  • What type of snowboard turn should you be doing in different conditions? When learning how to snowboard it can be confusing how to know what snowboarding techniques you should be using. There was alot to go over here, but this should give you somewhat of an idea about what turn size, and techniques, you should be employing when snowboarding across the mountain!

      @@malcolmmoore Great videos. First time viewer. I have been riding a long time but never really thought too much about the types of turns so this will be fun to practice. One question I had is I am really having trouble doing FS board slides on fun boxes, I tend to slide out (because I am on edge) and fall on my butt when I get into that board slide. Could you make a video on how to spin on a box or rail?

    This is exactly the lesson I was looking for today! I'm over in Méribel and after 2 years away from the slopes, my skills are far from what they were (as is my core strength). I spent my first run on the floor. Sat aside for a while and watched this video (it's part slush/part ice here depending on the time of day) and nailed every run afterwards! Dude, you are an absolute hero for these lessons. Practical and achievable. Chapeau!

    Aw man, absolute gold that - I’ve started taking notes! “up-unweighted = more passive ride” such a good description when comparing it w/ other types of turn where the whole body is much more engaged in directing the board. Q - are ‘terrain’ turns same as ‘retracted’ turns? Or is that too simplistic a comparison as I guess it’s difficult to keep the upper body still/separated from lower body over moguls. Ta in advance

    Malcom, I can’t thank you enough for offering your snowboard wisdom for all to benefit from! This past season, I only had the time/money to get up to the mountain 4x. I don’t get up to the mountain frequently enough to begin with, so I really wanted to make good use of my days up there by improving every day. My first day this season I was just a passenger on my board and felt like I had maybe 30% of control in my turns and riding. On my 4th day… I was RIDING! And I was 90% in control for all my turns. The last day I was applying down unweighted turns, which feel a hell of a lot like surfing (something I am more used to). Applying your wisdom, I was able to improve my riding in 4 days. Next season I aim to be able to ride in powder!

    A good analogy that came to my mind is that you can imagine sitting on a chair that basically stands on (or is centered over) the toe edge so that your weight goes directly towards the edge and when you want to switch to the heel edge you basically stand up from that chair and sit down again on a chair that is behind you which stands on your heel edge. As you can imagine it's hard to switch a chair without standing up first ^^

    Thanks again Malcolm for your time and knowledge. Everytime I watch one of your videos, it gets me excited for the next time out to improve my riding.
    Not sure if youve done a video on difference binding angles and the benefits of each. I'm planning to try a forward stance (positive on both bindings) the next time I head to the hill. I think it's supposed to help make turn initiation and edge hold even easier/more responsive. And I'm not really riding much switch at this point yet.
    What binding angles do you prefer riding?

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Gordon. I ride +18 -12 pretty much all the time, although I have my splitboard set to +21 -9. The slightly forward facing stance is really fun for carving in particular, it let's you open up your body and therefore angulate with your hips to get better edge hold. Think about keeping your hips (easier to visualise if you do it with your shoulders too) parallel to the angle of the slope and you can generate really strong turns! For me though I dont open my stance up too much just so that I can do a bit of switch as well!

  • @dannyli2163
    @dannyli2163 2 года назад

    Hi Malcolm, thanks for another exeptional and detailed video. A few areas im confused about is for up-unweighted turns when you stand up and extend both legs going into toeside, should you push down slightly on your front foot (toes) to get the board faster to the fall line and then press both legs into the shin? Vice-versa going into heel side when you stand up do you press into your heel in the front foot to make it go to the fall line and sit down with both legs? Or is it simply just standing up with weight balanced in the middle of both feet and applying more weight on the front foot to make the board head to the fall line? In addition, when you apply torsional twist with up-unweighted turns do you open/close the door after you stand up and then bend knees or does the movement of opening/close come after u sit back down with knees bent? Thanks, much appreciated!

    Malcolm, just wanted to say I have watched and rewatched many of your videos and they are an awesome reference to someone who is looking to progress past intermediate snowboarding and taking his riding to the next level. Do you have any tips about maintaining consistent speed on steeper blue and black runs here on the states. I feel I do a better job controlling speed going from my toe to heel side but I slow down too much transitioning from heel to toe on steeper slopes. Any tips or specific videos I should watch? Thanks again for all your hard work and helping us all improve and enjoy our shredding!
    Anil

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  3 года назад

      Hey Anil, thanks for the support! Its difficult to say without seeing you ride but one of the best things to do to improve your riding, and edge changes, is to practice your carving. Get used to the feeling of edge changing without skidding the board. This will give you the sensation of setting your edge early in the turn. You can then bring this feeling back into riding steeper slopes. You don't necessarily want to carve on steeper slopes but the edge change itself should feel pretty similar, and then you can always make more of a skidded turn after the edge change to control your speed. Hope this helps!

    So I'm pretty new to snowboarding and the last time i rode I injured myself on an ice patch. What happened is I was for my skill level rather fast and carving medium turns. I got onto the ice patch with the toe side of the snowboard and started sliding then the edge getting grip and jumping up and kinda rattling down the ice which overstretched my tendon.
    I want to go back to snowboarding but am afraid of it happening again.
    I'd be thankful for general advice on how to deal with ice patches and how I could have handled the situation better.

      Avoid ice! Haha, sometimes you can't though... the choice is either to try and hold your edge on it by getting your posture spot on, or sometimes it is actually just better to relax your ankles and skid over any icy patches.

    A question....how should one handle icy trails where some parts are steep and rocky hard? Here is northeast US, this is a frequent occurrence in winter.
    I am a beginner and I snowboard only in resorts with groomed trails which frequently have patches of ice; and sometimes they are hard enough that one would not want to fall on it.

    Hi Malcolm! Thanks for the video, it's really clear! I watched almost all your video and they really helped me a lot for this season. I just want to ask about the upper body posture when doing the up-unweight and down-unweighted turns, the upper body should be separated from lower body and always facing front or turn with the lower body?

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  3 года назад

      It can help to anticipate the turn by turning the body into to the turn a little first. This movement comes when you twist your board by turning your knee into the turn to make the edge change. Therefore it it often more pronounced in a down unweighted turn as you are in a low down position meaning you can really twist your knees out. It still can happen in an up unweighted turn but not so much, you tend to stay more in line with your board for these.

    Great vid Malcolm!! For more icier conditions would a down unweighted turn be more effective? I realize I'm sliding a lot to lower my speed before I do a turn on parts of the hill with less snow. Do you have any tips to overcome that? Thanks my dude!

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  3 года назад +9

      Ice sucks, end of discussion! Haha, it does but theres ways to ride it. Often an up unweighted turn is fine as, like I say, it gives you pressure through your board when you need it. Sometimes in icy conditions trying a down unweighted turn could put too much pressure through the board that you can't manage it and end up slipping out. Basically its not so much a decision on what type of edge change but a decision on whether you think you can hold an edge on the ice. If my board hasn't got very sharp edges or it is just so icy that I know I'll have no luck whatsoever then I'll just actually relax my ankles and end up skidding over the top of it. However if I am going to try and grip on the ice, then it's more a case of getting my posture completely in the right place, that I direct all my weight right over the edge, and then just hope that it holds!

    Another great video, thanks so much Malcolm, especially for scaling the run, phew! I'll be hitting the slopes in a couple of days, looking forward to applying what you've taught. Question, is there any value in creating a lot of "torsional twist" to the board, in other words, when making a toe edge turn, for instance, is there value in accentuating the front knee and toe down and forward while simultaneously also pressuring down on the back heel, thereby creating more "twist" in the board. Naturally, the back foot would ease up through the turn and transition to the toe edge. Really appreciate your attention to mine and everyone else's questions and comments....You da best!

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  3 года назад +1

      Thanks, I guess if you really accentuated the movements it would put you at a higher edge angle right at the start of the turn. This is quite an aggressive style of riding, think like ryan knapton style carved turns. But in everyday riding it's not always the best thing to do. As you continue through a turn more and more pressure builds up against the board so you want to progressively increase the edge angle, whereas if you go in with a high edge angle already you have nowhere else to go. But nevertheless is can be fun to ride like this especially on mellow pistes when it's easy to manage those excess forces!

      Hey Karl, thanks, when riding ice, avoid it, go to the airport, and book a flight somewhere else. Haha nah, ice always sucks, sharp edges help, as do things like magnetraction. But I'm not really a fan of magnetraction for how it feels when the snow is good. Sometimes you're just best letting the board skid a bit more across the surface of the ice, as trying to hold an edge on it can be difficult. I might get around to the video on this, but the thought of seeking out an icy slope doesn't excite me all that much 😂

    Thanks Malcolm, brilliant video. One question I would love to understand the answer to, is why do up-unweighted turns at all, once you've learned down-unweighted? It seems like up-unweighted are taught to us when we first start out, perhaps because they can be done slowly at low speeds? However do they have any advantages at all over down-unweighted? Are there any circumstances when you would need to do up-unweighted instead of down?
    Honestly love your channel. Thank you for all the effort you put.

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  2 года назад +1

      Up unweighted work really well in most piste conditions, its what I use most of the time to be honest when I'm just riding casually. As you don't need to be in the strongest low down position right after the edge change, you are just going down the slope with gravity at that point, they work fine. You are in the strong position anyway when you get into the fall line and from there you can then push against the board at manipulate the turn size like in a down unweighted turn anyway. Down unweighted are definitely better in powder and moguls,and can be fun on the piste, but up unweighted can be done quite aggressively on piste too!

I bought a Warpig for this season so can`t wait until next year to get on the goddam beauty. I`m trying to persuade my skier mate that Alpe D`Huez is the place to go, as I think it looks great from your vids.

      Thanks man, not sure the supermarket is the best place to be practicing though 😂
      ADH is a cool resort and I live here and still find alot to do. It is very south facing which can be awesome or crap, let me explain, the fact you get loads of sun is great but it means slopes are more prone to melting and then they refreeze again over night which can make for icy pistes. North facing pistes tend to just stay cold and grippy. But all the sun is great too! It's a pretty big resort but if you're an advanced skier you can blast around most of the areas in a day. Its big but not like the size of some of the mega resorts out there. You can always go to 2alpes for a day on your 1 week pass so long as you get transport across. 2alpes has some good wide pistes and usually a better park than ADH. The proper off piste is really good, but is best done with a guide, as alot of it is quite exposed. There is really good safer stuff off the sides in obvious places too but I guess like most places this gets tracked put very quickly. And avoid french holidays, again the same for all of france with this tip! Hope this helps!

    Hi Malcolm, great video! I’m current practicing my down unweighted turns and have a naive question - it seems all the tutorials online about down unweighted turns only talk about the benefits of down unweighting, but what could be some reasons people might want to still use up unweighting if they already learned to do down unweighting? It just seems up unweighting has no obvious advantage in any situation compared to down unweighted turns. Is that so? Or is there any case where up unweighted turns are actually preferred.

    Also as a side question... do you think you can incorporate different stacked stances in a video (such as that real low forward facing stance pro freestyle riders use)? I’ve been looking for something like that and have found nothing about it, and you are definitely my best teacher lol. I’m sure many would benefit from that and principles from it. Thanks!

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  3 года назад +1

      So the turn size for slope is to do with the amount of time spent pointing down the slope, therefore picking up speed. In a big (wide) turn you spend alot of time pointing down the slope you pick alot of speed therefore it's best for mellow slopes, if you did it on a steep slope you would end up going too fast, therefore smaller turns for steep slopes. You can if you want do small turns on mellow slopes too but you will end up going quite slow, but nothing wrong with that!
      As for the stances, yeah that's something I want to cover soon, but I would like to give alot of demos and example so it will probably wait until next season when I'm on the lifts and have a bit more time to explain things!

    Hi Malcolm, I have just discovered your channel and after 30 years of boarding I am learning lots of new stuff to try this winter, especially the down unweighted turn. I have a question about fixing an issue I have using the up unweighted turn on steep groomed piste and in powder. When I am doing tight turns in a very narrow space I find that the back of my board seems to be vigorously bouncing from one turn to the other almost pivoting on the front of the board, I also find my back arm seems to get a life of its own and is flaying around a bit if I dont concentrate on holding it steady. It is different to the camber giving the return of energy to the whole board from one turn to the other on easier slopes. I ride a Jones hovercraft which has a short tail end. I am not a speed merchant and like to feel the turns even on the steep stuff. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Martin

    Hi Malcom, Great content as usual. With the down unweighted turn would you slightly extend your legs and torso through the middle of the turn to help lock in that edge while also giving you the space to move back down for the next edge change?

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  3 года назад

      Yeah exactly, normally when we ride on the toe edge you want your hips pushed forward however when dropping down for a down unweighted turn you're unable to get this position right away. However at the beginning part of the turn you can get away with it, the key is that as you push out you start to get your hips forward so that you create a strong position throughout the turn!
