But really, Oikawa is one of the most relatable character in Haikyuu... That feeling when you know people who are "geniuses" like Kageyama, you have to work extremely extra hard even to the point of injury just to be good at it in hopes that you can bring your team to the nationals but......... He's a character that shows that there are limits on what an average person can do depite giving it your all. He may seem extremely care free but I think that he's just trying to make his team comfortable with him.

Not sure if someone else commented this, but I just wanted to clarify that in Kageyama's name, Kageyama Tobio, "Kageyama" is actually his last name, even though it comes first, and "Tobio" is his first (or given) name. This is the way it is with Japanese and some other Asian cultures. Another example would be "Hinata Shoyo". "Hinata" is his last name, and "Shoyo" is his first. Another small thing is that the reason why everyone calls them by their last name is that it's part of the culture. Unless you're close to the person or using a nickname (like "Tobio-chan"), you would address them by their last name because it's formal and polite (also with added honorifics going with the culture like "-san" or "-senpai").
(I'm not an expert on this so if anyone wants to correct me, feel free.)

it should be noted that kageyama probably never gave oikawa permission to call him "tobio", but oikawa goes out of his way to use it to be condescending, especially when he calls him "tobio-chan" ("-chan" being a suffix used when you're friendly with a woman or for a *small* child).

Oikawa just basically says fak them, we will show them how good you are, with me you'll get to even greater heights both jump wise and overall play wise. Personally the reason I never disliked Oikawa was because despite him coming off cocky, he's not really all that cocky considering he's the best all around player in the prefecture. I think it's mostly down to his personality and enjoying the spotlight. He never blames his team despite being much better than them, and he works harder than anyone. He's completely willing to admit Kageyamas tosses are better than his, but he's also realistic in saying he's still better overall. I just couldn't dislike the guy. Also it's nice seeing the 'villain' if you can call him that be the hard working player as opposed to the 'genius'. I feel like it's often the opposite, where hard work beats natural talent but in this case we're rooting for Kageyama(natural talent) to beat someone who works harder than anyone. Really interesting way to do it. (also on a side note, the subtitles you're using aren't helping him at all, he's not as cocky and rude in japanese)

Oikawa isn’t the best player in the prefecture, that’s just not true. He is better than Kageyama as a player but he isn’t the best. And you can’t measure if someone works harder than others in this case because everyone has different limits to their strengths and what they can do to improve. I find it weird the way people look at Oikawa and Kageyama’s rivalry. I don’t think it’s “hard work” vs “genius”, I think it’s “hard work” vs “hard work”. Believing that someone just has “natural” talent is weird, mainly because it’s not true. Tobio worked hard too to get to where he is, he didn’t just pick up a volleyball and was magically a good setter. Everyone worked hard to get to where they are and I feel like saying someone is a “natural” genius is discrediting someone else’s hard work. *Everyone* put their sweat and tears into improving. Nobody was just born a superior player.

It gives me chills every single time. And the episode after this one is one of my favorites of the entire series, I literally just call it Suga's episode. Love him so much.

i promise there is way more to oikawa than his looks and being “dreamy”! he does give off that vibe but deep down he has his own insecurities and can be very relatable to many people :) of course there’s others who don’t really understand his backstory and all the pressure & emotions he’s feeling, just because he doesn’t really show it. but if you pay more attention to his character he’s very interesting and honestly deserves better.

He indulged them and basked in the attention off-court, but ultimately, Oikawa never put his heart anywhere else but on volleyball, especially when he's in a game. Oikawa never even glanced to the audience or pay attention to the girls' screams. He has amazing work ethic.

Yeah but that's the point.. you don't have to like someones personality to appreciate them as a character. I would probably dislike oikawa IRL but still like him in Haikyuu because he's brilliantly written and extremely entertaining as an antagonist.
There's many examples of this across anime; hisoka, chrollo and meruem (all in hxh); madara(naruto), light yagami(death note), askeladd(vinland saga), yoshikage kira(jojo's), king bradley(fma brotherhood)
There are many more examples of characters that would be very unpleasant to meet in our world while being excellent characters + fan favorites in anime.

That jumping-with-spiking-form-and-then setting thing is really common on brazillian teams, and Ishikawa and Nishida like to do it a lot too.

As far as the translation goes for this part, the phrase is Japanese is the same for an attack on 2 and a setter dump. They're literally saying "two attack," which usually refers to a setter dump but is a broader term, since it's taken literally. The subtitles *always* translate this as "setter dump," though; I've noticed the subtitles aren't always 100% perfect, so that's probably why. Hope this clears things up a bit for anyone who's confused.

  • @namidasaison9942

im gonna explain a little bit about their names
so in japan they have 2 words in their name: given name (first name) and surname (last name). The surname is usually inherited from the father. In general, Japanese people will address people by their last name if they are anything but good friends to show respect and politeness.
so basically all of haikyuu's character call each other by their surname (except some people like noya, he called hinata by his first name) or given name + san (Asahi-san, Daichi-san). kageyama's full name is Tobio Kageyama. Tobio is the given name, and Kageyama is his surname. it was also written as Kageyama Tobio, it doesnt matter. here karasuno's player with their name (surname + given name form):
    - Hinata Shouyou
    - Kageyama Tobio
    - Tsukishima Kei
    - Yamaguchi Tadashi
    - Nishinoya Yuu
    - Tanaka Ryunosuke
    - Azumane Asahi
    - Sawamura Daichi
    - Sugawara Koushi

Little side note. The practice match against Aoba Johsai was way before the match against Nekoma, even before Asahi and Noya came back to the team. @bucciaratiswife 3 года назад +6

Hey Victoria! Loved the video. You're so fun to watch.
Here are a few fun facts that may be interesting to know:
    1. In Japanese culture, people typically address others by their last names unless they are close friends or have gotten permission otherwise. You actually write your name on formal documents as "Last Name- First Name." So, Kageyama's last name is Kageyama and his first name is "Tobio."
When introducing himself in Japanese, he would be like "I'm Kageyama Tobio." In English it would be, "I'm Tobio Kageyama."
A good example is how most people call Tanaka by his last name, but his bestie Noya calls him "Ryuu" which is a nickname for his first name "Ryuunosuke." (Tanaka Ryuunosuke)
    2. Oikawa calls Kageyama "Tobio-chan." Chan is a suffix typically used for kids or in a cutesy manner/ to show endearment. It would be rude to use it towards a superior. He talks to a lot of people in this way and it rubs some characters the wrong way because it can sound patronizing.
    3. Seijoh is the shortened version of the name Aoba Johsai.
Aoba Johsai is spelled 青(ao)葉(ba)城(joh)西(sai) / 青葉城西 in Japanese. If you take the first kanji (青) and the third kanji (城) and put them together, it would be Seijoh (青城). So Seijoh is basically a nickname for the school.
    4. The meaning of Aoba Johsai more or less translates to "West of Aoba Castle"/ Sendai Castle. So they are often depicted as a king and his knights AKA Oikawa "The Grand King" and his knights being the players on Seijoh.
This is similar to how Karasuno is always shown with crows because "karasu" means crow.
