Foe me, the frame by frame walk through is by far the best way to explain. You can never over explain. More detail at the most basic level ensures that the final objective is possible. Skimming the basics makes it look slick but misses the most important fundamentals in performing these manoeuvres. Please stick to the detailed step by step explanations. It bridges the difference between learning and a nice ‘look how good this trick is,’ video. If I wanted to watch amazing tricks then there is no end of videos with pros’s or experts showing off their hard earned skills. Doesn’t help normal people who board for fun though, and want to improve at the next hard earned holiday trip. Great work Malcolm.
Thanks! Yeah I cant wait to get back to making more videos, but the resorts over here might not be open for quite a while yet with all the new lockdowns!
I like this style tutorial because it allows you to breakdown movements better in real time as well as to slow them down to highlight what you are talking about.
Malcom, you make the best snowboard tutorials on youtube, ever! i love the way you explain the techniques and how you make them so easy to follow! but what i love most about your content is that you highlight and mention the little things that most instructors or pros don’t because its basic knowledge or subconscious movements. when they are in fact the most important things for beginners and intermediates! thank you for the time and effort you put in your videos, please keep them coming! i always look forward to your next release whether its a tutorial or a review, or even just fun runs! because you always put something to take away from ❤️
Awesome, thanks for the feedback! I'm going to really be focusing on the channel going into this winter and plan to make regular tutorials as well as other bits too!
This was super useful, thanks - I’m an instructor too (BASI 2) and I love the technical depth, and learning about thought process - so insightful! Good stuff, more please - for 360s and front boards!
Looking like this winter is pretty much a write off here in france so I'm hoping that by summer the 2alpes glacier will be back open which will mean more park videos for sure!
Great tutorial Malcolm! I tried 180's for the first time yesterday and I found it was really hard to commit to the full 180. my body would always do only 90 degrees. this video really helped me out and I'm stoked to work on these exercises. Thank You.
Loving your work man. Found you by searching reviews for warpig of which I have just purchased the 2022. You have the best tutorials I have found so far - will get the whole family watching.
Awesome, thanks for watching! This season has been tough as the lifts didn't open once here in France, but I should be able to get some more summer riding done soon, as the glaciers open back up in Europe!
Great video! Nobody else really goes into this much detail, and the pauses and explanations in between help me understand what I should be thinking about. Good stuff!
Great video and thank you for taking the time to explain each step in detail Malcolm! As you have mentioned, jumping switch is quite difficult, so was wondering if you can make a video on that? (Also there seems be enough videos/tutorials/tips on simply riding switch, but not as many, if any at all, videos out there on switch jumps and landing switch).
Awesome tutorial.... Next trip I am taking things up a notch for sure and this type of content is really motivating to want to progress from just carving the pisted runs!
Thanks for your videos, been riding for 25 years and I find it so interesting to see the technicalitites broken down like this. I also teach and I've noticed that short people get a grip earlier on than the tall ones like myself, which makes sense. is there anything posture wise you would recommend when coaching tall people? Anyway, I am drawn to the shape of your board - what brand is it, can't tell.
the bottom of the warpig was so sick, reflecting light so much it looked like need for speed neons haha As always very well done video. Never disappoints.
Thank you for getting into the technicalities of the half cab snowboard version versus skateboarding version because as a skateboarder of 10 years transitioning to snowboarding for the last four I get into arguments with a lot of people beings a lot of the terminology came from skateboarding like when I used to skateboard I had a hard time explaining why a front side half cab is different from a Nollie front side 180 because a lot of the tricks came from vert skaters let alone the fact that people get confused with what the front side 180 is and what the front side 50-50 is
Coming from skateboarding too I hear you! I was so confused to start with as a half cab and switch front 1 in skateboarding are very different things, but in snowboarding not so much!
I like this format but wish you would show more rewind and repeat on video and more slow motion before the jumps and during jumps. So, Explain then show more jumps. Thanks, I've learnt a lot so far and haven't been on the mountain in a few yrs plus I was self taught, didn't take any lessons and was on dbl black diamonds in the trees my first day ever on a board and ever on a mountain and had never skied. I have found that yeah of course i taught myself some bad habits but hoping that your videos will help me out. Watching you videos have shown me my problems and where to improve to enjoy riding. Thanks!!!
Love your videos. Is there a chance for a “how to start jumping” at all 😂. You can kind of tell dynamics of this but would be great to know what exercises to do on the run, to be bit more prepared for the park, rather just bet on luck 😁
So are you doing down unweighted turns or up unweighted turns when taking off for the backside 180? It looks to me as if you are doing down unweighted turns but correct me if I'm wrong.
I’d love to see a similar video about ‘proper’ half-cabs and caballerials. I can nollie decently but struggle to get much pop when trying to add any sort of rotation so my spins are really awkward. I’m guessing it’s an issue with my shoulder alignment so I’d love to see how you break it down. Thanks for all the great content, Malcolm!
You're a very good teacher. This kind of first person view is brilliant for learning and your step by step analysis with thought process behind every move is awesome. Thank you very much. Suggestion: why not list some kind of a platform for donations? PayPal whatever. I'd happily buy you a coffee/beer for your videos and I'm in the US so I can't buy from the store that gives you a referral bonus.
Ah many thanks! I will set up a few options for next season when i'm making videos consistently. I will have patreon for people who want to support monthly, or a paypal tip jar, but have also been looking at an app that will allow people to film themselves doing one run / trick, and then I can give them some quick video feedback for a small feedback. Thanks for watching, and hopefully I'll be back riding the glacier in a month provided covid allows... I can't wait to get back at it after resorts staying completely shut here in france this year!
Would be interested in seeing multiple approaches on to the rail, it's still something I'm hesitant with and I feel like more boarders are struggling with. Boxes come quite intuitively, but rails require a little jump and more commitment.
Another helpful video man, you have a great ability of explaining things and the helmet cam format is excellent . Would love to see a few beginner rail videos to help progress from 5050 into basic boardslides etc. Cheers for your awesome channel :)
Do you still have to look where you going or is it natural already ? I've been riding for 2 seasons and usually I make mistakes when I'm not looking where I'm going. If I keep myself focused at all times I don't have a problem. Can't really do jumps yet but I'm looking forward to it this next season. Sick video bro congrats 🤟
You just know the content is going to be quality. At what stage in the air do you initiate the counter rotation for the shifty BS 180? I see people doing pole tap 180 reverts all the time just popping off flat ground but can not figure out how they get enough time to pull off all the movements...
Thanks Kevin, the counter rotation starts right away at the beginning of the jump, think about bringing your front arm across your board to grab your tail (seatbelt grab) as this is pretty much exactly is the position you need to be in. This creates enough wind up through your body for you to then release and pull it back out in the opposite direction. It's not quite the same movement but you can get a feel for it simply by sitting on an office chair. Lift your feet off the floor and you will find the only way to initiate any spinning movement is to counter rotate your body. Do it with enough vigour and you should be able to get at least 90 degrees of rotation in both directions, therefore adding up to a 180! And yeah, it's a good trick to pole tap, and the more you actually tap the pole (or I like doing them on the padding they wrap around the snoe cannons here) the more it will then spin you back around!
Malcolm Moore haha yeah it’s a trick I’ve always wanted to do. I can shifty and can 180 but just can’t put them together with the small amount of air time popping off flat ground. Because the shifty is a FS rotation and the spin is BS I tend to catch that toeside rail as I initiate the take off 😅
Still great content malc, like you said maybe a bit more snappy Just had a week down here in nz on th new k2 simple pleasures, have to say best board I've ever owned, so much fun, what with this board & watching your tutorials, a complete game changer, has really helped me & I'm sure others So keep that great content coming, it really does make a difference, huge thanks
I really liked this video, but as a beginner I feel this is even too advanced for me. I don't know how to jump/ollie yet. It would be great if you post a tutorial about how to start jumping, literally from the ground up, even without a ramp, and then how you start using ramps. I've never even tried a ramp before.
Great vid, is it better to jump off the lip or ollie? Need to practice so will pop to Hemel Snow Centre now that it's opened again when I get the chance!😁
It depends on the size of the jump, and therefore the speed you are going, I did actually record a bit about this but felt the video was already long winded enough! So if it's just a small jump, the sort of size in this video or smaller, you can ollie. And in this video on the ones where I feel like I'm going too slow I do an ollie. But try and get your speed right with just a jump because as you progress onto bigger kickers you dont have time to physically ollie the board, you simply jump off the lip. Basically just use your Ollie's to give you a bit of extra height if needed!
Hi Malcom, love the vid series! when doing spins on flat /side hits I have no issues, however when hitting kickers I seem to break at the waist on landing, especially with blind landings sometimes causing under rotation and putting my hands out. Any advice?
I enjoy these video. One request, I ride goofy so explain some dynamics of riding as if a goofy stance boarder were watching. Keep shredding and producing...I’ll be watching!
Try and use little bumps in the snow to give you an extra bit of pop, but then when you start doing them iff jumps, that will take out alot of the effort for you!
were i living is no snow and no mountains ( i living in north garmany ) i can only drive snowboard in the holydays . did you know like a trick to train snowboard whitoud snow ?
Skateboarding is always good practice! Otherwise you can jump around on your carpet with your board on, but nothing quite replicates the feeling of being on snow, apart from being on snow!
Let me know if you enjoyed this tutorial format, I definitely talked too much 😂, but if it worked I can make the next one a bit more snappy!
