Ok a lot of people don't get the Benkei thing so I try to do this for every reactor that gets to this point as well as their audience. "Ushiwaka" the nickname given to Ushijima Wakatoshi in this show is the childhood name of a legendary historical Samurai from Japanese history. Ushiwaka was known for a great feat of being able to make predigious leaps such as when he was said to have jumped over 8 boats in a single bound. Having Ushi and Waka in his name and playing a sport where jumping is important made Ushiwaka a greatname for Wakatoshi. Benkei was a retainer to Ushiwaka. they have a meeting sorta like Robin Hood and Little John out on a bridge. He was said to be a mountain of a man who carried 7 weapons on his back and would never back down. It is said he died standing protecting the door to the room where Ushiwaka committed seppuku in order to not be captured in his final battle. It is said that he stood there so fiercly no one thought he was dead until someone went up to talk to him the next day and he finally fell over.
So why was Leon specifically interpreted as Benkei? His looks? I don’t think they established Leon and Ushiwaka together much for people to see him as a Benkei. Sorry I still didn’t get it :(
@@NatassaK Benkei was Ushiwakamaru's right-hand man, and Reon is the vice-captain (and his looks are considered to be similar to Benkei irl as well) so Hinata's mind just automatically "Benkei!" seeing him lol 😂 Considering Tendou and Reon's nonchalent response, perhaps he's too familiar with the joke.
For an explanation, What goshiki is saying is that he wants to be the ace after Ushijima graduates and he is going to prove that he is worthy of that title in this match. Ushijima encourages him. Also, while they seem super serious and intimidating, shiratorizawa are a buch of goofballs like everyone else in this show

from what Hinata said to shiratorizawa's player Leon he gave him the nickname Benkei... Ushiwaka's real name is Ushijima Wakatoshi(Ushi+Waka) there's also a really famous in Japan i think he is a samurai named Ushiwakamaru kinda similar to Ushijima's nickname Ushiwaka... that samurai Ushiwakamaru has a right hand man named Benkei...and Ushiwaka's teammate Leon is kinda the 2nd powerful spiker in Shiratorizawa
The creator of Haikyuu is also known for horror manga, so with Tendo's design he leans into that a bit more. Which is why Tendo stands out so much right off the bat.
WHOAH, was not expecting the Japanese intro. As a half-Japanese fan, I appreciate the effort that must've gone in to practicing your intro in another language! Much love to you Sarah
日本語でのイントロ、ナイスサプライズでした!Since there weren't any major problems with the subs this ep, gonna just leave my support & not my usual opinions about the translations. Tsukishima showing his excitement in his own way by adjusting his goggle-glasses, the starting players being called out, & everyone coming to cheer are some of my fav parts from this very hype-you-up ep. Just gonna add that the Karasuno students & faculty came to cheer this match not only because it's the finals, but also because it's being held on a Sat. Some people seem to feel sad that no one seems to care enough to come for the earlier matches, but if you're not either on the team (but didn't even make the bench) or in the official school cheering club, you don't get exempt from classes. Similar thing applies to family members, too, since many wouldn't be able to get off from work etc on a week day, especially for anything less than the finals.
As someone who has been studying Japanese for the past 4 years, your intro is amazing! Studying the language is a tough process and requires a lot of dedication, discipline and understanding and it's great to see you make such an effort for foreign fans! Season 3 is one of my favourite matches in Haikyuu, second only to the very last match in the manga. Some of my favourite characters, Goshiki, Tendou and of course, Ushijima are introduced and a certain someone's character arc finally comes to a VERY satisfying end. Looking forward to seeing your reaction to this epic matchup!
Every time I watch season 3, I'm amazed by the attention to detail with the fact that Daici still has that injury on his face from the Wakunan match, which cannonically happened only 2 days ago.
I think this IS my favourite episode of all. I'm always so drawn to the "behind the scenes" stuff, like the test of the sounds, the set up of the cheer, everything. I also love all the call backs to the first match Hinata ever played
I know what I'm going to comment on is not about haikyuu, but I need to tell you this, when I was little at 11/13 years old, I watched some of your games here in the Brazilian superleague on Unilever Sky, I always loved watching you play , and today I'm a volleyball player and by coincidence I found your channel this morning, it's amazing to see you after so many years, I'm very happy

EXTREMELY excited for this, i just recently found your channel, im a seasoned swimmer myself panams, worlds and hoping to make the olympics as well, i love seeing a serious athlete's point of view on this and your reactions. My younger (still in HS) sister plays volleball and this show hypes her up and made her want to train the whole past 2 summers and I love that for her. Will be showing her your channel :D and I' sticking around for the whole series if you're watching it !
This season is friggin' awesome. I love it and the character that gets the biggest growth will make you tear up and support him for the rest of your life🎉❤
In case you don't know, Benkei and Ushiwaka is Japanese historical figure from Heian period (around 1200CE). Since Ushijima nickname is Ushiwaka, Hinata suggest that Leon must be Benkei.
One thing i love from the show and this episode especifically is how they take time to show the little details. The sound testing on the gym, the badges... Those are all things that do happen in real life, it helps to ground the action and make it more relatable. And i swear it does it's job beautifully.
I love the end with the Ushiwaka "reveal" about him being left handed, I'm pretty sure that at this point of the series it had appeared before visually but never verbally stated, and the first time I was watching Haikyuu I didn't notice until this point
It is not official, but Onodera (Japanese men's national team MB) said he feels Hyakuzawa is himself. Onodera went to Tohoku high school, the powerhouse of Miyagi and the model of Shiratorizawa, and Furudate( author of Haikyuu) came to the school to collect data when he was a student. They have some similarities, such as +2m players from Miyagi, started playing volleyball in high school.
@@SarahPavanVolleyball Haikyuu sometimes collaborated with Japanese men's national team players, such as Yanagida, Ishikawa, and Nishida, and Furudate sensei illustrated them with Haikyuu characters. I hope you can collaborate with Haikyuu as well! Please ask Shueisha!!! (Publishing company of Haikyuu)
I kinda feel an undersold moment is Takeda being surprised and humbled to be announced as the head coach. We all know that Ukai does most of the actual coaching, but I assume that Takeda has to be the coach of record because he is part of the school's staff. Not to mention he does always find something solid and inspiring to say to the team when they need it.
Hey Sarah I hope you have fun learning Japanese!(from a Japanese-speaking Chinese fan here) Also love how you spotted number 5 in the first glance! I'm so excited for your reactions to season 3😆
One thing about Wakatoshi that is how brutally honest and completely unfocused on other thing besides volleyball. He's absolutely confident in his abilities and sometimes he can come as an asshole, but he is the exact opposite. He just not good with words 🥺
Loved the intro! One tip, you can just say 「バレー」 instead of 「バレーボール」. I used Rosetta Stone while in the Army. It's amazing. You use it for a while and one day while you're watching anime, you suddenly realize you understand most of it, maybe you miss a few nouns but you get the flow of the conversation. And then you just keep at it and continually improve your vocabulary.
The reason there are so many people watching, and the tv cameras and all that is because this is the prefecture final to determine who goes to nationals. This is essentially the state championships.
Wow!!!!! The begining of the video was awesome! Outstanding! It blew my mind! You know what?! I got goosebupms all over my body! GOOSEBUMPS!!!! You rock!
The kanji for Shiratori in Shiratorizawa is white 白 bird 鳥. Their team is thus depicted as a single large white eagle (and you can probably already tell the reason why) whereas Karasuno is composed of crow 烏 and field 野. Volleyball fans who aren't familiar with Karasuno can be seen struggling to read their name and confusing it with Torino because the kanji for bird (tori) is 鳥, very close to crow (karasu) 烏.
OMG!! Just when my day was going not so well, this drops... Thank you so much! And what an intro! Keep doing what you do cause you are awesome, so hype for season 3!!
ushiwaka is with tsukki probably my favourite charakter. we only saw ushiwaka by himself, so that we could have a reveal who the other players are. its an anime thing, were people in the show dont talk about certain people until they show up in the show, but every charakter in the show should know them

this is still personally my favorite match. Just such a "Friday Night Lights" underdog feel to it. The team everyone underestimated made it this far to face the most dominate team in their prefecture. This season is only 10 episodes.

It’s gonna be an emotional roller coaster and we’ve got some big things coming up, curious to see how many times you’ll cry or get emotional, cause I still shed tears and I already know what’s gonna happen XD
I'm super excited for you to reach season 3. I always think of Ushiwaka when I think of you. Lefty playing on the right side, best player in the area in high school. Nishinoya did pick up the hit from Ushiwaka, but I think he's having problems with the lefty spin and it came off his receive weird. We're going to see a lot of Ushiwaka. I can't wait for you to react to the Karasuno boys trying to handle the lefty.
oh my god sarah there's an arc in haikyuu that is sooo perfect for you. i can't wait for it to be released 😭 altho, it's sad because it will only be a two-part movie. i hope you can still react to it.
whoa what an amazing intro! you did great! and yes, this season will be the entire game with shiratorizawa. I believe that the creator said that they didn't base any characters off of real life players, but I'm not 100% sure? love the contrast between karasuno and shiratorizawa - their team, team relationships, cheerleading section - its all so different! super excited to see you watch it. :)

Ushijima Wakatoshi's name is shortened by folks to "Ushiwaka", which is a reference to the historical Military Commander from the 1100s, Minamoto no Yoshitsune.
Yoshitsune was known as Ushiwakamaru in his youth, and is the subject of many legends.
Yoshitsune had a right-hand man who was just as famous and powerful, a beast of a warrior monk called Mushashibo Benkei, who pledged his undying loyalty to him after Yoshitsune defeated him in a duel.
It's almost an archetypal pairing: Yoshitsune and Benkei, Gilgamesh and Enkidu, King Rama and Hanuman, etc.

@@SarahPavanVolleyball Too many to count 😂 maybe you should have a cry count 🤔😉
@@SarahPavanVolleyball this season has so many emotional and exciting moments from both sides of the court and the soundtrack is amazing too. Plot wise is one of the best season, but from a technical stand point the animation, the music and also the volleyball insight of this season it simply has no equal. Can't wait to see you react to it.
so after 1 episode, I'm at 1
@@SarahPavanVolleyball I estimate at least 1 cry per ep 😂
Hi, I am a Japanese fan.
I'm surprised that Sarah speaks Japanese! Thank you!
Looking forward to your reaction to season 3 as well 🥰🏐💕
サラ〜!日本語めちゃくちゃ上手で興奮しました😂❤ありがとう❤❤❤
Sarah! Your Japanese is already perfect! i was so excited! 😂❤Thank you very much❤❤❤
Sarah: Complains about just the music being changed during the commercial break every season.
Season 4:👀
from what Hinata said to shiratorizawa's player Leon he gave him the nickname Benkei...
日本語でオープニング話してる!!!😳
凄く嬉しいです😊😊
頑張って調べて話してくれるのかわいいし嬉しいです😆
15:00 - Sarah’s instinct is soooo on point, as usual. Edit: timestamp more precise for comment on Tendo.
日本語での自己紹介とても上手ですね😊毎週楽しく観させてもらっています♪
I know what I'm going to comment on is not about haikyuu, but I need to tell you this, when I was little at 11/13 years old, I watched some of your games here in the Brazilian superleague on Unilever Sky, I always loved watching you play , and today I'm a volleyball player and by coincidence I found your channel this morning, it's amazing to see you after so many years, I'm very happy
Sarah, thank you for learning Japanese♪ I was surprised at how good you were!
I'm also learning English on your channel 😊
この方のリアクション通して見てきたけど、オリンピック選手という世界で戦ってるすごい方がハイキューにすごくのめりこんで楽しんでくれてて、すごい感慨深い。
Thank you!!!
冒頭の日本語発音良くてビックリしました。
ついに始まる白鳥沢戦!超楽しみです!
These are her Japanese phrases.
こんにちは!
RUclipsチャンネルへようこそ。
私の名前はサラパヴァンです。
私はオリンピアンとビーチバレーボールの世界チャンピオンであり、長年プロのインドア選手です。
I'm so happy you practiced Japanese.
507 PTY
This season is friggin' awesome. I love it and the character that gets the biggest growth will make you tear up and support him for the rest of your life🎉❤
In case you don't know, Benkei and Ushiwaka is Japanese historical figure from Heian period (around 1200CE). Since Ushijima nickname is Ushiwaka, Hinata suggest that Leon must be Benkei.
SEASON THREE BEST SEASON!!!
And “Hikariare” is definitely the best opening song (and the imagery is fantastic!) of the series.
日本語を話してくれて嬉しい😆サラさんのお話と編集、面白くて大好きです♡
It is not official, but Onodera (Japanese men's national team MB) said he feels Hyakuzawa is himself. Onodera went to Tohoku high school, the powerhouse of Miyagi and the model of Shiratorizawa, and Furudate( author of Haikyuu) came to the school to collect data when he was a student. They have some similarities, such as +2m players from Miyagi, started playing volleyball in high school.
Is this for real?!?! Omg I love that!!! Can someone PLEASE collect data on me and put me in the show??
3 more episodes I can't wait!
Hey Sarah I hope you have fun learning Japanese!(from a Japanese-speaking Chinese fan here)
Also love how you spotted number 5 in the first glance! I'm so excited for your reactions to season 3😆
Sarah is speaking my language😆😆🥰 You made my day!!
私は日本人です!
冒頭の日本語、とても上手で驚きました!
season1から視聴しています。あなたのリアクションが本当に好きです。
これからも楽しみにしています。どうぞご自愛ください。
Ngl the introduction of the final make me tearing up too, everything is so good to build the hype and the proudness
めっちゃ聞きやすい日本語でした🎉
あと内容毎回面白いです、サラ選手のハイキュー解説が1番エキサイティングです🏐
One thing about Wakatoshi that is how brutally honest and completely unfocused on other thing besides volleyball. He's absolutely confident in his abilities and sometimes he can come as an asshole, but he is the exact opposite. He just not good with words 🥺
Even the coach have back stories and some player of shiratorizawa. Maybe you will be touched by their story. Cant wait.
最初の日本語の挨拶最高でした!
いつも楽しく見させてもらっています。
これからも一緒にハイキューを楽しみましょう!
From Japan with love♡♡♡
Loved the intro! One tip, you can just say 「バレー」 instead of 「バレーボール」.
I used Rosetta Stone while in the Army. It's amazing. You use it for a while and one day while you're watching anime, you suddenly realize you understand most of it, maybe you miss a few nouns but you get the flow of the conversation. And then you just keep at it and continually improve your vocabulary.
tendo number 5 is my favorite because hes just hilarious HAHHA great in the dub too
Hooray for season 3! You're in it for a long long haul! I am excited to see your ep4 reaction.
The reason there are so many people watching, and the tv cameras and all that is because this is the prefecture final to determine who goes to nationals. This is essentially the state championships.
I'm really excited for the upcoming episodes, S3 is really peak matches! 💖💖💖
I know it's hard to remember over all the seasons, but Hinata starts the first 3 seasons with the same introspective thought.
I’ve watched your series so many times but it’s the first time I’ve realized you call him ushiwaka, it’s so cute 😭🫶
hii thought I'd revisit some of your older vids now that you're rereacting to the series with Adam but i must say Sarah nailed the Japanese intro 👏👏👏
日本語で話してくれて嬉しい!
伝わりましたよ!!👍
I’m back watching some of these reactions after watching the ones with Adam. The SIDE EYE when Goshiki challenged Ushijima LOL
Wow!!!!! The begining of the video was awesome! Outstanding! It blew my mind! You know what?! I got goosebupms all over my body! GOOSEBUMPS!!!! You rock!
I just can’t wait till you get to episode 4. The character development is so good in this show and I know you’re guaranteed to cry in that episode
Something to point out in the OP. There is the brief flash of the eagle and teh crows. It's one eagle vs many crows. Interesting symbolism to consider
Yes! Foreshadowing perhaps?? (Don't answer that question! 😊)
Let's go! Sarah getting sponsors!
OMG!! Just when my day was going not so well, this drops... Thank you so much! And what an intro! Keep doing what you do cause you are awesome, so hype for season 3!!
ushiwaka is with tsukki probably my favourite charakter. we only saw ushiwaka by himself, so that we could have a reveal who the other players are. its an anime thing, were people in the show dont talk about certain people until they show up in the show, but every charakter in the show should know them
You are the best sarah, you literally made my day
Yay I’m so excited we’re on season 3!! This is the season I usually rewatch if I’m feeling sick or down, and it always cheers me up. (Also great intro, Sarah!)
サラさん、こんにちは!いつも楽しみにしています。日本語で話しかけてくれてありがとう。シーズン3一緒に楽しみましょう
I can’t wait to see your reactions to the rest of the episodes. If you think you have been emotional until now… So many great moments ahead of you. Season 3 is the best one, for me.
yesss!! onto my absolute favorite season of haikyuu. this season goes above and beyond fr. i wholeheartedly believe the outro for this season is one of the best 🎶 ALSO YESS THE JAPANESE YOUVE LEARNED IS GREAT!!!!
I'm so happy and excited. I finished binge watching your haikyuu reaction last month and now finally, I'm here. Enjoy watching haikyuu!! It's my comfort anime^^
Really looking forward to your journey through this 3rd Season. Can't say anything else. Just really hyped!
Ushijima is my favorite character in the show (along with Tsukishima) and Shiratorizawa is my favorite team in the show so I'm SUPER hyped for this!
As a fan of Karasuno and Shiatorizawa, I LOVE SEASON 3!!!
This season is going to be INSANE!!!
I am glad that you spoke Japanese.サラさんもハイキューも大好き❤
SARAH I AM ONE MINUTE IN AND YOU ARE ADORABLE!!! AND SO SMART AND TALENTED WHAT THE HELL???
The new intro is the best one!! Best animation, symbolism, and song!
Yes, we are finally here! I am so excited
this is still personally my favorite match. Just such a "Friday Night Lights" underdog feel to it. The team everyone underestimated made it this far to face the most dominate team in their prefecture. This season is only 10 episodes.
Another great video and the start of the season 3 journey!! So excited, so hyped to see your reactions!!
It’s gonna be an emotional roller coaster and we’ve got some big things coming up, curious to see how many times you’ll cry or get emotional, cause I still shed tears and I already know what’s gonna happen XD
Learning japanese language! Wow the dedication! I LOVE IT❤️❤️
I'm super excited for you to reach season 3.
There are several scenes that I am waiting for your reaction to, believe me, this season is one of the best in Haikyuu!
oh my god sarah there's an arc in haikyuu that is sooo perfect for you. i can't wait for it to be released 😭 altho, it's sad because it will only be a two-part movie. i hope you can still react to it.
わあー!日本語とっても上手です🥹
頑張って話してくれてありがとうございます☺️
Omg Season 3?? I wasn't expecting it so fast! Let's goooooooo
Ahhh I hope you get to like Nummer 5 later... I really love him! I'm hyped to see more ❤️
Im watching your channel from Japan. That is why I was surprised and pleased with the opening greeting😊
keep an eye on first year Tsutomu, I personally like him a lot, and also he's very talented
"it's just a club" reaction is not far now! Let's GOOOO!!
whoa what an amazing intro! you did great! and yes, this season will be the entire game with shiratorizawa. I believe that the creator said that they didn't base any characters off of real life players, but I'm not 100% sure?
love the contrast between karasuno and shiratorizawa - their team, team relationships, cheerleading section - its all so different! super excited to see you watch it. :)
The two teams could not be more opposite 😂 ok, thanks for clearing up the Leon question. It was really making me think.
I don't mind to fill a form for a Sarah character tho..
I'm Japanese. I always watch you! I was very surprised by the Japanese greeting, but I was glad to see it because it was so good!! I will continue to support you!😊😊
