This was shown in the mornings during the summer holidays on British TV throughout the 60s & 70s.
When most of our TV was still black & white this seemed so exotic & exciting to us.
Brings back happy memories of childhood - we used to watch it then go outside & play at being vets in Africa.
I was a little disappointed later to find that it was filmed in California not Africa !
I still have a Daktari annual. Loved to watch it as a child.
Wow, memories! I used to watch this show back home in the seventies every Saturday morning as a little boy. What a time of innocence that was. Memories.
"Daktari" and "Cowboy in Africa" were great shows to watch in the '70s. I wish I could see a whole episode, but as often happens with old shows, the magic goes away when viewed 40 years later. Thanks for posting - hadn't heard that theme music since at least '72!
Still love the old episodes but I can understand you
daktari one of the best show ever .
I have just watched a short clip from Dactari.
What a blast from the past.
It brought back fond memorys.
Daktari! From he-man science adventurer Ivan Tors, who also brought us Sea Hunt, Flipper, Gentle Ben, and other exciting, but non-violent, family-friendly good stuff.
This used be on kids' TV in the summer in the UK when I was a small child. It was susually raining ,so there were lots of good TV shows to watch.
Watched this in a different world... long since gone...20th century.
When I was a kid in the 70's it used to air on Uganda Television every Saturday morning. It turned out to be our weekly fix/tranquilizer.
This used to be on in the early 70's here is Australia. Seems the US had a different intro - didn't have the distinctive african music going on. Great memories. I didn't know that Erin Moran was in the show either. Well there you go, you learn something everyday.
Ha I think every toy car I had ,including my pedal car, ended up with zebra stripes on because of this programme great memories thank you.
I was born in 65 - I remember Clerence and Judy! Nice memory on my childhood :D !
I'm another child of '65-great memories and what a theme tune-haunting, menacing, rousing and uplifting all at the same time!
Great nature memories of my childhood !
I definitely remember Paula (Cheryl Miller)
Loved this series and all the animals
I didn't realise that either, how interesting.
She was just a cub back then, as was I!
Now I'm feeling my age a bit!
I was about 8 when this was on. Absolutely loved it. Cried buckets when Clarence the cross-eyed lion died. Would love to see it re-run on TV. So glad nobody remade it and turned it into a junk show......
Yes, whenever the cast ended up in the middle of a pride of lions it was always the same film of lions that you saw. It was just like the same crocodile fight appearing over and over again in the Johnny Weismuller Tarzan films.
Cheryl Miller, my first school boy crush. Cannot believe this is over forty years old.
Loved the character `Headley`, made Terry-Thomas sound German.
Wow, I was so young when this ran. All I can remember is that once every episode a black guy would run out of the jungle and yell " DAKTARIIIIIII..."
Growing up as a kid I saw this and many other animal based shows, like Lassie, Flipper, even Grizzly Adams. They instilled in me a sense of respect and appreciation for animals. Too bad most of today's programs don't do that.
The first TV show I loved....oh what memories! Thanks for putting it on You tube
'Loved this show when I was a kid.. . We watched it every Friday afternoon:-))) ahhh, the memories..
I used to love this show. Didn't know that it was filmed in California..
Clarence the crossed-eyed lion!!!!!
LOVED IT!!!!!!
RIP Erin Moran! This was Erin's first role!
I had a little china figuring or a lion that I named 'Clarence'
I still have it ....40 years later
Great memories
Yes, it's true, Erin Moran and Ron Howard were Starring in TV Shows for CBS during the 1960's prior to Happy Days
Ron did The Andy Griffith Show for 8 Seasons as Opie Taylor and Erin did Daktari for 4 Seasons as Jenny Jones
Also, I use to watch this on Pat Robertson's CBN (now abc family) and Ted Turner's TNT (now The Network for Drama) and plus, this show was on when The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Bonanza, I Dream of Jeannie and The Original Star Trek were on NBC back in the 1960's as well.
There was a kid in my 8th grade class, who, our teacher (Mr. Ellis) nicknamed Clarence, after Clarence the lion in daktari. You my have guessed, he was cross-eyed.
My Earliest Ever T.V Memory And Watched This Every time. Thank You.
日本では密林王国ダクタリという題名で放送されてたんだよ
主題歌と一緒にOPを観ると
行こうクラレンス 行こうジュディー の部分がピッタリなんで
日本版もこのOP映像をそのまま使ってたものと想定されます
This show was a big hit here in Croatia too...
My favorite TV show of all time - still have my "Daktari car" (a blue Landrover matchbox) and a lifelong interest in purchasing a real one - maybe when I retire in a few years. I wish someone would put this series on DVD!
I will always remember "Clarence the cross eyed lion", good times!
I watched every episode of this series as a kid. The music was written, conducted, and produced by Quincy Jones.
This was the coolest show ever!
Love the theme...loved their zebra-camo Landrovers when I was a kid.
There is a UK show now called "Wild At Heart".is not bad...if you liked Daktari, you may also like it.
Thank-you! I remember hearing that on the early EWF records, A great instrument!
I remember this too, but Erin Moran surprised me. I remember her more from "Happy Days".
brilliant! another childhood fave!
I loved this show when I was a kid.
On voyait cette série en France également ! Avec le même générique !
Erin Moran?! From Happy Days?!
GITTOUTTAHEEYAH!
Too FUNNY!
I can't believe I still have this theme song in my head, since now I realize I was only about 6 years old when I watched it.
TOO FUNNY.
THANKS!
Tenhle seriál jsem viděl, když mi bylo asi 10 - 14 let, kolem roku 1976
First intro to Africa music. Ginger Baker also perforned his version of Aiko Kobiaye' one of the cuts from Osibisa's album
I LOVED this show! I lived for Saturday nights when it came on, then it switched to Wed nites! I wanted to be just like Cheryl Miller, my idol!
blimey im 45 , great memories
I LOVED Clarence the crossed-eyed lion. This was on when I was like 5-7.
Great show! And that music just jams!
@ 0:44
clarence the cross-eyed lion ...
XD priceless, made my day.
I was born in 63, so i vaguely remember this, probably from early 70s rerun syndication
I remember this playing in syndication back-to-back with Korg 70,000 BC when I was a kid.
I never even heard about this until now
Music: Osibisa. Was an interesting group in the late 60's. "Criss Cross rythms that explode with happiness". I have (stolen from my older sibling actually ) their first album. If you like this kind of music, you like that.
Shelly Manne, the jazz drumming great, wrote most of the music for it.
Erin Moran yes I didn't know that either. The one that's really changed is Judy "Judy Finnegan"
Great theme music to this show was composed by the celebrated jazz drummer SHELLY MANNE. He scored it, largely, for percussion and flute ---you can hear him playing on the early prototype of Remo Roto Toms. I wish I knew who was playing that vicious balafon part. Just great.
I remember this show from the early 70s, but I did not remember Erin Moran being on the show. This was prior to her being on Happy Days.
I loved this show! I own two of the books ...but I wish it would be released to dvd.
I didn't know Erin Moran(Happy Days)was also in Daktari.
Daktari espisodes should be released on DVD!
Granted on Daktari she was just a little kid and didn't get on Happy Days until later. Nice surprise to see.I think I was more into looking at Hari Rhodes and the animals...I was a teen girl.
I loved Judy and Clarence.
Guess where this was filmed?
California! With stock footage from Africa.
Great show, great message.
0:31 There's no doubt about it, Hedley Mattigley patterned the appearance of District Officer Headley after Field Marshall Montgomery.
Watched this in my childhood lol
I was going to guess Malibu, so thanks for posting.
i remember this show. especially clarence the cross eyed lion! tvland should bring it back, along with please don't eat the dasies and the courtship of eddie's father and room 222.
I haven't seen this show in 40 years but remember Daktari declaring himself as a vegan in one episode and it made an impression on me. Other TV vegans from early 70's period would include Mr Spock and Kwai Chan Caine in Kung Fu.
Most people forget that DAKTARI had been a spin off to Bernhard Grzimek´s Oskar premiered documentary SERENGETI SHALL NOT DIE. Had been a documentation on wild life conservation by the famous German biologist and zoo director. He also had written a several volumnes strong encyclopedia on animals. Many people state that ihis film had raised the conscience of the people world wide. It made the Image of hunters and hunting for itself less fashionable.
I used to love this show
I love this tv serie!
I remember watching the reruns in the 70's
Damn..the last time I saw this was about 30 years ago
I beleive Daktari was on just before Hawaii 5-O on Tuesday nights
this show really deserves a reboot, but, it won't get it
This opening theme absolutely rocked. The first few seconds are missing from this clip, but this song just burned! I wasn't aware that the instrument was called a balafon. I purchased the Shelley Mann CD recently that included songs from Daktari, but the version of the theme was different, much lighter and without the thundering bass heard here. Thanks for posting this. I *wish* there was a way to obtain the original recording of this version of the theme.
This was filmed in California but they used to cut in real filmed sequences from Africa, which made the show seem phony
i just recently started watching this series
I don't remember "Joanie" being in this but I do re,ember Cheryl 'n' Judy!
excelente serie...saudades da minha infancia...BRAZIL...
I USE TO RIDE MY DOG SINGING THE NAME ..LOL
Funny....used to watch this on TV during the Summer in England....way back in the early 70s....turns out it was filmed in SoCal....what are the chances? lol
clarence the lion my favourite
Que hermosa preciosa serie Daktari
meine Jugendzeit! schön!!!!!!
RIP Ross Hagan :(
Minha...nossa infancia...saudade
Yes she did.
I never heard of this series. I also see "Joanie Cunningham" was a little kid at the time.
Holy Joanie Loves Chachi! Erin Moran was in this? Who knew? She's 50 now!!!
Erin Moran? When I mentioned seeing her in a Daktari rerun to my old friend Chas, he replied,"Back when Shortcake was just a Cupcake?"
Oh My god. Just noticed that ERIN MORAN was in this show. never knew that. for you people that the name dont ring a bell with.. she was Joanie Cunningham in the show Happy Days
That's Erin Moran at 7! She played an orphan.
Erin Moran of course went onto greater fame in "Happy Days".
Harri Rhodes played the bad guy who got wasted by Burt Reynolds at the start of the movie "SHARKY'S MACHINE"!
I forgot the name of the thumb instrument, but it sounds great here!
I lost it at Clarence the cross eyed lion.. So Epic!
Still can remember the day when Clarence´s death had been mentioned in out newspaper. Went through the media world wide.
I used to watch this sow as a kid, & I remember the cross-eyed lion more Joanie being on the show! How pitiful...
This final version of the theme songs absolutely rocks. The thundering bass is brilliant. I would love to know who performed this, and if any digital version of it is available. I just love this music.
