- Snowboarding down the Sarenne in Alpe d'Huez, the world's longest Black Ski Run, seeing how many turns I make down the whole piste! I've snowboarded the Sarenne many times but in this run I count my turns to see how many I make over the whole 16km black run. I've tried to film a different view of the piste compared to all the other videos on RUclips, allowing you to see my snowboard and the turns I make.

I came back to this video as I just had to ski my way out of a long cat track with lots of skiers due to some red run closed(strong wind) in Japan and I managed to board all the way squeezing thru all the skiers. Lots of boarders couldn't make it and I told my friends, if u can do the sarenne bottom section all the way, any skinny cat tracks are nothing! Eaaasy. (Actually it wasn't that easy mainly that was a 6ft wide cat track with all the boarders and skiers forced onto it)
Of course, learning from the best also helped 😁. I rem at the bottom section, u led the way and u went much faster than I felt comfortable! but then I realised yep, needed the speed or won't make it out.
These days, I have no fear of cat track, I would try to gauge how fast I need, if too many skiers, I'd just wait a bit for them to part way so I at least got a spot to squeeze thru.
Although I still end up waiting quite a bit for my friends to come thru... 😂

The glacier no longer exists from 2020, everything melted. Really sad story, you should look up how it looked around 100 years ago if you want to have your mind blown away!

Really interesting video. I teach at a small hill in Canada and would love to have that kind of terrain. Must be fantastic for you and your students to not have to hop back on the lift after 300ft of vert! Looking through your channel it is going to one I recommend to my clients.

@@malcolmmoore Yeah we had to shut down Monday. I'm at a hill called Mount Pakenham just outside Ottawa. Not big but a phenomenal ski school as we focus on being a teaching hill.
@@SmrtWntCrzy similar here in the Montreal area. Saint Bruno is just a hill of ~200 m, Bromont ~500 m and even the famous Mont Tremblant is barely 875 m.

Dude that was awesome. So nice to see someone (especially a border) showing respect to everyone else, instead of the "you're on my line" and trying to charge as close to everyone in some weird intimidation exercise, that I see in so many uploads to youtube. But also the small but interesting bits of advice, like sticking to the sides because the snow gets pushed there, by the volume of skiers.

Epic run mate. How'd you get in to instructing? My son has aspirations of being a teacher until I suggested he should become a snowboarding/skiing instructor and pointed him at the SIA stuff in Austria (our usual haunt) and now he's seriously considering an Alpine career of some description. Was there any specific courses you did that are internationally recognised?

@@vitalhostage1719 so I did my stuff through BASI, the British system. It is good because at its top level it is aligned with the French qualification meaning you can teach in France. I've never actually worked in Austria but I think if you want to make a career from it then teaching in France or Switzerland is the best way to go. But before you are qualified to this level you can teach in other countries, and although you won't make much money it is a great way to travel and get visas. I used to go back and forth between Canada and New Zealand for about 5 years before settling in France! Although now I only teach snowboarding I do have my basic ski qualifications too, and that definitely helps you get work, theres definitely more work for ski instructors! Just check where the qualification will let you work, for instance the Canadian one is quite good value but will only really let you work in Canada. As I say I'm not too sure how the Austrian system aligns with other other countries, but if you check out the BASI website it details the path quite simply. Basically it's broken down into 4 levels with each level opening up more opportunities for you. Level 1 is just going to let you work in snow domes in the UK, level 2 is some European countries, Canada, NZ and Australia, then your level 3 is Switzerland and Italy, then the level 4 is pretty much just for France. The level 1 and 2 are very attainable, then the level 3 things really ramp up!

I've done it on snowboard, it's definitely a black run at the beginning, then the flat section is really long and if you loose speed it's a nightmare
just got back from my first ever snowboarding trip. winged it as a first timer and watched videos over 3 days. I fell A LOT! and then I come home and find these awesome videos lol. Now I want to hurry back to the mountains! (also I was like 777 LULW)

@@malcolmmoore I'm curious why you never turned switch once, I presume you are really good at riding switch as well and maybe you don't need the practice, but I feel it takes the strain away off of my leftfoot(i'm regular as well), if I get tired on a long run like this, when I turn switch it's like I get a second wind in my legs, as my right leg is a bit more rested than my left at that point.
@@exorder2005 Yeah I normally switch up quite a but when I'm riding, it was mainly just to keep the camera angle consistent, so I didn't have to switch hands with it, and to try and give an idea of how many turns you would need to make down it. But yeah, for sure, I normally would do some switch!

Estimate about 500 turns? I Did this a long time ago. Most of the time I was the only person on it. Occasionally you would see a few skiers. Very picturesque, with amazing views. The 'scare-chair' at the end is hilarious. Along with following the train into and out of a valley, I'm sure it went next to a heliport!😂
Watching this again. Really want to try this run next year. Maybe under supervision.

I guessed only about 200. Only skied twice in my life, and both were on green runs on long weekends in Scotland, and both times were a long long time ago - 35 years +. Never set foot in Europe in my life, but now I'm retired, I'll be giving it a try in Europe all-being-well next season. But at 66 years old, that black run is to scary for a beginner like me.

Yeah it's only really a black because of the first part, but of a marketing gimmick, bit still a fun run!
A section as the one starting around 12:00 is what scares me the most on snowboard. I just feel like I am not in control when I have that little space to turn on :(
Yeah alot of people have that problem and you need to learn rocking from edge to edge. Check my video on riding flats for tips! 🤙
@@malcolmmoore Thanks. I actually found your video yesterday. I think I have the idea, but in practice I ended up crashing twice this year because (I assume) my change to toe-edge from flat was too slow ending with my heel-edge catching. I need to get a better flow, but 6 riding days a year is not a lot of practice.
On steep cat tracks/narrow connection pistes I just feel like the speed overwhelms me. Not feeling in control while there is a massive drop to the side is keeping me from enjoying those kinds of runs. I am writing it down to lack of experience at the moment and will see if I can't get some more hours on the board next year.

I’ve done this run twice before and it honestly feels like a blue run for most of the way
Yeah it's pretty chilled, it's only the very top section that is steep!
16 km in 20 min means at least 45 km/h on average, which sounds pretty fast.
I'll be doing a quick one this season, if resort ever opens! This was more of a leisurely pace, but trying to keep good technique, it's quite easy to go fast with bad technique!
I really enjoy this long ride run but you should be using longer pole for your goPro so that I can see you entire board.

This may add more weight, but a counterbalance may reduce fatigue on your hand. Such as a stack of washers on the end of the handle that matches the weight of the boom, gimbal and gopro. I'm considering this myself.

I would love a run this long 😍 hilarious that you point out that skiers don't see they're sides much. I make it a point to be the safest one out there. Stop on sides, let groups pass me, and always looking uphill. I see no point rushing down the mountain, especially at the expense of my health or anyone else's. Damn selfish that is.

On the flats: rocking edge to edge is indeed safer but tends to be slower, don't you think?
Hey Loic, if the board is carving on its edge, as in if there's no skid at all, then there won't be much friction against the snow and you shouldn't loose much speed. If there is any skid at all though it will slow you down. It is ok to Ride flat base as well but you just need to read the slope and know that if you're on a flat base if the piste is tilted even slightly to the left or right then the board will follow!

When you’re going around a turn on the cat tracks do you just try to stay on one edge?
It depends, you have to read the slope, if it is tilted to one side it might put you on your heel edge if it is tilted to the other side it might put you on your toes. However it is usually possible to make quick edge changes anyway. This is quite tricky though and requires you stay low and use your feet and knees independently to quickly turn the board. Check out my video on quick edge changes, and tortional twist, to get all the movements down for making these kind of turns!

Great video, I love your channel! I have recently started snowboarding but i’ve injured mu wrists as I fell down. Should that discourage me and did you ever get hurt while snowboarding?
Thanks for the support! Wrist injurys are a common injury when learning to snowboard, try not to let it put you off though, perhaps invest in some wrist guards for next time though.When I use to skateboard I broke my wrist twice but luckily I've never hurt them snowboarding. I have broken my back snowboarding but that was due to being in an avalanche which only happens if you start riding off piste!
Which gimbal do you use?
This was using the noir quark matter gimbal, but to be honest now on the hero 9 you get full 360 horizon levelling with the max lens mod. You can however only shoot in wide and superview with it, so I now only use the gimbal for when I'm using linear mode!
I heard this is mostly a blue run with the exception of the top section, is this an accurate description? Or is my friend trying to kill me off 😂

did you change the size of your warpig comparing to your previous one? or still rocking the L size?
Stayed on the L, I changed it up because the board delaminates easily, so they replaced it on warranty, but now the same thing has happened again and they won't replace it!

I hit something in the snow, but I wasn't in the best position on my toe edge which is why I lost grip for a second. Check my 'correct your posture' video from a while back to see how you should stand on your toe edge!

Yep, and I thought I would spend the quarantine split boarding but the government has put strict measures forbidding any dangerous activities.
