Same with Victoria, I think the most attractive thing about Shoyo is the hunger for victory.
He knows that he is disadvantaged due to his height, but he never come to the court simply for playing volleyball. He aims to win, to face stronger opponents, to become better.
Like he said, it's something like an instinct, something he born with. There's no reason for purchasing victory ( not watching the English version, don't know that line in English)

I’d probably be friends with him. Personally the types of people who I find most difficult to be friends with are those who lack self-awareness or are emotionally dependent on others, because those type of people can be very annoying and draining respectively. The types of peoples I like to be friends with the most are those who are very expressive and opinionated but flexible enough to understand new perspective and enjoy temporarily playing devil’s advocate. While I’m, not sure about the last point Oikawa is self-aware, independent, expressive, opinionated, and understanding. While probably not the ideal friend, he’s kinda ENTJ so being friends with someone like him wouldn’t be boring (I’m ENTP).

I think what it's so appealing about Oikawa is that he is a realistic character and maybe a lot of us see ourselves in him, the whole confident facade to hide deep insecurities really resonated with me.

    Just a reference:
Haikyuu is a manga originally and is created by Haruichi Furudate .
It ended in 2020 and Furudate was a middle blocker when he was studying in high school.
Then he studied design afterwards and created the manga “Haikyuu!!” at 2012.
His aim of creating Haikyuu is to “Tell the world how interesting the VOLLEYBALL is.”

As someone who grew up with Haikyuu it helped so much, not even just in volleyball. "I wish I can move my body like everyone else", "Things are fun when you're good at them", "you are your daily habits", "taking care of yourself is also apart of hard work", "life is very fair and also unfair", "I'm average but that doesn't mean I can use that as an excuse to stop working" and daily meditation etc are just a few things this series models. Also kindness and mentorship, how they're things that should be normalized. I hope you guys continue to enjoy this series and I can't wait for season 5

I literally think about haikyuu whenever I feel uneasy lol especially in orchestra class. I relate to Yams a lot but with playing the viola instead of serving. I can't properly do vibrato without a lot of concentration, and I can't move my bow as light and flowy as I want to. my conductor just carries herself with so much confidence that even a mistake seems like it was intentional! I keep reminding myself that the only way to grow is to learn from my mistakes, thanks to Hinata and Yams and the whole team 😁 I can't wait to see what the Karasuno bois have in store next season!

31:08 - "this is probably how Haikyuu is written".
Actually I believe the creation of Haikyuu was a pretty solitary process. The creator (their gender is unknown but I'm going to call them "she" because I have a very strong suspicion that it's a woman) played volleyball in middle and high school, and their team was pretty weak - "the kind that always lost in the first game of the preliminaries" - but she really loved the sport and she also wanted to be a mangaka (Japanese comic book artist). So after a first not so successfull publishing attempt (a horror story) she started writing that manga about volleyball that she wanted to make for a long time, and it was a success. Of course, she has help from editors, coaches, etc. along the way, but it's still fundamentally a creation of a single person.
I mean, just imagine: the creator's not a great player but her work influenced the volleyball world more than if she was playing on a national team. There was a quote from a famous Brazilian coach in one of the first episodes, and now the olympic player who trained under this very coach (Sarah Pavan) is watching the show and loving it.
Thank you for this video, Victoria, coach Donny! It was a really great hour.

In regards to how Haikyuu impacts players now.
I am really excited to see the next generation of Volleyball players. I know a few kids in middle school that started watching Haikyuu and decided they want to play.
And while I'm sure it will be tough at first learning the basics. They will be going lightspeed once they have those down. It will be so awesome to see the growth and results of those players with the shared knowledge and pure inspiration this show provides. I'm really curious what the different levels of Volleyball will look like in the next 10 years.

  • @mariajesseannegloria3026

    Vic: This show is deep.
Yup. It is. It really is. And once you’re done with the anime/manga, you know that it’s not just the characters that went through a development. You know you yourself come out with an immense emotional/mental growth/learning.
P.S. Takeda Sensei is designated with the title of coach because of the fact that he’s employed by the school. But he’s technically just a faculty adviser of the volleyball coach. But later on, the school hires Coach Ukai (the blonde) and was designated as the assistant coach. Takeda-sensei retains the head coach title. Their dynamics is that Takeda takes care of all the paperwork and represents the team to official meetings while Coack Ukai focuses on the training and actual-game coaching.

I think one of the things that some people forget about, or not really emphasize on, Takeda is that he's been teaching high schoolers presumably for a few years before being the advisor for the Karasuno volleyball club. He's had experience with in dealing with kids of all manners of personalities. Because at the end of the day, they're still kids even though they're athletes. He may not have the technical skills and instinct regarding the sport, but he provides great personal and sometimes even intimate insight and perspective which is crucial for their development as people going into adulthood. I'm not saying that Ukai isn't providing that, but Takeda definitely has more of a grasp on that aspect.

In the Haikyuu movie "The end and the beginning", there' a scene where Nishinoya was trying to repair the broomstick with a metal plate and a screw, then Asahi came and tried to help him. Asahi initiated to fix it as he took the blame for having a broken mop. The broken parts were attached by a metal. I believe it symbolises that they their team was broken because of the previous fight of Noya and Asahi, but they fixed it, and now they're back with a stronger purpose.

That is also why everyone in the show's form is so abnormally good, it's literally traced stills from pro players in some cases.

@@emvee9905 The reason why Oikawa is so jealous of Kageyama is that his technique, his hunger and drive is high (as he mentioned). Kageyama's weakness is that he doesn't understand people not that he's not insanely hard working. It's why Oikawa lost his spot to Kageyama temporarily when he shutdown, when he stopped connecting with his team or stress out he'll lose. Kageyama on top of working hard is also conscientious, he never over trains and he takes immaculate care of his hands. Oikawa upgrades over him and takes his spot back by having Iwai-chan snapping out of it and teach him about teamwork and self care at the same time. Kageyama then upgrades over him by having Suga, Hinata, and the rest of Karasuno. It's just a constant back and forth between equals IMO.

Though I really liked his dynamic with the rest of Seijoh (their extra scene in the movie made me cry), it wasn't until much later in the manga did I finally fully appreciate his character. Haikyuu was created by Haruichi Furudate in 2012. It started as a Manga, perhaps best understood as a Japanese equivalent of a comic in black and white. Furudate was a middle blocker in school. The way a Manga is created is that the author comes up with the story and the artwork and an editor comes in to check the quality of the work and the story progression. The manga for Haikyuu was completed in 2020.

I love seeing these types of reactions and how people interpret things differently. Personally, I love studying the characters and the dynamics like, “Okay, so why does this person treat this other person this way?” Or, “Why did they say that to them?” But sometimes that also makes me...skim over the actual plot. 😅 And sometimes there are some situations that I don't focus on because I'm busy thinking about something else, some other character dynamics, like...I hardly ever thought about the conflict between Noya and Asahi? So hearing them talk about it brings some other things to light for me, so like...idk. Things like that make these reactions...captivating for me.

Takeda-sensei is not really a coach in the sense of someone who understands the game or can provide insights on technique or strategy.. He's the club advisor and in charge of club finances and other more pedestrian activities (equipment, transportation, schedules, coordinating with other teachers and teams). That's why he went looking for someone with actual volleyball experience (the younger Ukai) to provide coaching insights. Ukai-kun is not employed by the school. He just volunteered (after being cajoled) to help out. Maybe someone who has read the manga can clarify but I'm guessing that Takeda-sensei (as a fairly new teacher) was probably assigned to be the volleyball club advisor after the elder Ukai-sensei was forced to retire early because of his health. Takeda-sensei, as the school employee, is officially "the coach" but Ukai-kun does the actual coaching.

correct. Oikawa also had really great volleyball IQ meaning game sense/strategy (I guess due to being older by 2 years so he had more experience) - "this is how to break the spirit of this player" or "this is how we make the freak quick ineffective" etc. Kageyama quickly catches up though by learning from all the other setters and when he was no longer the lonely king :)

Loving this, so like, on the Hinata being the player outsiders admire while not being good, I think that's the whole point of it. And if you see, Karasuno players never say anything like that when third parties comment on Hinata because it would ruin the perfect decoy. I mean, the reason everyone sees him is because he spikes like 300 balls per game, always running and leaving the block behind on raw speed, and then with the flashiest attack there is in that instant quick, of course everyone's gonna see him like that, and Karasuno loves it because it makes every team that plays them be aware of him, be focused on him, to the point that the decoy works even better. So unlike what you're saying, Karasuno kind of needs everyone to think Hinata is the best of the best, and they make him play in a way that portrays that, by not having him do a single receive or anything clumsy, so that he always looks perfect
