This was shown in the mornings during the summer holidays on British TV throughout the 60s & 70s.
When most of our TV was still black & white this seemed so exotic & exciting to us.
Brings back happy memories of childhood - we used to watch it then go outside & play at being vets in Africa.
I was a little disappointed later to find that it was filmed in California not Africa !

"Daktari" and "Cowboy in Africa" were great shows to watch in the '70s. I wish I could see a whole episode, but as often happens with old shows, the magic goes away when viewed 40 years later. Thanks for posting - hadn't heard that theme music since at least '72!

Daktari! From he-man science adventurer Ivan Tors, who also brought us Sea Hunt, Flipper, Gentle Ben, and other exciting, but non-violent, family-friendly good stuff.

This used to be on in the early 70's here is Australia. Seems the US had a different intro - didn't have the distinctive african music going on. Great memories. I didn't know that Erin Moran was in the show either. Well there you go, you learn something everyday.

Yes, whenever the cast ended up in the middle of a pride of lions it was always the same film of lions that you saw. It was just like the same crocodile fight appearing over and over again in the Johnny Weismuller Tarzan films.

Growing up as a kid I saw this and many other animal based shows, like Lassie, Flipper, even Grizzly Adams. They instilled in me a sense of respect and appreciation for animals. Too bad most of today's programs don't do that.

Yes, it's true, Erin Moran and Ron Howard were Starring in TV Shows for CBS during the 1960's prior to Happy Days
Ron did The Andy Griffith Show for 8 Seasons as Opie Taylor and Erin did Daktari for 4 Seasons as Jenny Jones
Also, I use to watch this on Pat Robertson's CBN (now abc family) and Ted Turner's TNT (now The Network for Drama) and plus, this show was on when The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Bonanza, I Dream of Jeannie and The Original Star Trek were on NBC back in the 1960's as well.

Great theme music to this show was composed by the celebrated jazz drummer SHELLY MANNE. He scored it, largely, for percussion and flute ---you can hear him playing on the early prototype of Remo Roto Toms. I wish I knew who was playing that vicious balafon part. Just great.

I haven't seen this show in 40 years but remember Daktari declaring himself as a vegan in one episode and it made an impression on me. Other TV vegans from early 70's period would include Mr Spock and Kwai Chan Caine in Kung Fu.

Most people forget that DAKTARI had been a spin off to Bernhard Grzimek´s Oskar premiered documentary SERENGETI SHALL NOT DIE. Had been a documentation on wild life conservation by the famous German biologist and zoo director. He also had written a several volumnes strong encyclopedia on animals. Many people state that ihis film had raised the conscience of the people world wide. It made the Image of hunters and hunting for itself less fashionable.

This opening theme absolutely rocked. The first few seconds are missing from this clip, but this song just burned! I wasn't aware that the instrument was called a balafon. I purchased the Shelley Mann CD recently that included songs from Daktari, but the version of the theme was different, much lighter and without the thundering bass heard here. Thanks for posting this. I *wish* there was a way to obtain the original recording of this version of the theme.
