Maybe leather for the roll bars? I don't think alcantara would hold up very well getting in and out, plus the oils from your hands and clothes. Keep up the great work!
For those side areas where you need to climb over I would recommend a harder flooring type of vinyl or leather like material or a marine or kitchen carpet or some heavy patterned rubber as used in truck beds. Basically you want something that will tolerate abuse as those areas very quickly accumulate scratches stains and other damage. You also want them a bit slippery so as not to grab clothing and skin if someone sits on them to climb in and out.
Great advice as always! I love the look and feel of Alcantara so I'm going to give it a go. But I'm going to make sure to 'section' the covering so I can easily replace just the top bits when/if it gets worn. I was originally going to carpet the top sides for the very reason you mention; but ultimately i want to try something different. 👍
@@DanDulac . There is a kitchen carpet that looks and feels a lot like alcantera, it’s a vinyl with a flock like coating of about 1mm thickness on a 3-4mm backing It usually comes in tiles and has standard flooring style patterns and colours, but if there’s a marine version you might be able to get it in a roll and of one solid colour. I had several old sample books of it that I used to carpet my workshop. I had to move before I wore it out so I don’t know how many years it was going to last but I got about six out of it with little cleaning and plenty of dirt and grease.
Great work Dan. I would just change the position of the battery posts. Positive where you have the negative and vice versa. It's just because that positive looks to be very close to the chassis and it will be very easy to produce some fat sparks when you attach battery jump cables.
Great minds! I was thinking this EXACT thing when I was producing the video. It would be very easy to do some unscheduled chassis welding with the current situ. I’m DEFINITELY going to swap those posts. Thanks for your comment!!!
God I love this project! I appreciate this so much more than the other RUclips builds that get thrown together in 2 weeks and you just know that there's so many problems with them that they're not showing! Dan, you are doing it right! Taking your time and making sure everything is good! Has to be the coolest build on RUclips!
Talk about timing! I'm about to remachine the binnacle for my Haltech IC7 display. Yours turned out great Dan for your Motech. Here's hoping mine will be as impressive!
Always good to see your smiling face. The build is crazy fun. Today I am making an appointment with the Dyno guy. I have never had any success with getting my rig-nuts to expand like yours did.
Dan, I really admire the standard of your work on the car, the thought that you put into the build, and the quality of your videos. Did you consider angling the monitor towards the driver?
I did consider that. But it didn’t make much difference given how small the cockpit space is. Plus sharing the display with the passenger will add to the riding experience. I also considered putting the bezel in front of the driver but it’s nearly completely obstructed by the steering wheel.
I definitely considered carbon skinning. I might make another one so I have options. 🙂. But I ultimately decided on Alcantara due to it's low reflectivity; will minimize windshield reflections on sunny days. Plus it will match the rest of the dash that will be covered in black Alcantara as well.
Awesome work as usual! Getting close to end, keep going!!!💪💪 One thing, think the fixings for the carbon cover plates need to be black, the bright silver just aren’t stealth enough for my liking 😂😂
Great progress Dan! Coming from a guy that subsequently ripped all his sound deadener in his GTM, whenever you get to laying carpet on the floor, use MLV, a decoupler, and sound deadener. Will stop a lot of annoying road noise. Little extra effort (and weight) made my car much more comfortable. I used second skin stuff. Love how the gauge pod came out! Does the motec PDM monitor for low voltage to prevent an over discharge when sitting? I have an In Reserve active battery management system with my infinity box canbus and glad I installed. Not sure if Motec has something similar.
Great advice on the flooring substrate before I lay carpet. I had to lookup MLV as I’ve not heard of it. I’ll definitely look into it! I’ve used dynamat type stuff before but not MLV. The MoTeC has low voltage detection and hoping o don’t have any similar issue. So far so good!
Dan, firstly love the build. It's probably too late but I personally think that the binnacle still sits too high. Using the same mounting points, could you not trial another binnacle with a lower profile thereby lowering the screen further down the dash? Please don't take this as a negative comment, as everything else you've done is fabulous.
Hi Richard--no offense taken! I love feedback as it helps me refine over time. The version-1 pod was definitely too high and too big. I lowered the entire pod and screen ~25mm more for version-2. With the windshield in place and sitting in the drivers position, I considered going even lower before I printed version-2 but then the screen starts to escape my peripheral vision. The 7" screen is certainly big for the small dash real estate of the Ultima. I considered the 5" MoteC display and it would probably be better for the Ultima but I wanted the extra screen for maximum flexibility. But like you said, fairly easy to change down the line if needed. Thanks again for your feedback!
Coming a long and it looks sick! (jmho im not feeling the gauge housing, leaning towards a modern look like wide ipad like type display would look sleek and modern ie mercedes project one or the aston martin valkyrie)
Love this build, been following since the beginning. Not sure how close the brake line is to the steering shaft, as in the video it looks really close especially once you turn the steering wheel. I would hate to see that brake line rub through. Cheers
Not a criticism but wonder if you will revisit the MOTEC display once the car is finished, I have sneak suspicion it might be too high and block your view out inconveniently… guess it woul just mean a new 3D printed pod and drop the display down into the dash a bit more. Looks awesome… wonder what your next project will be to top this this one. 🤔 What about a full carbon replica 6R4 metro by MST in Wales, UK… their Mk1 ‘escorts’ are beautifully made.
With both versions of the pod, I sat in the drivers seat with the windshield in place to test visibility. For sure version-1 was way too big. But for version-2, I lowered the display another ~25mm and it's at a good height, imho. I don't want it too low as I want to see the display somewhat in my peripheral vision. But as you stated, I can always change it later if need be. Great question about my next project...I have a couple ideas but certainly thinking about it!
I think once it's covered in Alcantara and sitting with the rest of the Alcantara dash, it will blend nicely and look smaller. That's my theory anyway...but alas, I can always change it if it doesn't work out to plan. Thanks for the comment!
Dang, I’ve really been watching you build this thing for 2 years?!?!! Looking forward to seeing you enjoy it Dan. Great work as always
It doesn’t seem possible!! 👍
2 years, already? Damn. Well worth it though.

Wonderful
Great Dan! I totally agree with the battery suggestion! Cheers from Italy!

@@anomamos9095 interesting! I’ll do some searching and see what I can find. Thanks again!
Meticulous work Dan !
In my opinion, this is one of the coolest builds on RUclips!
🙏
Coming together nicely Dan!!
Great work! This will be a beast.
I thought you might enjoy the 3D print... 👍
Looking forward to seeing the fabric work!

Nice as always Dan!
I'm always impressed with the quality of work you put into everything 👍
💯🔥🔥🔥💯🔥🔥🔥 ULTIMA EVO
It’s looking good. Nice work on the design of bezel. That alcantera is gonna look nice! Can’t wait til next update.
Cover the binnacle in carbon fibre !

Picked it up from relicate.com. They have a great selection of top quality stuff!

Do you have the mesh file. Looking to make something similar for my car. Be nice to see how you did it.
Sorry for my late reply! Not sure how I missed this. Yes, I’m happy to send you the file. Just email me at supraholic97@gmail.com
Hi Dan would you be willing share the 3d print file for the motec bezel? It looks brilliant and I am doing a similar build.
Sure! Let me know how to reach you and I'm happy to send.

Yeah, it's not that close...it's an optical illusion with the camera angel. Good eye!

Uh! Love the build but this looks like a toaster stuck on the dashboard. Sorry but it is too high and too big IMO.
