  • Daktari (Swahili for "doctor") is an American children's drama series that aired on CBS between 1966 and 1969. The series, an Ivan Tors Films Production in association with MGM Television, stars Marshall Thompson as Dr. Marsh Tracy, a veterinarian at the fictional Wameru Study Centre for Animal Behaviour in East Africa.
The show follows the work of Dr. Tracy, his daughter Paula (Cheryl Miller), and his staff, who frequently protected animals from poachers and local officials. Tracy's pets, a cross-eyed lion named Clarence and a chimpanzee named Judy, were also popular characters.
Daktari was based upon the 1965 film Clarence, the Cross-Eyed Lion, which also stars Thompson as Dr. Tracy and Miller as his daughter. The concept was developed by producer Ivan Tors, inspired by the work of Dr. Antonie Marinus Harthoorn and his wife Sue at their animal orphanage in Nairobi. Dr. Harthoorn was a tireless campaigner for animal rights, and with his research team developed the capture gun, used to sedate animals in order to capture them without injury.

I have never forgotten this show I loved it so much. Clarence was my favourite animal. He and Elsa from Born Free, opened up my deep love of lions. These shows should be mandatory for kids nowadays. Good clean, informative viewing. Wish they'd put them on again, us adults need to reminisce. ❤️❤️❤️

Daktari was filmed at Africa USA. 40 miles outside LA. Was owned by Ralph and Tony Helfer who pioneered the teaching of animals by patience and reward. When Clarence had had enough of filming he just stood up and walked away. The late Yale Summers (Jack Dane) put it best : 'Well, would YOU argue with a 500lb African lion?'

I remember watching Daktari on Saturday nights after dinner. I was allowed to stay up until eight thirty ; it was usually seven thirty pm on school nights at the time. And church in the morning, of course !

My phone ringtone is the 1990s crash bandicoot theme song (I'm 30). When it started ringing while I was visiting my dad (70) he suddenly started saying "DAT CURRY!" After I gave him some weird looks, and Internet searching I found this! This was what he remembered after about 50 years 😂😁

I note, an MGM Production. Now I wonder, when MGM wanted to update their logo, did Clarence audition and he was told by a studio executive that, no matter how well he could growl, because of his cross-eyedness, he couldn't be the new studio logo but there was an opening for him in an new African adventure TV series. His co-star would be a former girlfriend of one of the chimps who immediately preceded Alan B Shepherd, Gus Grissom and John Glenn on their journeys into space.
