The thing is that this is not a "Good vs Evil" kind of show, that's why there's no villain portraing as a final boss, there's just players and teams that have different levels of expertise in the game and showing their own story of how they got to that specific point is how the plot evolves. By doing that the autor tried to show how different people with different personalities and builds approach the game and how they get to success or even fail in some cases. With that said, YES, there's going to be different "side stories" about different teams and/or specific players telling what is their approach to the game and what kind of hardships they had to face. But apart from a couple of characters, most of this side stories are like an episode long, so you dont HAVE to remember every character, just understand their stories. But I assure you, bc of how relatable those are, you'll be wanting to remember a couple of them.
Very well-said!! It's an amazing storytelling how they manage to get us empathize with teams who are just featured for like one-two episode just from those side stories.
Yeah, it's just everyone having healthy competition and working for the dreams they want to achieve. The characters being people, rather than just Side A versus Side B and one side is the bad one.
Yo Victoria! The characters tend to cry a lot because in Japan’s high school leagues, there isn’t a “regular season” it’s just tournament after tournament. The third years cry after loses and get really upset because once they lose, that’s it. They are done. And for a lot of them, they aren’t continuing volleyball after high school. So all of that emotion comes out after their final game
That actually kinda sucks. Imagine facing off against a top school for your first game. You'll pretty much have only 2 official matches a year if you lose both matches.
Also middle school/high school sports are HUGE in Japan. In the US, only a small fraction of students play in varsity sports. But in Japan, about 50% of all middle & high schoolers play at a sports club at school. They take it super seriously, practicing 6-7 days/week and all year round. So when many third years lose in this tournament, they are basically ending their 6-year-long sports career. That's devastating :-(
I remember my last basketball game in high school. We lost in regional semifinals qualifiers. I couldn't hold tears in my eyes when we enden the match. Our captain held it till he went to showers. Devastating feeling. I was crying because it was my last game, it was the end of the basketball road for me and it was soulcrsuhing.
The quote is basically saying, “there’s not chance of winning if you don’t put the effort.” They use the quote in the context of playing a team that’s is out of their league, and the team basically gives up before they start, but saying “you can’t win unless you try” means a game is never decided beforehand no matter how good the opponent, so don’t act like you’ve lost already and give it your all. Hope this helps!
she dosent get it cause thats natural way for her but not for all, I personal give up on things the I even tried yet, when im not sure about something I dude of myself its not right but its the natural way for me
agreed. It's like the motivational phrase "nothing happens until you try" sure it might not have the outcome you desire all the time but what you want will never come if you do nothing.
This episode is actually about Daichi's philosophy and his influence on his ex teammate and the captain of the girls team who were both his childhood friends. Basically giving your best and trying to win even if all the odds seem stand against your team
I know I'm super late to this video but that's it. I feel like Daichi's presence doesn't hit Vic too hard in her memory so she sort of always forgets who he is. lol. He's my favorite so I always get a bit sad when she does that. (Like: "That's Daichi, Vic!" I want to be that haikyuu homie next to her just to represent Daichi. lol)
Bad translations: Nishinoya didn't call his opponents "pieces of shit", he just said somezhing like "dammit" (kind of a bad one, since the subtitles made him seem super rude) When the girl cried after the game, the subtitles said "they went after my serves" (which doesn't rly make any sense), she said something like "they targeted me with their serves" (Makes more sense why she was crying, it was because she messed up a lot of recieves) This one is also from a previous episode They said that in one game asahi's spikes were "ruthlessly blocked" but other translations usually say something like "every single one of his spikes was blocked" (I guess this is a minor error, but to me the second one sounds waaay worse)
Yeah, the main problem with that kind of dialogue is that japanese doesn't have swear words in the same way english does. It all depends on the context and the character, and in this case, something like "damn you guys" could be more fitting.
Totally. When they cuss, the translations are, more often than not, innacurate. We know bc, well, anime knowledge XD and yeah, he said the classic 'kuso!" I think
This episode was the first one that really made me realise that I’d found something special watching Haikyuu. How many shows ever think about how it feels to be the loser at one of these competitions? And so realistically. I don’t play volleyball, but I’m a competitive Irish Dancer, and we have teams as well. And everything they dealt with here I’ve never related to anything more, the giving up before you start, the half-jokingly saying you’ll be at the top someday, the desire to work really hard when you’re at a competition, but losing that drive when the going gets tough at boring old practice, and the regret when the next competition comes, and you didn’t change. That line “we played too” always makes me tear up a bit coz it felt like for the first time the hard work and years of practice I put into dancing was being recognised. Not because I won, but just because I tried. I was never good enough to win, or even place high up. But I was there too. I worked hard too. And someone finally recognised that even though I didn’t have the wins to show for it, I loved my chosen sport just as much as those who won. For every winner, someone has to lose out, and it’s nice that the losers are never completely forgotten about in this show. They are acknowledged for what they gave, even if it wasn’t enough.
For some of them it isn't, though. There are girls calling Michimiya "senpai", which means they're second or first years, so they've got another chance!
Haikyuu has "this thing" to make you want to cheer for all the teams, and make you sad when they lose, even though the focus is on Karasuno, I think that's exactly why the history of the teams are shown in the anime It's one of the things I love most about Haikyuu
It's kind of how she said in an earlier reaction she wished they saw the game from the opponents perspective. Haikyuu does that for most teams. Which is a lot to take in at once but once you understand it. It IS amazing
To answer your question abt the format of the show concerning all the characters backgrounds: yes, we get introduced to so many characters and backstories in future episodes. Don’t worry too much abt it, karasuno stays our main team lol. It just does a lot of cool world building and shows that each character and each team is multidimensional. It also shows the great sportsmanship between a lot of the main characters, so yeah :) Also Deadichi😏
Yeah, a lot of the best episodes in my opinion show how human each character or team truly is, and while it is good to understand these things, I personally think not understanding isn’t a big issue. The comment section can always explain things and if you don’t understand things you can always rewatch these things later on. Haikyuu was one of my first animes and I didn’t fully understand a lot of things, but as you go on in the series it will get easier.
I completely agree with what you said. I love that Haikyuu shows the perspective of characters from other teams and their backstory. I like how you can see what other characters are thinking and the reasons on why they're standing on the court. I'm happy that I get to see the points of view of a variety of characters- even if it's just for a few seconds a time.
This is definitely one of my favorite parts of HQ. I love how they put just enough backstory in for the opposing team/players to almost make you root for them. I think that is what makes the show feels so real. Every team puts in practice time with the intent of winning or trying to win, so to only see the effort Karasuno puts in would, I think, make the show fall flat.
About the question "Do we learn about all the teams?" Yes we do learn about the teams it does get kind of confusing since some teams are shown for a specific reason and are more temporary like in this episode with the team Karasuno faced was more like a just this episode or lesson type of things like for this one i feel was to show that lesson of never give up or like the quote you asked about was saying something more along the lines of "We can't win unless we don't believe in ourselves" however there are some teams that are more played up and you'll learn of more about them before their official match with Karasuno even begins. Hope this helped! Keep up the amazing work!
Last episode: "whats Victoria thinking about?" rant (that she thought was weird) where she talks about how it'd be neat if there was a series that was told from the opposing team's side. *LITERALLY Episode 16:*
Lol next seasons episode 16 is gonna be a doozy for vic after she said that thing in passing this episode- (Also if this counts as spoilerish I will take it down please don't get mad guys-)
Will she remember who "he" is by that point? I feel like she always forgets him. lol Ikagijiri only talked to "him" in this episode and in the last, they showed "him" on the same team but my girl still wasn't sure it was "him". LOL
@@haibyh311_9 **sigh** There's always gotta have someone like you, who sees everyone avoiding spoiling the name of a character, then comes and just reveals the name of the character for no reason.
Hey Victoria! The better translation, which you can find on Crunchyroll (I think the Netflix subs drop the ball because they can't just copy Crunchyroll's better translation for copyright reasons), is "You can't win unless you believe you can" instead of "You can't win unless you try". These kinds of errors range from making lines a little bit more awkward (like this one) to outright changing what characters are saying. EDIT: A great example of changing what was said completely: When one of the girls is crying after their loss she says "They went after my serves" which is completely wrong. What she says here is that they TARGETED her with their serves. She wasn't messing up her serve and giving over points, the opponent was targeting her on serves because her receives were bad.
Yes I completely agree what I really think is that Netflix is taking more direct translations and dropping the ball on the meaning and such I honestly would let her use my account haha but I don’t expect her to buy a new subscription or something like that I just love that she’s even trying to make sense of the sub it’s not super easy at first we appreciate and love her so much
Wow, I had no clue sentences in a show can be copyrighted. I always thought they just had not as good translators who didn't know the language as well. The more you know :)
Great comment man. Just wanted to add to the "changing what characters say." Noya saying "You pieces of shit!" Really threw me off. Noya is rough around the edges but he isn't a jerk like this translation can make him out to be. Crunchyroll all day!
@@Crystantemum yeah a lot of their personalities kinda of change actually the swearing as a whole throws me like yeah they swear but the amount of it and the actual words said change a little drastically. And the whole upperclassmen things just makes me want to die like I get it I do but it’s like no like (excuse me for using this as an example to explain but seriously) what would you translate shawty to it’s slang which is different but senpai has a meaning of respect and is much more ingrained in the culture so while it is a term that translates to upperclassmen it has a bit more meaning than that and sounds really weird when translated I English the way they do because in American you’d never hear someone going around calling someone upperclassmen John it’s like an honorific rather than just a noun
I hate how the Netflix subs directly translate senpai. Like yeah it's technically correct that they say upperclassmen Daichi but it's really awkward and stilted in English.
part of the reason why Haikyuu is one of the best and most popular sports anime is because of how close to reality the show is. there are no superpowers here... no overly dramatic storyline. just highschool boys and their journey on achieving a dream to play the longest on the court. you can relate to the characters of the main team, both players and support staff. you can relate to every team they play against. there is no one true villain to hate. that bitter-sweet feeling every time our boys from karasuno wins, but your heart breaks because the other team has to face defeat. haikyuu is more than just an amazing show... it is a masterpiece
Yep, and remember when he told Reiner that he'll keep moving forward 'till he kills all his enemies? That line gave me chills how he pretended to be sympathetic and told Reiner that he was just like him and then dropped that bomb.
18:55 The thing is, That game is the last game for the 3rd years who would quit volleyball after highschool that's why they are so affected.... since they won't be able to play anymore.. So they can't really "Try to do better" on their next game because there won't be any for them..
I love episode 16 because it gives quiet dignity to the teams that lost. That feeling of hard-fought defeat is so devastating. And it always feels fresh in your mind when you dare to think back on that game.
This show really shows you the other teams, I have definitley cried after seeing Karasuno win, because another team I really like lost. Most fans know every main team, (there are like 6 or 7) and even more after that so yeah, you will get a lot of knowledge from this show about more than just Karasuno
*spoiler* yup. i cried when aoba johsai lost in season two, cause theyre my favorite team. even though i was very happy that karasuno won it was still heart breaking to see aoba johsai lose.
idk if anyone’s posted anything like this yet, but here are the full names + numbers of the Karasuno roster, as well as which name they’re referred to the most, if that helps! I’ll be listing these with their last names first, as it’s done in Japan. 1: Sawamura Daichi (so his first name is Daichi). The others most often call him Daichi or Daichi-san, but iirc Kageyama formally refers to him as “Sawamura-san”, and Ukai and Takeda call him Sawamura/Sawamura-kun. (Ukai and Takeda also refer to the rest of the team by their last names). 2: Sugawara Koushi. Often referred to as Suga/Suga-san. 3: Azumane Asahi. Most often called Asahi/Asahi-san, which is his first name. He and Daichi are the ones referred to by their first names the most, iirc. 4: Nishinoya Yuu. Sometimes nicknamed Noya. He and Tanaka like being called “senpai” (upperclassman) by the first years, though I think it’s mostly only Hinata who calls them senpai lol. 5: Tanaka Ryuunosuke. Usually called Tanaka, but Noya calls him “Ryuu”. 6: Ennoshita Chikara. Usually called Ennoshita; Noya calls him “Chikara”. (Noya refers to all the second years by their first names). 7: Kinoshita Hisashi. Referred to as Kinoshita, but Noya calls him Hisashi. 8: Narita Kazuhito. Referred to as Narita, but again, Noya calls him Kazuhito. 9: Kageyama Tobio. Everyone calls him Kageyama, but there will be one character in later episodes who often calls him by his first name Tobio. 10: Hinata Shouyou. Most people call him Hinata, Noya tends to call him Shouyou. 11: Tsukishima Kei. Most people call him Tsukishima, Yamaguchi is the only one (so far) to call him Tsukki. 12: Yamaguchi Tadashi. Everyone calls him Yamaguchi, but you’ll notice that Shimada, the guy teaching him jump float serves, calls him Tadashi. Also: Shimizu Kiyoko, the manager. Most of the team refers to her as Shimizu/Shimizu-san, but Nishinoya and Tanaka call her by her first name, Kiyoko (usually they say Kiyoko-san). As a general rule of thumb: Ukai and Takeda call everyone on the team by their last names. The team call Asahi and Daichi by their first names, except for Kageyama who is very Polite and calls them Azumane-san and Sawamura-san, lol. Hope that helps a bit!
in haikyuu, you learn part of the backstory of at least on player on almost every opposing team. by building up the rival team it gets you more emotionally involved in the show. like, you want to root for karasuno because they are the main team, but then you get other back stories that make you sympathize with the other teams. this is why so many haikyuu fans don’t have karasuno as their favorite team. the writing of it makes it so there will be points where not everyone is entirely rooting for karasuno, and in my eyes, that’s part of what makes the show so brilliant.
Wow, you look forward to going to school? That takes up most of the day and having mixed martial art classes sounds hard, painful, but worth it. I really don't know why you're saying only.
The main team of this whole show is Karasuno but there are a lot of teams who are going to play a big role to their growth which they will be introduced later on, especially on season 2. I just want to say that you're going to love most teams in the future once you learn about them!! What I really love about this show is that not only it focuses on Karasuno, they will also show the other teams' backstories and such so I (idk about the other haikyuu homies) really love the teams equally.
I just love the representation in this episode. “If this were a work of fiction, the main characters would go to Nationals and we would be extras. But still... we got to play volleyball.”
I see there are many comments below that are explaining the quotes, but to give it more context, that quote was meant to portray Daichi captain's mentality "how you shouldn't act like you've lost before the game". That's what he said to Ikejiri (the wing spiker in Karasuno opposing team) and Michimiya (female team captain). This is the first Haikyu episode that makes me cry of the whole series. I think it's just so inspiring to highlight those who love playing sports in high school and wants to keep playing, but unable to because one or many reasons. Losing and regretting your last game, not knowing when you're gonna be able to play it in the future.
Can I just say, I LOVE watching your reactions. I would love to be able to watch Haikyuu again with no memory and experience the same joy and excitement I felt when I watched it the first time, but since I can't do that, watching you watch it is so satisfying. Thank you so much!
by the looks of the subtitles, you're probably watching it on Netflix. I've always thought the translations are a little weird on there. I highly recommend watching it on Crunchyroll, they have all the seasons, and the OVA's (which are like movies, some are recaps some have new content later down the line in seasons.) plus the translations are a better in my opinion. ps. things like tiny giant= little giant and uperclassmen= sempai. and there are some other ones that i just cant remember rn
Yeah cuz every time the subs said "you can't win if you don't try" the Japanese Dub says "tatakai" (戦い) which means "fight" in English, so from my understanding, the audio is saying "To win you have to fight" but the subs just say "You can't win if you don't try"
@@fargonotic its cuz the subs are done professionally. Netflixs subtitles cut corners and try to make it as simple as possible, and as a result, their subs are littered with mistakes. Also the selection is the best around without going onto illegal websites.
They have already established that the dude in the opposing side is Daichi's old teammate last episode. They even talked before the game. Also, the teams that Karasuno are facing have their own story. We get to see that. It's not all volleyball here, we get to experience how they are like that or how they developed their techniques or even their perspectives on what's happening on and off the court. We don't just root for Karasuno here and root for failure for our opponents, we root for everyone's success and to do their best.
5:25 no lol, that's Daichi, it's actually surprising you dont recognize Daichi in that flashback, specially since they explained they were friends in the previous episode but I can see it how you can miss it as a new anime watcher, 19:50 also yeah, Haikyuu is a show that doesn't just focus the story on the main characters but on the rivals too, to the point that you even cheer for the other teams and not just Karasuno, it's what makes it a great show. It will become easier to keep up, as you go. Karasuno is going to be the main focus still for sure, since this show is about their story, but the other teams, even minor character won't just be ''nobodies''
Karasuno is the main team yes, but a lot of the opposing players/teams are expanded on in a “character of the day” format, where we learn a little or a lot about a character/team depending on how important they are in Karasuno’s journey. PS - Date Tech is pronounced “Dah-teh” Hope this helps! 😇
I noticed that since last episode. I think it's cute she pronounced it "date" though. Maybe students from that school are relationship experts and are very good at dating!
Um.... what about the one who "died" & everyone was freaking out but it ended up just being bad advertisement. XD ruclips.net/video/dJgKn34adGM/видео.html
20:52 We're meeting a lot of teams... Some of it are like the one Karasuno just played with and some of it are like Nekoma, Fukurodani etc that will play important roles in Shoyo's imporovement..
The reason why Kageyama doesn't get a lot of shine like the others is because he's considered a monster who can do everything. That's why when he does something the focus shifts to everyone's reactions
One of the things a lot of Americans don't realize about Japanese high school sports is that they don't play any form of season. You have National qualifiers, Nationals if you get there, and friendly games, and if you're from an especially rural area you don't even get those. You get two chances to qualify in high school volleyball, the summer and the winter tournaments. Your entire season can be two games losing in the first round of both. This has always been one of my favorite episodes of the series because we never think about the teams that lose and have to go home in a show. The focus is always purely on our main cast and their quest to the top. The show in general does such a good job of building a whole list of teams that you hate that you love and that you love to hate, all while you cheer on Karasuno. BTW Victoria, the other teams can be looked at kind of as recurring characters. If you want to remember who everyone is on every single team that's your prerogative, but you don't lose anything by just remembering the important names and even just faces. They're excellent at acting as foils in the moment for each match while giving you interesting stories and a richer experience overall, but you don't really need to know everyone's name.
I actually love the most about the show how uplifting it is. It is truly so inspiring. I am an actress and not at all a volleyball player but there are actually so many parallels between team sports and acting. And I feel like I really learned a lot, or at least reminded myself of a lot, through watching the show. Especially when it comes to working hard and handeling failure. I actually sit there pretty often and say quotes of the show to myself or think of the characters when I am struggeling. I really wish I would have known it earlier, I think it would have helped my mentality so much.
Yeah for many of them it's the end of their days of playing the sport. If they can't perform well in tournaments then they likely won't have much of a chance to play it in college.
It does literally translate to "If you don't try to win, you can't win." I think because the other team probably went into that tournament thinking they were going to lose anyways.
It would make a little more sense being “if you don’t try your best/give it your all, you can’t win” or something Straight up translations don’t always work
This is probably my favorite ep of season 1. I love the concept of focusing on the emotions of the players who lose in round 1 of the tournament. How does it affect you when you are playing the last tournament of your high school career and you immediately get knocked out?
Most teams have backstories to some of the characters, a lot of them can be emotional to get you attached to the characters and show what they’ve been through to get to this point. It basically makes their character more human and shows their struggles and past or the reason why they are the way they are etc. Some are adorable 🥺
This episode is So underrated in my opinion. Love the way we get to see it from the losing side point of view. I think everyone who play sports knows that feeling of regret after a lose. Especially in a tournament elimination set up! The message of this show is so good!!
I was looking for the 1 hour episode but still loving your reactions videos, hope you can keep enjoying this serie, i feel like I'm watching it with a friend who knows everything about volleyball
There will be backstory about most of the teams introduced, and it’s perfectly ok if you aren’t paying too much attention on Ikejiri’s story since he is more of a background character, but be prepared for a TON of backstories in the future
one of reasons why haikyuu is one of the best sports anime is that it doesn't only focuses on the character development of the protagonist or their team but also it shows the backstory of the other teams or players or the experiences that they really get whether on court or not. every character or teams has their own storyline which makes the show great Fun Fact: the author of haikyuu, Furudate was a middle blocker in high school therefor there are moments that really shows the experiences of the players that sympathizes well with the audience.
Hey Victoria, Haikyuu does a great job of developing backstories for most characters that are introduced. Not all of them will play a pivotal role but they are referenced here and there as certain characters' motivation or small reasons like that. Karasuno will always be the main team, but the show does a great job at making you care about the other teams too in fact many fans are obsessed with teams that aren't Karasuno as well. Don't worry too much about it, the story-writing is great and you'll automatically be interested in the teams that are important without having to put in too much work.
We do get a lot of backstories for the different teams and characters. We as a Fandom like to say that "there's no such thing as a bad guy or team in haikyuu, only the love of the game" Furadate (the creator) wrote haikyuu this way because it's a story of friendship, teamwork and a love for a sport that he played. For most of us it's hard to pick a favorite team because of the backstories and development that we get. Although we always root for Karasuno to win, we can't help but feel sad for the other teams that lose. You will honestly want everyone to win as the show moves along and you get a deeper understanding of the show. Also regarding the girls teams and daichi's old classmate the majority of them are 3rd years (seniors) so after this tournament arc most of them will "retire" from the club to focus on studies for college exams and will no longer play with their teams. That's why daichi, suga and Asahi work so hard. They want to "stay on the court the longest" and make it to nationals before graduation
The male player we were following for this episode was Daichi's teammate in middle school. All the flashbacks were his memories of Daichi back in middle school and his impression of him as a player. I don't know the system for Japanese high school volleyball, but for Haikyuu, high school volleyball is made up of only 2 preliminary single elimination tournaments that lead up to their respective national tournament. There is no season for them, so each loss weighs more as it means you're basically out until the next tournament. Since the 2nd of the 2 annual tournaments happens in the latter half of the school year, most seniors will choose to retire from the team in order to focus on their studies. This is why everyone seems really sad. For the seniors, a loss here most likely means that their volleyball career has ended, and the younger members are sad for them since they feel that their seniors could've kept playing if they had played better/tried harder.
Emily be like: the homies are getting only one Ep, better make this edit Absolute FIRE Also the yawning thing is 100% true, even though it's usually more sighing than yawning. The inner and smaller parts of the lungs, the alveoli, are basically tiny wet sacks where gas exchange happen. They can often collapse since their walls are covered with fluid so when It happens to enough of them your brain triggers a yawn or a sigh to pop them back open. It's absolutely normal, most of the time it happens without really being noticeble
20:10 Yes, It's part of Haikyuu, we get to learn different types of players in different teams and how they play and some of their back stories. Basically in Haikyuu, any team can be the protagonist team... Sometimes, even though we know Karasuno is the protagonist team on the show, we still chear for other teams regardless of the result... You just can't cheer for one 😌😌 since some of the members in other teams will play a role in the future... (I don't even know if I'm making any sense, english is not my 1st language 😂)
New subscriber here. This series is honestly the best thing abt Wednesday (I'm in Asia). I'm so happy for starting breakfast and having this series on play while I'm eating. Best moment of my life
"you can't win unless you believe you can" is how I heard someone translate the intention behind that line! and yea, the show is always showing the backstories of the opposing teams while karasuno is playing them (even tho karasuno stays our main team) so sometimes even if karasuno wins it's kind of bittersweet. You don't have to remember the backstories of every one of these teams, though (only a few, like nekoma, but they'll have more screen time for you to remember). The backstory thing is just to add depth to the other team so we don't see it as a one dimensional 'enemy'. love your video like always!
Even the characters' relationship between their teammates and their opposing teams are really good. Each of them is different. Iwaizumi and Oikawa. Bokuto and Akaashi.
I just wanted to say that I've watched several reactions from Haikyuu! and yours is the best one. Not only your reactions are genuine, but you also add value to it by sharing your knowledge in volleyball which is awesome. Keep it up! Can't wait till next week :)
20:12 yes kurasuno is always going to be our main team but when they play against other teams the show will show a little on the players back ground story just to get an idea of why that specific person plays. If you don’t really get the background stories it’s okay it won’t really affect your understanding for future episodes.
Hey Victoria! So Haikyuu basically does go over every team and they do it in such a way to make you remember then for something and make every character in the show important or have value. This is the way I see it but idk how others do. You still stay with Karasuno but there are episodes where they focus on the opponents/other characters and make you feel connected to all of them.
For me it's fanfiction. I find good fanfiction and I'm like "sleep can wait" in school days so I understand you. They say to get your priorities straight and we have them straight because first it's what brings us joy and the rest is afterwards, haha or at least that's what I like to believe.
I think what I love about Haikyuu is that every team Karasuno plays they're treated also like the main characters or storyline for that game. So even though like Date Tech, Aoba Josai, Nekoma are like among the more prominent teams that they go against each team they play is a significant part of their growth and although you're rooting for Karasuno to win you get to see how much the other team wants to win also and you really feel for them. No team is like treated as a "villain" team.

jousting advice: aim to the head, the other knight won't stand up after that
About the teams: yes. One of the great things about this anime is that we get to know a lot about other teams and their players. Like in real life everyone wants to win but someone will always lose. There will be teams like in this episode where we don't learn that much about them and other teams where we will have a deep background for certain characters. I don't read the manga but as I'm aware the manga continues after the highschool days so we will probably see some people never play volleyball again and other players joining teams and start playing professionaly. That would mean we will get new teams with character playing together who are now opponents :)
Yo wtf, i said this in another video but VICTORIA IS SO GOOD WITH HER PREDICTIONS. Sis is making it SO HARD not to spoil but i would never bc i want her to fully experience the joy of watching haikyuu.
i was hooked on to haikyu because i thought how awesome is that author who thought abt this (from loser's perspective)..i have never seen this depth of perspective from the extra's/loser's side in any other animes ...im glad..that there are people who share the same exact thoughts as similar to mine while i was watching this episode. I cherished each and every (last) moments of this episode... cried and smiled..one of the best feel. "we played/tried too"..would never forget episode 16 of haikyu season 1...
meeting a lot of characters is part of the haikyuu experience, imo that is one of the highlights of the show, the fact that we get to know what motivates everyone is so awesome
NOYA STYLE DEFENCE VIDEO!!!! This is one of the more inspirational episodes of Haikyuu, and I love that you get to see all sides of a tournament, how everyone reacts and how everyone feels. For a lot of them it's their last game in highschool, and probably ever. Maybe they will get to play casually sometimes, but losing here has a kind of finality they have to deal with. About the teams, some of the teams introduced will have a more central role, but not all of them. There will be callbacks to some characters that you only see in one episode, and if you don't remember just ask. It's understandable to forget characters when there are so many of them. It took me a couple of watches to remember all of the characters and the teams, and I still struggle sometimes.
🚨 ALL HAIYKYUU REACTIONS ARE ON NOW ON MY NEW CHANNEL ruclips.net/channel/UCdh_bISxNYsxVlj5h673Ayw 🎉SUBSCRIBE 🎉
Exactly!
Very well-said!! It's an amazing storytelling how they manage to get us empathize with teams who are just featured for like one-two episode just from those side stories.
YOU TOOK THE WORDS RIGHT OUT OF MY MOUTH

You'll pretty much have only 2 official matches a year if you lose both matches.
boost- But yeah, the Volleyball, or sports in general, system is different in Japan
That's devastating :-(
You're right. from japan.
あなたの説明は完璧です。私は驚きました。
I remember my last basketball game in high school. We lost in regional semifinals qualifiers. I couldn't hold tears in my eyes when we enden the match. Our captain held it till he went to showers. Devastating feeling. I was crying because it was my last game, it was the end of the basketball road for me and it was soulcrsuhing.
Hinata looking back at Ikejiri is like Hinata looking back at himself when he was in junior high and lost at the first match

(Like: "That's Daichi, Vic!" I want to be that haikyuu homie next to her just to represent Daichi. lol)
Bad translations:
Nishinoya didn't call his opponents "pieces of shit", he just said somezhing like "dammit" (kind of a bad one, since the subtitles made him seem super rude)
When the girl cried after the game, the subtitles said "they went after my serves" (which doesn't rly make any sense), she said something like "they targeted me with their serves"
(Makes more sense why she was crying, it was because she messed up a lot of recieves)
This one is also from a previous episode
They said that in one game asahi's spikes were "ruthlessly blocked" but other translations usually say something like "every single one of his spikes was blocked" (I guess this is a minor error, but to me the second one sounds waaay worse)
Also, I feel like Noya's "You pieces of shit" line isn't quite accurate for the character.
It's more like just "Damn it!"
yes. this translation makes it sound like he's insulting the other team
exactly!
I think it’s “kuso gaki” which means you goddamn brats. He only said kuso ga- tho

when you said “i feel like the characters are real😭” that was literally one of the most relatable things i’ve heard
This🥺🥺
One of my fave episodes in the series, also the music in the monologue scene is just beautiful
Listening to Victoria talk about how the girls should focus on how to do better next time knowing this is their last ever game like:
👁 👄 👁
For some of them it isn't, though. There are girls calling Michimiya "senpai", which means they're second or first years, so they've got another chance!
Haikyuu has "this thing" to make you want to cheer for all the teams, and make you sad when they lose, even though the focus is on Karasuno, I think that's exactly why the history of the teams are shown in the anime
It's one of the things I love most about Haikyuu
My thoughts exactly
It’s all to set up for the final game in the manga
Theres a character design to make it look like one person is cheering for every team and i feel like that character design is every haikyuu fan-
@@xenanabanana omg I know what you're talking about, and I totally agree.
It's kind of how she said in an earlier reaction she wished they saw the game from the opponents perspective. Haikyuu does that for most teams. Which is a lot to take in at once but once you understand it. It IS amazing
"And then the other team that has that.....dreamy setter"
If you didn't know who she was talking about you are not qualified as a true Haikyuu fan
It also shows the great sportsmanship between a lot of the main characters, so yeah :)
Also Deadichi😏
Bro, no. You is gonna make me cry ;v;

Just wanted to add to the "changing what characters say."
Noya saying "You pieces of shit!" Really threw me off.
Like yeah it's technically correct that they say upperclassmen Daichi but it's really awkward and stilted in English.
part of the reason why Haikyuu is one of the best and most popular sports anime is because of how close to reality the show is. there are no superpowers here... no overly dramatic storyline.
just highschool boys and their journey on achieving a dream to play the longest on the court.
you can relate to the characters of the main team, both players and support staff.
you can relate to every team they play against.

yup. i cried when aoba johsai lost in season two, cause theyre my favorite team. even though i was very happy that karasuno won it was still heart breaking to see aoba johsai lose.
idk if anyone’s posted anything like this yet, but here are the full names + numbers of the Karasuno roster, as well as which name they’re referred to the most, if that helps!
“If a player were to get injured” GIRLLLL 😭😭😭😭

I just want to say that you're going to love most teams in the future once you learn about them!! What I really love about this show is that not only it focuses on Karasuno, they will also show the other teams' backstories and such so I (idk about the other haikyuu homies) really love the teams equally.
Yes, the backstory at the beginning was Daichi and his old teammate.
"They went after my serves"

The serves are aimed at her so that makes it wrong already 😂
The quote is basically “if we don’t believe we can win ,We can’t win”
Can I just say, I LOVE watching your reactions. I would love to be able to watch Haikyuu again with no memory and experience the same joy and excitement I felt when I watched it the first time, but since I can't do that, watching you watch it is so satisfying. Thank you so much!
by the looks of the subtitles, you're probably watching it on Netflix. I've always thought the translations are a little weird on there. I highly recommend watching it on Crunchyroll, they have all the seasons, and the OVA's (which are like movies, some are recaps some have new content later down the line in seasons.) plus the translations are a better in my opinion.
ps. things like tiny giant= little giant and uperclassmen= sempai. and there are some other ones that i just cant remember rn
yeah some of the translations are weird
Yeah cuz every time the subs said "you can't win if you don't try" the Japanese Dub says "tatakai" (戦い) which means "fight" in English, so from my understanding, the audio is saying "To win you have to fight" but the subs just say "You can't win if you don't try"
I don't understand this obsession with Crunchyroll, their player is ass and you're bombarded with adds if you don't pay for their premium service

5:25 no lol, that's Daichi, it's actually surprising you dont recognize Daichi in that flashback, specially since they explained they were friends in the previous episode but I can see it how you can miss it as a new anime watcher,
19:50 also yeah, Haikyuu is a show that doesn't just focus the story on the main characters but on the rivals too, to the point that you even cheer for the other teams and not just Karasuno, it's what makes it a great show. It will become easier to keep up, as you go.
Karasuno is going to be the main focus still for sure, since this show is about their story, but the other teams, even minor character won't just be ''nobodies''
Yeah, Ikejiri is Daichi's friend from middleschool. Thats why he was so familiar with daichi and came up to him after the game
Victoria: 'ask yourself what did I learn? What can I do better?'

Karasuno is the main team yes, but a lot of the opposing players/teams are expanded on in a “character of the day” format, where we learn a little or a lot about a character/team depending on how important they are in Karasuno’s journey.

When u realize it’s not 2 episodes but 1😔
Well at least we have a video to watch then none
@@kamxchii9019 lmao u right I’ve been refreshing since 4 lmao
It’s all good.
Hopefully, the editor is back for eps 17 + 18 together.

The reason a lot of them were upset in losing the tournament because “technically “ it would be considered their last volleyball game in highschool
yeah, many of these students won't be able to continue playing volleyball after highschool because they didn't preform well in the tournaments.
Yeah for many of them it's the end of their days of playing the sport. If they can't perform well in tournaments then they likely won't have much of a chance to play it in college.
Go Go Lets Go Lets Go DATEKO!!!
GO GO LETS GO LETS GO DATEKO!!!
GOGO LETSGOLETSGO DATEKOOOO!!!
*start twerking this masterpiece*
It does literally translate to "If you don't try to win, you can't win." I think because the other team probably went into that tournament thinking they were going to lose anyways.
Yup
It would make a little more sense being “if you don’t try your best/give it your all, you can’t win” or something
Straight up translations don’t always work
This is probably my favorite ep of season 1. I love the concept of focusing on the emotions of the players who lose in round 1 of the tournament. How does it affect you when you are playing the last tournament of your high school career and you immediately get knocked out?
"If a player were to get injured." *stares off into the distance in Season 2*
Oh same 😂
XD
Be careful not to spoil to much for her.
Honestly, I had though, "Cries in season two" when she said that tho
Ironically, the same episode...
Fly High, character I shall not name for the sake of spoilers-🕊(lol no one dies)
@@freshcupofangst yup, no one dies 😌
There will be backstory about most of the teams introduced, and it’s perfectly ok if you aren’t paying too much attention on Ikejiri’s story since he is more of a background character, but be prepared for a TON of backstories in the future
one of reasons why haikyuu is one of the best sports anime is that it doesn't only focuses on the character development of the protagonist or their team but also it shows the backstory of the other teams or players or the experiences that they really get whether on court or not. every character or teams has their own storyline which makes the show great
Fun Fact:
the author of haikyuu, Furudate was a middle blocker in high school therefor there are moments that really shows the experiences of the players that sympathizes well with the audience.

⚠️SPOILER ALERT⚠️
Hinata is going to have fever and Karasuno will lose the game without Shoyo.
Episode 16 is truly one of the most important episodes, and perhaps one of the most emotional.
20:15 well yes girl. It's basically part of the series because haikyuushow different perspectives from different teams as well
Hey Victoria, Haikyuu does a great job of developing backstories for most characters that are introduced.
We as a Fandom like to say that "there's no such thing as a bad guy or team in haikyuu, only the love of the game"
Furadate (the creator) wrote haikyuu this way because it's a story of friendship, teamwork and a love for a sport that he played.
Emily be like: the homies are getting only one Ep, better make this edit Absolute FIRE
Also the yawning thing is 100% true, even though it's usually more sighing than yawning.
HAHA so true! I'll tell her you said so :)
"it's a sad wiggle"
so true, I've done a few of those too while watching this show
20:10 Yes, It's part of Haikyuu, we get to learn different types of players in different teams and how they play and some of their back stories.
When you decide Victoria's video is more important than sleep and sacrifice your morning classes
I feel you
same here
For me it's fanfiction.
No team is like treated as a "villain" team.
jousting advice: aim to the head, the other knight won't stand up after that
And if you lose, don't take it out on your horse.
I love this advice
About the teams: yes. One of the great things about this anime is that we get to know a lot about other teams and their players. Like in real life everyone wants to win but someone will always lose.
There will be teams like in this episode where we don't learn that much about them and other teams where we will have a deep background for certain characters.
I don't read the manga but as I'm aware the manga continues after the highschool days so we will probably see some people never play volleyball again and other players joining teams and start playing professionaly. That would mean we will get new teams with character playing together who are now opponents :)
Just finished a midterm only to be rewarded with a new reaction! Blessed
Edit: also sawamura = Daichi (so yes it is daichi’s old teammate)
lets like this comment so she sees it

meeting a lot of characters is part of the haikyuu experience, imo that is one of the highlights of the show, the fact that we get to know what motivates everyone is so awesome
Can we talk about that epic edit with victorias face in the anime? I just... I literally died hahahahaha 😂😂😂
It took me a couple of watches to remember all of the characters and the teams, and I still struggle sometimes.
when your impressed by the serve from kageyama, just wait for the crazy serve of oikawa
Yes that demonic serve from season 2 where Oikawa goes pufferfish cheeks. That serve is powerful.
