An accurate and concise explanation. That's right it's a "don't let others beat you 'cause if anyone beats you it'll be me!" situation. Love the friendship they have.
A *lot* of Shonen anime have this trope. The main duo is rivals but best friends at the same time. They’re very protective of each other even if they deny it to others but they also wanna compete against the other and succeed, and if the one gives up or doesn’t put in effort, the other usually snaps them out of it because their passion for whatever it is they’re working to succeed at is part of why their bond is so strong. It’s called the Stock Shonen Rival trope on TV Tropes
Yup, Hinata's end goal is to defeat Kageyama. He doesn't want Kageyama to give up just because he got benched since Hinata wants to beat him in the future.
Kageyama's mindset is "If I give my hitters MY best set, that gives them the best opportunity to score" but he's realizing that it should be "If I give my hitters the kind of set that they specifically excel at, that will give them the best opportunity"
@@ritikashah1722 yes, he was called a "goody two shoes" because he gave the hitters tosses that were easy to hit but wasn't taking advantage of their individual abilities.
@@ritikashah1722 That’s his second character arc, we still not at it yet. Kageyama’s game mentality is flexible but he struggles in wanting to achieve the best possible mindset. By this time, he still got a long way to go
Yeah I was gonna say this! It's an anime trope. Also, it was a way to motivate Kageyama like "you can't lose to them, so stay on your game!" which is why Suga was thinking he wasn't worried about Hinata since he was still able to be fired up and encourage Kageyama
The part you missed/ didn’t understand he was basically saying to Kageyama: you adjust your spikes based on Hinta’s mood/ current gameplay so why not do it with the rest of the spikers but in order to do so you have to talk to them and know how they’re feeling
Not just that, he is also saying to Kageyama to not fight alone and trust his teammate a little more, rather than try to figure out how to beat the other team by himself
Some fun symbolism with Daichi, Suga, and Asahi. Their numbers are 1, 2, and 3 which not only reflects their seniority as the oldest members, but also the order they usually touched the ball when they all were starters. Daichi, 1, would dig, Suga, 2, sets, and Asahi, 3, spikes.
In terms of getting his hitters hitting at 100%. Kageyama doesn't gauge his hitters as he tends to sets where he thinks the ball should be instead of where his hitters like to hit or where their most optimal at hitting the ball. Suga, adjusts his sets to put his hitters in their best positions for hitting while Kageyama makes his hitters adjust to his sets hence why they aren't hitting at 100% majority of the time.
Yeah, Kageyama kept trying to set faster to avoid the block, but in the process his sets became too hard for the hitters (to the point that Tsuki completely missed a set). Ennoshita was saying that it's not only up to Kageyama to get past the block, and if he sets his hitters up for success they can break through, like Tanaka demonstrated.
That conversation was groundbreaking for kageyama because when the point gap began to widen in the first set he shouldered all the pressure of closing it on himself instead of believing that his teammates could help. If you go back and watch you’ll notice he started to say “I need to” instead of “we” a lot which was a big part of the reason he was subbed out for suga.
Right?! That gets my heart accelerating and thinking "Kageyama nooo" I can see why he'd feel that desperation to close the gap that he can't think clearly and starts acting on emotions, but still Kageyama c'mon calm down, don't let your middle school self resurface, and work with the team!
also kageyama was often forcing his spiker to spike a certain way, instead of given them a slower, and easy to hit toss to give them option. But that's because he never ajusted his tosses to his hitter before that, and just set the way he though was the best to get around the ennemy block
@@zetsuna-friedshrimp Exactly! He wasn’t willing to allow any input from his teammates because he believed he knew what was best. So seeing that his teammates could still compete even without him was a big eye opener. He’s progressed a lot but still has those king of the court tendencies.

The conversation with Kageyama is so important and groundbreaking because the way Kags always sets the ball is HIS way. He was the “dictator” that set the ball where HE thought was best. But if the ball went up in a way that was comfortable for the players, they could play at 100% of THEIR capacity, not Kageyama’s.
Real question; has anyone else had the thought about waiting for Victoria to finish the season so you can binge it all at once I mean course I'm not gonna.. but I thought about it
To answer your question near the beginning : Shoyo and Kageyama are friends now they just are competitive with each other and now they just have a friendly rivalry. (But they do still sometimes fight though) Also just wanted to mention Sugawara is my favourite character and he is underrated. Even if he’s not playing most of the time he is such an important player on the team! Love your videos Victoria!!
@@mansfaye1084 Ik but their rivalry in middle school and currently in the show is much different. Yes he’s planning on beating him but in a more “friendly way”. Shoyo still wants to beat Kageyama but they’re not “enemies”. Imight not have worded that comment correctly >w
the reason that hearing "if our spikers can hit at 100% capacity then they can compete with most blocks in their way" is like a groundbreaking thing for kageyama to hear is because he tries to do too much when the going gets tough. as seen in the last episode, he kept speeding his sets up and trying to break through seijoh's blocks with his talent rather than give sets that make the most of his teammate's abilities and letting them carry more of the weight in a game.
@@frozen_peas He plays in a couple games.... Johzenji in S2 and then again during S3. There's more emphasis on him during the S3 game (I didn't even remember him playing in S2).
@@victoriabrowne Victoria others have mentioned, but I'll say it. After this match something important happens after the ending song in episode 24. The scene comes after the ending song and it's important so please watch until the end.
The part you didn't understand: Kageyama was being told "Hey look, Suga sets to everyone uniquely whereas you only set to hinata uniquely. Imagine if instead of bringing the best out of just Hinata you brought the best out of everyone else as well? Like Suga is showing us here"
Suga's last play was all 3rd years; their old combo. Receive by daichi who wears number 1, set by suga who wears number 2, and spike by azumane who wears number 3
I KNOW WE ARE ALL APPRECIATING SUGA BUT I WANNA ADD MORE INTO THAT. He’s so reliable. Fyi, Vic, he’s the oldest member of the Karasuno and the vice captain. He’s not strict like Daichi but he for sure is someone you’ll respect as well because he respects you first. It’s just so emotional how he takes care of Kageyama, which is the youngest member, and how he makes sure that he’s not there to take away anything from the latter, but to be a support, a pillar. Suga is the kind of senpai that Kageyama has needed since then. The one that will guide him to a better direction as a player. Our first year setter just needed someone and im so happy that they got each other’s back. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH.
Yes, you're goddamn right about that. In some fanfiction and shit I don't like the way they write Sugawara like you said "a psychotic helicopter parent" he's supportive, but please do not over do it because Sugawara is friendly, charming, smart, supportive, encouraging, but not how some of the fandom portrays him. They sometimes make him annoying when Sugawara is not annoying (to his opponents he is, but not himself)
TOTALLY! The fandom absolutely does Suga a disservice!!! He's the most emotionally intelligent guy on the team, which is so amazing! But this often gets him the "mom of the team" rep, and not always in a good way. Is emotional intelligence considered a "feminine" trait by society? Cuz if so, that's very sad for society.
@@byusaranicole that’s literally the exact same way I feel!! I hate that Suga became the “mom” just because he’s kind and caring (completely ignoring the fact that he’s feral as fuck)
What Hinata means when he says HE wants to beat Kageyama, is that Kageyama can't give up an lose his cool before they meet each other on the bigger world stage. So until then they both have to keep winning and stay strong and can't falter to the enemy team. It isn't until they finally get to play each other that one of them can lose, if that makes sense
Ahhh!! This is one of my faaaavorite episodes from season 1!! It shows that even the players on the sidelines are useful to the team, and we actually get to see Suga play for the first time! My favorite part of the episode is Suga's last rally, because it was all 3 of the third years. Daichi with the receive, Suga setting, the Asahi with the attack. It's a small detail, but I love it everytime! Super excited to see what you think of the rest of the game!!
The conversation between Kageyama and Ennoshita on the bench was groundbreaking for Kageyama because it was the tipping point in his shift of perspective as a setter. From back in middle school to this game, whenever Kageyama was pressured during a game all he could think of was what HE could do individually as a setter to turn the flow of the match around - and his main solution was to go for speedy, hard to hit sets that most of the Karasuno hitters aren't able to hit very well (other than Hinata). Ennoshita pointed out to Kageyama that if Kageyama instead fully trusted his hitters and just focused on giving them the sets that complemented their skillset the best - they'd be able to get past the blocks because all the hitters on Karasuno are talented in their own way (Asahi's power, Tanaka's tooling, Tsukishima's height). This is something that Oikawa also pointed out last episode or the one before that - just to further highlight how good of a setter he is to be able to notice what was going on despite not even really knowing the Karasuno hitters very well.
Victoria, have you ever thought about livestreaming these reactions and editing them for RUclips after? I'm sure others have probably mentioned this, but it would give you realtime engagement with the Haikyu homies that you were craving from the episode 18 reaction vid. Just a thought. These videos make my Tuesdays! Thank you!! ♥️
@@victoriabrowne you have to be very careful with live streaming, u might get spoiled. Coach Donny tried something similar and unfortunately got spoiled.
Problem with streaming is spoilers, and I think having a constant chat open can distract from dialogue and cool moments. I imagine it might require more editing for YT as well. Plus, if you do a watch-along style thing, you can't pause it and talk since it'll fuck up the timing for everyone. Streaming's a neat idea for the community aspect, but it can make the reaction part of it clumsier, and personally the reaction is the main appeal of this kind of content.
At this point in Kageyama's game, he likes to put the tosses in the place he believes is optimal with the least blocks, or highest chances of hitting towards an area that is open on the other side. The conversation is groundbreaking for because Ennoshita is driving Kageyama to the conclusion of taking the hitter more into account, accommodating them so that they could "fight in mid-air" with sets they're more comfortable with. He's dictating where they should hit, when Ennoshita is saying he needs to give them some freedom and that they're all pretty advanced and can make some of those decisions.
Alright, let's do this- *me, getting ready to write a whole paragraph explaining the "Let's win this" scene to Victoria* *Victoria:* _gets it immediately_ *Me:* "..." But, in terms of the "If our spikers were hitting at 100% capacity, don't you think they could compete with most blocks that got in their way" scene, what Ennoshita (Daichi's look-a-like) was hinting at was Kageyama is saying to their spikers "Your will isn't needed, my sets are in the perfect place, so just hit where I tell you to."
@@celiamacias1740 Suga was going to say "go win this" putting himself out of the context of the win. Saying "let's win this" instead involves him in the act of winning. It's something like saying "you will win this" or "WE will win this".
BTW as Japanese fan, I think your pronounciation of “Sugawara san” is really good!! Japanese words are basically sounds flat, you don’t stress any syllables.
About hinita’s and kags relationship, they don’t hate each other anymore but they do have a rivalry that’s started from the very beginning. Also if you don’t understand what a convo is about you could just switch it to English really quick. I do that sometimes lol
My interpretation of the 100% comment from Ennoshita is that Kageyama is recognizing that Sugawara is bringing out that 100% from the other players through means of communication and overall positive energy. I think that line will be much clearer in the next episode (which btw i’m so excited for that reaction bc episode 22 is my favorite of season 1) but basically Kageyama is realizing that Sugawara is pulling out potential from the other players in ways that Kageyama had never thought about doing before. Like you said it’s the IQ vs EQ thing and this is what Kageyamas realizing in that scene. It also goes back to the whole “king” mentality thing with Kageyama, he’s realizing that he needs to give his hitters the tosses they want rather than doing what he thinks is best for them. (also this is just my interpretation based off of what i know so i could be completely wrong here)
One of my favourite part of this episode was when the 3 third years touched the ball to score - before Suga was subbed out and when Asahi told Suga to give him the ball 1 Daichi with the receive 2 Suga with the set 3 Asahi with the back row attack The foundation, the support and the power :)

It's groundbreaking for Kageyama because he's never thought about what best fits his hitters. He's always analyzing and *deciding* in the moment what the best set for the situation is, even to the point that he's deciding what kind of hit should be made, thus robbing his hitters of their own agency. Basically, he sets the ball to the place *he* thinks will best result in his hitter getting the kill, rather than considering the idiosyncrasies and preferences of his spikers (which is what Oikawa does so expertly). If you remember, there has been - and will continue to be - a lot of talk about how Oikawa makes his hitters their best. Oikawa gives them the ball that will best maximize their skillset, rather than demanding they hit the ball to a specific location.
At 22:10, Ennoshita was basically telling Kageyama that if he adjusted to the other spikers and gave them tosses that were easier for them to hit the same way he does for Hinata, he could let them play at their best and get around the block without having to rely on just speed.
During the last substitution when Suga is talking to Kageyama, Suga was about to say "Go win this", but he catches himself and instead says "Lets win this". Basically, it's almost like Suga mentally is about to give up on the setter position, or knowing that he's being replaced/outshined, so he passes that role to Kageyama entirely: "Go win this instead of me" or "Go win this with Karasuno, I'm not the main setter anymore". However, as I said, he doesn't say "Go win this" out loud. Instead he says "Lets win this", [we] [together], which is a more inclusive statement. They as a team should win this. Suga says it in a way that shows that he's still part of the team, and he's not giving up on his position.
The really sweet moment with Suga's last point is that daichi and Asahi, the other third years, realized it was going to be his last point and saw he was down and that's why Asahi told him to bring it to him and he'd make it count because he wanted to send him off on a high note. Daichi got the receive, suga set, and asahi got the kill so it was the third-year trio sending Suga off

1) subbed 2) keep predicting lol 3) stay on that pronunciation game 4) the breakthrough: kageyama sets to put his hitters where he thinks they should score - the king... suga tosses his hitters their best balls trusting them to score - the conductor... 5) the third years are freaking amazing... 6) in for livestream reaction show 7) predictions on point as per usual... 8) I love that hinata is a middle... so against the grain but makes the freak quick decoy thing go... See you on the new channel Vic!
The idea behind the conversation Kageyama had with Ennoshita is that Kags is the kind of setter who sets the ball the way HE thinks it should be set and that the spikers are capable enough to adapt to his sets. But Ennoshita is positing that maybe if Kageyama took into consideration *how* certain spikers like Tanaka and Asahi like their sets (a little higher/lower, a little closer/further from the net, etc.) then he would be able to bring out the best in their spikes. Kind of like how Oikawa isn't as "skilled" as Kageyama, but Oikawa is "better" because he is capable of bringing out the best in his teammates. Edit: Also...Victoria. Girl. RUclips literally has a streaming feature. Yes we can watch live with you lmao and I'm sure a lot of us would like to watch your *live* reactions :)
The team dynamic is a super interesting conversation. I've been coaching for over 10 years and as altruistic as I'd like to be I've found having a set starting line-up has always yielded the best result. Players are able to fit into a clearly definied system and add to it with their skills and strengths instead of the system changing to fit that week's starting line up. Identity is really important for team growth.
When they are talking to Kageyama about Suga helping everyone hit at 100%. I think he’s referring to the fact that Suga isn’t just worrying about passing to the attackers for the best outcome, but he’s considering everyone on his team and their position and how to help them. This is a big thing for Kageyama because before joining the team his world was very small, he only ever really worried about himself. After joining the team his world got a little bigger, with him taking into consideration for Hinata and all of the attackers on his team. Now, after watching Suga interact with the team he’s starting to understand the benefits of communicating and considering everyone on his team. This shows great personal growth for him and it always made me so happy to see that he’s understanding the value of having a team. Ok, long paragraph later, I just wanted to say Congratulations on the new channel! I subscribed as soon as you said too 😁 I love your reaction videos! I think this episode has had the only translation issue that I’ve personally had upon rewatch so far... when Suga talks to the coach after switching back with Kageyama, it’s sightly more accurate to say that Coach Ukai uses the words “next time” and Sugawara was super happy to hear that he would likely get to play again. I kind of worried that the meaning might not hit the same way. But judging by your reaction, I think the feeling got through after all 🥰
At 25:30. I think Kageyama is realising that each spiker is different, so he needs to learn to toss the ball in a way that each spiker can work at 100% of their potential, like Oikawa does. In other words, he need to adjust his tosses to the hitters and not the other way around.
Am I an extreme hardcore haikyuu homie since I literally just found your channel and marathoned every one of your haikyuu reactions? I just binged the whole series with you and loved it
This is legit one of my fav episodes! I was so excited for you to see it and I can't wait till you get to my fav episode with Tsuki in it, my favorite one with Hinata, and I'm so SO excited for you to get to Haikyuu To the Top! It's the most recent season and it's amazing! Our team has grown so much and I know you'll be so excited/proud to see all their progress. Especially Hinata's!!!
I love this episode, and it took me a rewatch or two before I got all the story nuances. Here's a bit of character stuff, to answer some of the video's questions: Hinata sees Kageyama as both a rival and a partner. In that first episode, Kageyama's talent was the wall he vowed to overcome, and though they are friends and partners now Hinata still wants to overcome that wall and force Kageyama to acknowledge his worth. This is why they always have the silly competitions like racing to the gym - because Hinata's trying to prove he's better. So when Hinata says "I'm going to beat you, so don't lose to anyone before then", what he means is that he doesn't want Kageyama to fall from the top of his game...because there's no point in beating Kageyama unless it's at the height of his power. He also hasn't forgotten that first loss, and before the tournament Hinata says he wants to beat Kageyama in a formal match some day to level the score (even if he needs to follow him to the world stage to do so). The conversation (i.e. "if they were all hitting at 100% capacity, don't you think they could compete with most blocks") is a big character moment for Kageyama. As you say, Kageyama is both really talented and not very emotionally intelligent (in my headcanon, I see him as a little on the autism spectrum). Up until this point, Kageyama has been throwing the sets that he thinks are best for each scenario and position. He sort of assumes every spiker hits the same way, and when things go wrong it's because "you didn't hit my set in the way I wanted you to". What he hasn't really thought of until now is "is my set the one that's best for your play style?" As Ennoshita says, the only one he tailors his sets for is Hinata, who's such an inexperienced spiker that Kageyama is forced to adjust for him. This is the first time Kageyama starts considering he might adjust his technique for each teammate's preference and style of play (more on this next episode), and it's another step away from the "King of the Court" mindset that ended up hurting him before. This is one of my low key favourite episodes, because it shows both the development for Kageyama, but also the conflict in Sugawara's position. That last point at 29:07 when Suga's about to be switched out, he's almost resigned to the fact that this this could be the last time he ever plays as setter for Karasuno if Kageyama gets his mojo back (remember he's a third year, and many of the third years end their season with this tournament). Asahi and Daichi (his fellow third years) know this as well - so when Asahi tells Suga "Give me the next ball, I'll make it count" what he means is "if this is your last point, I'll make sure you go out on a high." When he switches out, he can't bring himself to tell Kageyama to "Go win this", because he suddenly realises he can't give up on the hope that he might get another chance to play. And off the back of that, he's overcome with emotion when Coach Ukai implies that he would switch Suga in for other games as well. All your pronunciations are pretty accurate - only one I picked up on is Aoba Johsai, which is "Ow-Bah Joe-Sigh"
At 23:00, what Ennoshita is trying to say to Kageyama is that he's not setting the balls the spikers feel most confortable hitting, instead he is setting the balls he thinks are best for the play. He's trying to say Kageyama doesn't communicate enough to ask instructions on how he can improve his sets in order to make the spikers more comfortable when they are attacking. In other words, he's not USING the spikers at 100% of their capabilities because Kageyama's sets, despite being very precise, are not in the comfort zone for each spiker. They have been just hitting whichever ball they are set.

Wait, I just realized that! 😲😲
I didn’t realize this omg thank you
If spike is blocked then Niyo no4 comes in to dig
also, dai ichi means number one or first
In terms of getting his hitters hitting at 100%.
Yeah^
Yeah, Kageyama kept trying to set faster to avoid the block, but in the process his sets became too hard for the hitters (to the point that Tsuki completely missed a set). Ennoshita was saying that it's not only up to Kageyama to get past the block, and if he sets his hitters up for success they can break through, like Tanaka demonstrated.
This is why Kageyama was given the nickname "King of the Court"
@@eloisecarcini1280 "don't let your middle school self resurface". Wise words for every adult, really.
@@zetsuna-friedshrimp Exactly! He wasn’t willing to allow any input from his teammates because he believed he knew what was best. So seeing that his teammates could still compete even without him was a big eye opener. He’s progressed a lot but still has those king of the court tendencies.

Suga is my favorite too! Though I don’t think he is underrated. He is special coz he can help the team even he isn’t on the court, in my opinion.
the reason that hearing "if our spikers can hit at 100% capacity then they can compete with most blocks in their way" is like a groundbreaking thing for kageyama to hear is because he tries to do too much when the going gets tough. as seen in the last episode, he kept speeding his sets up and trying to break through seijoh's blocks with his talent rather than give sets that make the most of his teammate's abilities and letting them carry more of the weight in a game.
Victoria: it would be so nice if they could all contribute, like they need everyone!

The part you didn't understand:
Kageyama was being told "Hey look, Suga sets to everyone uniquely whereas you only set to hinata uniquely.
Suga is such a great character, it's a shame the fandom makes him a psychotic helicopter parent.
I feel like you just said that in a voice that made it seem normal to say ‘psychotic helicopter parent’ like it was nothing lol
I love this fandom
@@haleemabegum8573 He's so legit... I love how he gets under the skin of the teams he plays against... Heeheehee....
What an eloquent and accurate explanation! That's right it's a "don't let others beat you 'cause if anyone beats you it'll be me!" situation.
Victoria pausing to say "they're holding hands" is the reaction I didn't know I needed

@@victoriabrowne you would definitely need moderators in chat that will delete any spoilers and hints if you really do want to live stream
Suga is the one of the most wholesome character I have seen in animes. And believe me, I have watched quite a lot of them.
Suga yelling at Daichi I swear. The mom is the only one allowed to scold dad. Hahahaha
Alright, let's do this-
*me, getting ready to write a whole paragraph explaining the "Let's win this" scene to Victoria*
*Victoria:* _gets it immediately_
*Me:* "..." But, in terms of the "If our spikers were hitting at 100% capacity, don't you think they could compete with most blocks that got in their way" scene, what Ennoshita (Daichi's look-a-like) was hinting at was Kageyama is saying to their spikers "Your will isn't needed, my sets are in the perfect place, so just hit where I tell you to."
Could you explain the lets win this, I still don't get it at all
@@celiamacias1740 Suga was going to say "go win this" putting himself out of the context of the win. Saying "let's win this" instead involves him in the act of winning. It's something like saying "you will win this" or "WE will win this".
That last scene is probably one of my favorite scenes in the entire series. So emotionally charged.
BTW as Japanese fan, I think your pronounciation of “Sugawara san” is really good!! Japanese words are basically sounds flat, you don’t stress any syllables.
The last Suga play is actually symbolic because all the third years are the only ones who touched the ball making Suga's last point count.
Victoria: "they're holding hands~"
Me: AKJDHSKD KAGEHINA SUPREMACY
(also this is just my interpretation based off of what i know so i could be completely wrong here)
Suga always radiates so much warmth when he gets to play and I personally love this so much! :)

Vic: Shoyo'd be bouncing up & down
Me: *cries in season 4*
AAAAAA VIC YOU PUT NISHINOYA TO YOUR BANNER
Ahhh... There goes ✨Mr Refreshing✨, at it again

7) predictions on point as per usual...

I swear I was waiting all the day 😫. God tnx💞😍
Finished an exam that had two parts and took me a bit over two hours to complete so I've been waiting for this too!
Friends can always have a good rivalry. There’s always going to be a competition between Hinata and Kageyama.

But judging by your reaction, I think the feeling got through after all 🥰

shame on me for being late when she said "they're holding hands" I FELT THAT i thought you wouldn't notice
At 25:30. I think Kageyama is realising that each spiker is different, so he needs to learn to toss the ball in a way that each spiker can work at 100% of their potential, like Oikawa does. In other words, he need to adjust his tosses to the hitters and not the other way around.
“Only one of them can actually get what they want” -> that about sums up most of the games in this show :(

I love this episode, and it took me a rewatch or two before I got all the story nuances. Here's a bit of character stuff, to answer some of the video's questions:
Hinata sees Kageyama as both a rival and a partner.
The way you showed us your oily hair. I feel like that brought us closer
it's like a new level of our relationship lol
I love watching Victoria everytime she uploads I just have to watch it
i'm always early haha. Who else just spammed the reload button until the video popped up.
Suga the mother figure for the team😌😌😌
I loved your comment "Suga has the EQ, and Kageyama has the IQ". I've just subscribed your new channel!!!!
