solution.

      @@DanDulac Yes, it's wonderful. This was my first visit to the Festival, but I've been to the Revival in September twice. The last time I went in my Isetta. 200 miles and it took me 10 hours to get there! I'd recommend it.

    After I messaged you on last video about the HTG, I had a feeling it was a no go. Might as well say goodbye to your money but do hope you get a refund. I’m going to at least give my HTG a chance as I already have it and already hacked my tcu 😢. If it doesn’t work, I’ve been looking at maxxecu as the trans controller for my dq500 and Is able to speak to my m150. I’ve heard that even the cheapest ECU will work. It be my next step if the HTG is a fail and will have to buy another dq500 continental tcu fml

    I suggest that to protect the inside of the fenders you just get wheel well liners from a scrap yard cut a suitable chunk out of them and use polyurethane glue to stick them in or glue in some mounting points if you want them removable. You can set them up to shield the fender vents from rocks while still being functional.
