Hi Malcolm, as a powder beginner who’s doing its first runs, there is one video you should do: the Dos and Donts when you’re stuck. I.e. when to remove the board, how to get back up and running again, how to create a solid base where to stand, etc. I’m learning the hard way…a few tips would have helped!
Was gonna ask the same! When you cartwheel over your head and are lying like a powder submerged starfish, and your hand sinks 3 feet down, what’s the best course of action?
@@DialPopcorn 1 year later, i became a powder semi-expert after a trip to Canada. Rules i've found: 1) Absolutely do not go against gravity, meaning that whatever you have to do to get into a "vertical" position that you will get up from, do it following the direction of gravity. Roll, do whatever you have to do, but don't fight the snow any more than you already have to do. 2) once you are face down, down the fall line, you have to build a platform with you hands to enable you to stand up. 3) Once you manage to do so, send it vertically down with weight on your back, if you don't get speed you're back to square one. This said, A) In deep pow, be sure you have some cardio training or you'll end up in a heli. 2) If you fall in an area that has not enough steepness, you really are screwed, and be ready to do some "paddling" like surfers do.

Love this style of video where you're explaining what you're doing while you're doing it. Its very engaging, and unique; I haven't seen other snowboard channels do it.
I never felt any pain falling in pow. Its just like how you imagine, landing in a pillow of fluff breaking your fall completely. Its almost surreal and confusing if that happens, you fall so soft yet stopped so quickly. Jump off roofs in 2m snow flat on your back, noproblem. Be carefull for rocks and other unexpected objects tough, those sneakers can hurt you hard, and Ive seen some near misses yes, from people landing on hidden rocks not getting damaged or falling next to a big branch of dead tree sticking right up. Be carefull bros, danger is our there.
Nicely done, very well explained. I really liked the hand-to-snowflake analogy, never thought of explaining it that way. I agree with the up-unweighted turn and learning to carve to achieve the smooth surfy transition needed to make pow turn nearly effortless. Keep up the great work Malcolm, looking forward to seeing your channel grow quickly this season.

Love this video. Good suggestions. Wish we had wide open powder here. We generally have it close to the tree line so definitely a lot of gauging where to not just sink down 4 feet here in CO (US). Most of the open runs are groomed even here up at 10-11k feet.

Hi Malcolm, I think in all European resorts off piste is really off piste that is out of ski patrol responsibility and you are on your own liability. Which resorts would you recommend for good powder close to groomed marked slopes and affordable that you do not need a guide and you do not need to tour and thus less risky?
Yes correct about the liability issue, I know here in alpe d'huez pretty well but can't comment too much on other resorts, even powder close to the piste can be dangerous so finding the safe zones normally requires you to be with someone in the know! Best practice is to always hire a guide if you're unsure though!
I'm not a master but I have ridden powder and it is amazing. I normally snowboard with my family so I don't get chance to get too far away from the main groomed slope however I remember one occasion getting well out into the powder and under a lift where I suddenly stopped and sank 🤦 was a nightmare getting back out again but still great fun
This is alpe d'huez in France 🇫🇷 normally a bit busier to be honest this was on an early opening day that they didn't really announce hence the lack of crowds!
I'm centered on the ref stance, +18 -12. I don't really change it for powder to be honest. If it was a crazy deep day in somewhere like Japan then I might set my stance back, but in Europe it rarely gets that deep.
Hello, i have a question. For powder days, what is the best high back position? I tried for the first time this year, was 80cm deep snow, with K2 cool bean, flux xf, +18, -6, i'm regular, and was very hard to turn to the right, i felt my board always pulling me to the left., what do you think is wrong? if you can answer me, will be very helpful. Thanks in advance.
I'm not Malcolm, but IMHO try a wider stance angle. Maybe -9' or -12' back foot. You have a total angle of 24' between feet and usually closer to 30' is more natural. I am at 27' total myself: 18' front and -9' rear. My wife rides 15' front and -12' rear, as she likes to ride more switch.
Haha yeah! I'll be doing a retraction turns video soon, just waiting on some better snow, it rained alot in the Alps a week ago and the snow is terrible right now, so I'm sticking to more beginner stuff in the next few vids!
Another great video 👍 Which microphone do you use (couldn’t see the link in the description)? Also, out of interest, why didn’t you use the Insta360 camera for this run?
I'm using a rode mini lav with the windfur thingy on it. The 360 cam only let's you get up to 1080p footage once you crop into the original 5k full frame. I also think for tutorial vids it sometimes warps my body too much, but I'm sure I'll use it more in the future!
@@malcolmmoore not sure which video editing software you’re using, but I’m aware that in iMovie you can start a new movie project and upload a 4k photo first at the start and then upload any subsequent video clips of lesser quality (ie 1080p), finish all the editing before finally removing the initial 4k photo and it will keep your movie as 4k. There’s a chap on RUclips that gives brilliant iMovie tips. PS Even if you think the insta360 warps your body, I prefer the 360 footage and believe it’s far better than having the stick visible from the GoPro (hopefully GoPro release a Max2 soon).
Big rockered nose, setback stance, you can't go wrong 👌 something like the amplid surfari will give you an idea, I have a link to them in my video description 😉
Yeah it is really good, floats super well and is just a great fun all mountain board. It can charge, but it's not the most stable board at really high speeds, it gets a little loose, you can't have it all!

Yes correct about the liability issue, I know here in alpe d'huez pretty well but can't comment too much on other resorts, even powder close to the piste can be dangerous so finding the safe zones normally requires you to be with someone in the know! Best practice is to always hire a guide if you're unsure though!
Winter is coming ❄️
😉🙌
There’s nothing better!
💯
Life is good bro! 👍😁
Sure is 😁
Is this Alpe D'Huez?
Correct!
Yeah, getting stuck is the worst!
I’m new to your channel. What resort do you ride at? The snow is amazing and somehow there is nobody on this beautiful mountain. The pow pow wow wow
This is alpe d'huez in France 🇫🇷 normally a bit busier to be honest this was on an early opening day that they didn't really announce hence the lack of crowds!
Where are you at? It's not even busy there. Beautiful.
Alpe d'Huez in France 🇫🇷
is a powder board really necessary or a regular board would do fine in powder?
Normal board works fine, just not as well!
I see you're using Amplid. You should try the Pentaquark (not in pow).
Yeah I really want to try that board, looks like it would be epic for high speed piste blasting!
Hi Malcolm how did you set your bindings for this video? I have a twin and am wondering how far back I should setup.
I'm centered on the ref stance, +18 -12. I don't really change it for powder to be honest. If it was a crazy deep day in somewhere like Japan then I might set my stance back, but in Europe it rarely gets that deep.
@@malcolmmoore Right on. Thanks for the reply. I figured as much. Cheers!
Nice
Thanks Benjamin 🙌
Malcolm's most replayed section in this one is his Kim Jong Un impression LMAO
😂😂😂
There is a closed down resort not far from where I live, how many cm of snow do you think I need to keep me off the ground?
If the snow is a bit heavier you can get away with 10cms, but usually you want 25cms plus to start getting that bottomless feeling!
Hi Malcom. Why do not use the Insta 360 anymore?
I will probably use it for the odd clip here and there but for full videos I prefer the slightly less warped look of a standard action cam
Nice tips.
Off topic: How often do you wax your snowboard?
Usually every couple of weeks 👍
LMAO 10:04 Didn't know we souded like Canadians from Southpark in your head.
I'm not your buddy guyyy
Lmao yeah I can hear that now
I was about to comment about the down unweighted turn but then you addressed it lol
Haha yeah! I'll be doing a retraction turns video soon, just waiting on some better snow, it rained alot in the Alps a week ago and the snow is terrible right now, so I'm sticking to more beginner stuff in the next few vids!
FRESH tracks all over blackcomb!!
Another great video 👍
Which microphone do you use (couldn’t see the link in the description)?
Er, nice ski suit Malcolm. :-D
Haha I like this one!
Hi malcom, how u got ur bindings set up?
+18 -12 👍👍
Where is this? Wish I could find such an open slope with this snow condition
Alpe d'Huez France 🇫🇷
What is your recommendation for a dedicated powderboard?
Big rockered nose, setback stance, you can't go wrong 👌 something like the amplid surfari will give you an idea, I have a link to them in my video description 😉
You know where I can find this type of neckwarmer ?
Buff is the brand that male loads of different styles 👍
what stance angles are you riding? Looks comfortable af
+18 -12 👍
how is the mountain so empty when there is so much good snow?
I know so lucky! Best tip, avoid holidays!!
How do you find good powder in the alps?
Not sure if this is a setup for a joke or a legit question?
How's the Dada fairing up ?
Yeah it is really good, floats super well and is just a great fun all mountain board. It can charge, but it's not the most stable board at really high speeds, it gets a little loose, you can't have it all!
