I’m scared. But this helps me a lot. This is the video I have been looking for for the longest time. This one is super thorough and I enjoy the examples provided. Especially the falls. It keeps it real and emphasizes the fact to start small and keep at it before graduating to the next jump
I skateboarded every day for 12 years or something and I was good. Years later I got a snowboard and hit a jump on day one and broke a rib. Work your way up… I’m and older dude now, but I’m going to shred the park. Thanks for the vid!
Rode up a 50 footer calm as a bird today. Knuckled first time, cleared it with mute grab 2nd and 3rd. Side hits and powder drops helped with being comfortable weightless.
This video has been the best thing for my improvement for snowboarding so far… I’ve been trying to hit jumps for the past two seasons (I usually only get about 5 days on the mountain a year) and I watched this video last night and today I properly hit real jumps and even got some grabs in. The biggest tip that I was completely failing on and didn’t realize till this video was that I wasn’t bringing my back leg up… that was a game changer and I actually caught some real air time and not the bunny hops that I was doing before! Thank you!
This is the first explanation and tips for jumps that have made any sense to me. Thank you so much. Can't wait to ride after this storm rolls through and put it in practice 😎
I’m turning 40 this year. Started snowboarding when I was 10 or 11, but only got back to it properly this winter after more than a decade of not riding almost at all. I’ve now hit bigger jumps than ever before and started to also practice new tricks. However, I’ve never had any proper training, so watching these kinds of videos is really helpful as my body can’t take hits anymore as well as it used to. And the videos help me pinpoint some of the more basic stuff where I might have poor technique or just bad habits. Thanks!
I come from a background of skateboarding. I’m moving up north soon, I’ve always been curious about snowboarding. Here’s hoping I can adapt because snowboarding looks sick!!!
I saw this video a few weeks ago and I’ve watched it every time before going out to shred. The tip about keeping the board under you if you’re falling. Saved me a couple of times.
I found a lot of value in this! I’m hitting 10-15 footers I’m in my 6th season of boarding and the best advice I ever got was from my brother, always hit jumps from your toes, not turning tho you wanna go straight but be on your toes so you don’t land on your back and get the wind knocked out of you.
a year ago i started boarding and went twice on a small hill near me as we dont have any mountains near me and i decided to straight bomb one of our blue runs and using my phone speedometer i noticed that i reached 78 kmh i was so happy
I had 2 back surgeries myself bro .. and 2 acls..one on each knee ..I’m currently on medium jumps and 360’ing small 20’ jumps and want to be able to 3 the 30-40’ mediums this year ..def going to take it slow like you said
Gosh I needed to see this video. I am snowboarding for 4 years and I love adrenaline, but I could never land right on those big jumps and I was like what am I doing wrongg? Thanks to this video I know, that it wasnt just one thing ahah. Im looking forward to go to shred park and try it again, but from the beggining. Peace out shredder!
Best big jump tutorial! This video makes so much more sense now that I'm getting more air and hitting bigger jumps. Keep hitting those side jumps and perfect that ollie!
Been using your tips lately. Went up the hill yesterday and was trying tame dogs and methods. Didn't land the tame dogs 100% and my methods weren't the prettiest. Will keep practicing. Thanks for the Videos!
I've been snowboarding since I was 12 but I've somehow managed to hold myself back for years and years trying to teach my friends basics and keeping them company as they learn and I kind of neglected myself and furthering my skill ever since. The lessons I had had before were funded by my high school so once I graduated I didn't have those lessons anymore and I was too scared to learn the harder stuff on my own. I've always wanted to learn jumps and tricks and being able to go through the parks with confidence. I can do ollies alright. Steep runs and high speeds and carving and switching is second nature to me, but height, the feeling of my feet leaving the ground still freaks me out. I'm 30 now. Just got myself a new board, new gear that desperately needed updating. I'm rearing to go. Even though I'm not OLD, I don't know if I can take a fall the way I did as a teen. It was so easy to just get back up then. So I'm looking for any tips I can possibly find so that I feel just a little bit better about trying this stuff on my own. Thank you for the great video, it makes me feel a bit more at ease.✌
Love it! Definitely not too old. My device would be pad up so it hurts as little as possible, and take baby steps. Ride at the edge of your abilities but it beyond them. Learn from someone ahead of you and make sure to have fun. You got this 🙌
When I went snowboarding for the first time, after I knew how to turn. I was like I wanna do a jump. I was to afraid of hurting myself, so I didn't do it. I didn't even know how to olie.I am glad I didnt take that jump. Thanks for this video.
I remember I was riding in an unfamiliar resort and I accidentally rode into the park and it was dark I didn’t realize I was hitting the jump until I’m already on takeoff. Handled the first jump like a champ but I was going too fast didn’t have time to slow down for the second jump, went all crazy over it and crashed. It was fun. And that was only my 2nd time jumping.
I got on a snowboard for the first time yesterday and practiced on flat ground, to carpet, to tiny slope, to greens heel-side only, to S turns, to 180° within 5 hours. Today I got more familiar with the board by the end of the day I was hitting jumps that were taller than me, 180’s off the jumps, riding black diamonds heel and toeside, and can stop fast. But I have been longboarding for 5 or 6 years so I was already good with balance, foot pressure, Ollie’s, 180’s, and feeling comfortable at high speed. The jumps were the scariest part which is why I’m here I ate shit a lot but a few times I hit the jumps really nice.
My first jump was a super high one, I hadn’t checked the park and the jump looked small, than when I was in the air I noticed it wasnt small so yeah, I fell knee first on ice and went home on a stretcher, plus I couldn’t go out for the next week. Pure pain
Remember my first time on a jump (was learning to ride my first season, but was already pretty comfy riding red). It was that little jump, that shoots you straight up (for back flip etc), I approached it slowly just to check it, yet it catapulted me 3 metres away, landing me on my back. The first feeling I had was "I broke my pelvis and I shat myself" as I immediately felt a very warm down there. It was terrible, knocked the wind out of me and nobody was even around to check on me. But few tries and I was hitting it (like safely bunny hopping over it) 😀
Great video! The only thing i think was missing is that while it is important to get away from the landing asap, it is also important for the person hitting the kicker after someone to never go right after they left. Wait until you either see them leave the Kickerline or you see them hit the second, or better the third kicker. If you land on someone because you didn't wait long enough you might hurt yourself and them and worst case you might end up with legal consequences
I never hit a jump before until a month ago my second time snowboarding in two years (I’ve snowboarded like 11 times) but I think I’ve gotten really good at controlling my board just the last two times I went
Still learning to jump on a snowboard after switching to it from skiing a couple years back, but even on skis straight air is so sketchy. That moment when you really send it off a big one and hit the top of the arc in the air I can remember twice where I said to myself "oh shit..I'm really high up. Maybe I went too big. I really hope this landing isn't ice" as time kinda slows for a couple seconds while watching it approach. Landed them both times, but man were they insane.
Im new at snowboarding this season. Less than a dozen riding days thus far. Just stumbled on this channel, it's vastly superior to the mindless drivel and click bait out there. Ill say, many motocross tracks have "tabletops" which is a jump with a flat section to land on for when beginners undershoot. Obviously, this takes away some of the air beneath you for flailing, gyroscopic type tricks, but its safer for learning to clear the jump, speed, etc. I haven't tried to ride the park. Probably wont this season at this rate. - But looking at snow jumps they seem more intimidating than those at a motocross track, to me. The place I rode dirt bikes at as a teen had a mix of tabletops and doubles. First time I ever ended up 8-10 feet in the air, looking down at trees, I thought I had taken a flattop but landed flat on the ground between two six-foot ramps. No tabletop present. Used all my suspension travel: bikes and my legs and seat cushion... got TF out of the way and took a minute to bring the adrenaline down. Bike didn't bend and i stayed on the foot-pegs which saved a hospital trip. Haha. Anyway, the snow park doesn't appear as forgiving as a tabletop, and looks a lot more like that double i took too slow. Too many ways it can go wrong and only one way it can go right. (Perfect speed, and perfect timed ollie combined).
great video - i've seen from other tutorials that popping off the jump with both feet isn't necessarily a bad thing as long as your nose if past the lip. Popping with both feet off the lip can bring some stability, would you agree or no?
maaan this video makes we wanna go back to jumping, which i clearly shouldnt ;D. the last time i did a kicker was the go big or go him and i fell from 8+m straight on the flat part entirely dislocating my leg out of the hip - doctors said thats impossible unless the hip fractures into tiny bits, well here i am 16yrs later still alive
Can't wait to hit some jumps soon will take it slow at first but want to send some spin and grabs once I get the hang of it. Hopefully some of my skating experience will help but I know how painful it can be tumbling off a jump in the snow so. Thanks for the advice Shreddy Eddy.
@@ShredSchool1 yea it can hurt if you slam on concrete for sure but most of the time it kills when you board whacks you in the knee, shin or ankle. Atleast your strapped in on a snowboard. Do you wear knee pads for snowboarding?
Please wear a helmet. I used to ride motocross, landed head first. The helmet and leatt neck brace prevented a very serious injury, and I still shattered and dislocated my shoulder. On a snow board, you can hit the same speeds. Stay safe dude
I agree with everything in this video and very informative. Only thing I can comment on is small jumps hit very different to big ones and speed is key on big jumps. So I always tell people feel it out on the small ones and on the big ones double your speed and commit. Sure we all fall when learning, but falling can be good because it teaches you to not be afraid of the jump and you can get back up after a nasty fall and do it till you pull it don't let the jump beat you. I have saved my ass on many bad jumps just knowing how to control myself and control my crash. It takes true skill to have a bad launch or takeoff on a big jump and be able to correct it in the air fast and efficient enough to make the fall not so bad. So even if you do fall ur still learning control.
My main takeaways from this video: always ollie, more speed less pop so don’t fear speed, level out at height of air, tail last off the jump, heel to toe or flat off jump, landing back first on a knuckle is fun. I hit a few jumps in VT without watching this video. Super green to jumps. Once or twice it felt more natural and like the ramp was doing most of the work if my tail was last to leave the jump and most control using a toe edge to get air. Can’t wait for my next jump.
Didn't snowboard for like 10 years. went down the hill a few times and made a jump. It sent me 8 feet high and I landed 20 feet away. Problem was I know how to ollie so maybe don't ollie but hop your fist try or testing a new jump. Gives you a better idea of how fast to go or if the jump is to steep like mine was sent me to the moon had to land on my heels in a stopping position so I didn't eat it.
Thanks!!!! Great advice but you forgot to mention protection!!!! A helmet is essential, plus a spinal and wrists protections will help with your confidence
I don’t understand why older/more experienced people judge the beginners and make fun of them in the park, we all start somewhere and I’m a beginner and i feel like they restrict a lot of people from trying tricks and jumps because they fear getting laughed at, we should all teach each other
Get this….I used to be able to do most everything off a tabletop…took 10 years off i.e. family..started riding again last couple years…can’t even get backside 3 around anymore!?!
Some people say that you should not olly off jumps but pop with nose and tail at the same time. Because with an olly you have the risk of falling over in the air? What is your opinion about this? Great video btw🔥
Hit my first medium jump today. I think I screamed and panicked halfway into the landing realising how high I got. Why is it so dam scary up in the air on a snowboard! I didn’t fall and hiked up about 10 times, the scare factor in the air never left…. Neither did the scream. Lucky my arms stopped flapping about like a weirdo trying to put up both my windows up in a hurry. I just don’t know how to gain more confidence in the air that I stop panicking before the landing. Thanks for the great video I can’t wait to try some new tips soon.
Epic! Congrats on hitting your first medium jump. You'll get used to it, it's just reps. Check out our jump exercise video on how to get more comfortable in the air ruclips.net/video/pZw6Uvo01oM/видео.html
1:12 Lmao this made me spit out my water on the screen. Literally the first thing I did once groomers got old. Broken wrist and a few years later I can sort of hit bigger jumps now. I'll still eat it for sure but doing it with class and no injuries is an art of its own.
😂 that's hilarious... not the broken wrist though. Hope it healed up well. Someone else in the comments was just asking "who does this?" I see it all the time. Baby steps is definitely where it's at
Been using your tips lately. Went up the hill yesterday and was trying tame dogs and methods. Didn't land the tame dogs 100% and my methods weren't the prettiest. Will keep practicing. Thanks for the Videos!
Biffed it once when I was around 12. Went off a larger park jump and landed flat on my back just past the knuckle. Winded and couldn't move for a couple minutes. Someone else came in behind me, cut through my coat and sliced my arm open with their edge landing on me.
I overshot a second jump in a fun park once. It took 8 times to clear the knuckle for the first jump. So the 9th time I cleared and and went like an ICBM on the second and the landing was so brutal and I had to absorb , I scraped my face.
Can't stress enough how important it is to scope the entire jump first. A few years ago I overshot the landing to flat because I didn't look at it first. What looked like a 60 footer was more like a 40, maybe less 😆. Anyways, broke my board AND my back. spent the rest of the week in the hospital. Stoooopid.
@@ShredSchool1 admittedly, the whole ordeal kinda spooked me and my buddies, and our progression really came to a stall. But, a decade later, we're riding steady again, and it feels fun and fresh again! How is your spine bones after your accident?
first time I ever stood on a snowboard I went to the black slope(indoor) barely hanging on to the ski lift and went straight down I had no idea what I was doing
Glad it was helpful! We have a 14-part butter series broken down in to super small baby steps that teaches you all the major butters inside Shred School at www.Edshreds.com . Because we did it as a series, we don't have a standalone RUclips version
First off, how am I just now seeing your channel? I’m a little confused on your pop vs ollying over the jump. Every video I’ve seen says to pop off of jumps but it seems like you are saying to Ollie off of the jump. When I hit jumps I’ve been popping off of the lip with both legs and I feel like I never get that much air (especially when compared to better riders who are going the same speed as me). Can you clarify a little bit for me how I should be taking off the lip of the jump? Should I pop but in order to do it properly do I need to pop only after my front foot clears (currently I pop right before my front foot reaches the lip)? Or do I really need to do an actual Ollie off the jump? Most of the type of jumps I hit have steep transitions as opposed to a roller type hit. Thanks, subscribed:D
Welcome to the channel 👊 yes, a pop and an ollie are the same motion which is why I don't like it when RUclipsrs describe them as two different things. Popping is much more subtle, but you still want your tail to snap off the jump. An ollie is kind of like an exaggerated pop. If you are jumping with two legs and not getting enough air you're likely "jumping" early and should pop off the lip with your tail. Let me know if that clears things up
Gotcha! I think I’m popping too early then. I’ll try doing it a little later as well going through the motions of an Ollie but without the intent of doing an ollie (if that makes sense). Thanks for the tips!!
Heel edge jumps???? I pretty much always do front side spins off my heels: 180's and 360's. But when I do half cabs or try switch frontside 3 my edge kinda washes out before lose a little speed and it's not that clean. ANy tips? Also been trying a mute straight air off my heels where I will try to rotate 90 degrees and grab.. doing it off my heels is sometimes easier. Any thoughts about hitting jumps on your heels? I can't really spin any more than a 180 on my toes nor grab my board.
Thanks Rock68. I like to think of a "pop" as just a mini ollie. It's the same motion. If you need to go bigger, pop more aka ollie. If you want to not go as big (like if you're going too fast) pop less.
I'd save ollies for rollers or flats. If you're hitting jumps with lips that assist getting you into the air you should pop more evenly off both feet instead of loading your tail like an ollie.
Just start riding powder and you'll learn little miniature landings without realizing it... 100 days of that then start doing side hits. Or rollers. Then 100 or so of those then real park jumps. Just like how you first started making your turns. You were told the right way to go into it and you did it 100 times, then 1,000, then 10,000 and now it's so damn natural. Treat your jumps like this, knowing the proper way to 'pop' and go about it and pretty soon having your board in the air will feel just as natural as cutting turns 🤙🙏
When I’m Ollieing or popping off a jump or side hit, what’s the best way to maintain control off take off? Feel like I’m always losing control directly after popping off and going stiff legged and losing control mid air
Another important thing is to not freeze, even if things aren’t going well. You will always be safer if you can continue to think clearly and find the best way to mitigate a mistake, even if you are already in the air. You’ll also learn this with more practice. Also, I highly recommend wearing a helmet, stay safe dude

"You can even frontflip off the knuckle if you want to..." WHAT? What did this guy just say in a tutorial about learning to hit jumps???
Tamedogs are apparently really easy to hit on stuff like that once you get them down. That's what I've always heard at least.
@@rushthezeppelin I've only dared to do them into deep pow pow - Maybe I should try this year to do them of the knuckle :D
@@sebastiankolter idk but front flips normally are actually not even that hard, but i gotta see how it feels on a snowboard

When I was skiing I hit my first ever xl black jump, at that time I didn’t know how to 360 on jumps for some reason I sent it and landed perfectly 😂😂
Can't wait to hit some jumps soon will take it slow at first but want to send some spin and grabs once I get the hang of it. Hopefully some of my skating experience will help but I know how painful it can be tumbling off a jump in the snow so. Thanks for the advice Shreddy Eddy.
Usually less painful than falling on concrete on a skateboard at least
Good stuff!
This was a great vid! Such a great and detailed tutorial!
Thanks!!!! Great advice but you forgot to mention protection!!!! A helmet is essential, plus a spinal and wrists protections will help with your confidence
What’s a spinal?
This video has helped a lot. Appreciate it!
Glad to hear it!
I don’t understand why older/more experienced people judge the beginners and make fun of them in the park, we all start somewhere and I’m a beginner and i feel like they restrict a lot of people from trying tricks and jumps because they fear getting laughed at, we should all teach each other
This is such a GREAT video, man! You're awesome!!
Glad you like it 🙌
Absolutely awesome advice - thanks!
Great video btw🔥
isn’t that basically an ollie though?
Awesome in depth video. 🙏
This is a great video man thanks for the help
Great videos Ed so helpful, thank you
Very welcome!
great videos don't get dislikes even months and months after being published, keep the awesome content coming buds
RUclips actually removed visible dislikes
@@calvn8or543 actually i know buddy but that was written before 😉
Haha ya now its just a meme
Great video man looking forward to trying some small jumps this year.
@@ShredSchool1 thanks so much! I hope to have this Jump down by the end of the Aussie season :)
Baby steps is definitely where it's at
Awesome!!!!! 🏂🤩
Thank you so much
this was just right for me
Been using your tips lately. Went up the hill yesterday and was trying tame dogs and methods. Didn't land the tame dogs 100% and my methods weren't the prettiest. Will keep practicing. Thanks for the Videos!
awesome, that's what it's all about. Repetition is king
Biffed it once when I was around 12. Went off a larger park jump and landed flat on my back just past the knuckle. Winded and couldn't move for a couple minutes. Someone else came in behind me, cut through my coat and sliced my arm open with their edge landing on me.
never going to the park again after that
Why am I still here? Just to suffer?
Not a reason to quit
I have a question about the timing. Is the optimal time for us to extend our loaded back leg once the board nose hits the lip? THX!
yeah, you want the pop of the tail to be the last thing coming off the jump, so you start to snap it right as the board is leaving the lip
This helped a lot, I can do a jump switch, a melon grab, and a regular jump and im 11
I overshot a second jump in a fun park once. It took 8 times to clear the knuckle for the first jump. So the 9th time I cleared and and went like an ICBM on the second and the landing was so brutal and I had to absorb , I scraped my face.
Thank you very much. I've never thougth that i can jump one of the jumps in our Snowpark. Bevause of you i got it 🤝😂
Awesome to hear, nice work! 🙌
@@ShredSchool1 Today i did a indy grab🤝🤙
@@marvinmarvin8737 epicccc!
Land where you're supposed to on your board, got it 👌 great vid
That’s a great tutorial!
Glad it was helpful!
Great videos. Do your analytics show viewers quit too early at the intro?
Thanks! No, the stick rate on this video is great.
Stoooopid.
So rough! Hope you healed up ok and great advice
@@ShredSchool1 admittedly, the whole ordeal kinda spooked me and my buddies, and our progression really came to a stall. But, a decade later, we're riding steady again, and it feels fun and fresh again! How is your spine bones after your accident?
Wow thank you so much!
You’re welcome!
first time I ever stood on a snowboard I went to the black slope(indoor) barely hanging on to the ski lift and went straight down I had no idea what I was doing
Please be careful and wear a helmet dude. You can seriously get hurt if you begin with steep hills in the beginning, especially outdoors. Stay safe
Can you put out a tutorial on buttering? This one was super helpful!
Glad it was helpful! We have a 14-part butter series broken down in to super small baby steps that teaches you all the major butters inside Shred School at www.Edshreds.com . Because we did it as a series, we don't have a standalone RUclips version
Grab a slice of bread, then start buttering
Aren't you supposed to ensure your landing area is clear before dropping into a jump/feature?
Love the video!
This helped me a lot
Love to hear it 🙌
I got a mild concussion trying to hit a jump only on my second day riding In my entire life which was the stupidest thing I could have done
ouch! Jumps are no joke
Helmet dude, everyone could use one. Stay safe dude
Amazing, thank you!
you're welcome!
What are some tricks you recommend mastering on small jumps before moving up to bigger ones?
I'd start by learning all the different grabs
Falling back first on that knuckle 😵 oooofffff
Great vid man👍 but when would I pop and ollie, depending on the jump. Thanks man
Thanks Rock68. I like to think of a "pop" as just a mini ollie. It's the same motion. If you need to go bigger, pop more aka ollie. If you want to not go as big (like if you're going too fast) pop less.
@@ShredSchool1 oh alright I get it now thanks man 🙏
I'd save ollies for rollers or flats. If you're hitting jumps with lips that assist getting you into the air you should pop more evenly off both feet instead of loading your tail like an ollie.
@@homealone5087 thank you for the clear explanation too!!
How do you go about bigger jumps that arent groomed in the park and may not have a table? Where do you look to land?
Usually the steepest part of the landing
Just start riding powder and you'll learn little miniature landings without realizing it... 100 days of that then start doing side hits. Or rollers. Then 100 or so of those then real park jumps.
Just like how you first started making your turns. You were told the right way to go into it and you did it 100 times, then 1,000, then 10,000 and now it's so damn natural. Treat your jumps like this, knowing the proper way to 'pop' and go about it and pretty soon having your board in the air will feel just as natural as cutting turns 🤙🙏
good edit my bro :)
I dont understand why you dont have more subscribers
Appreciate you 🙏 we're on our way
When I’m Ollieing or popping off a jump or side hit, what’s the best way to maintain control off take off? Feel like I’m always losing control directly after popping off and going stiff legged and losing control mid air
how may ollies have you done off rollers first?
@@ShredSchool1 not too many yet lol but I have the Ollie pretty well on flat ground. Just feel a bit unsteady off small jumps yet
I would do like 100 ollies off groomed rollers and then try on a small jump and see how that feels different
@@ShredSchool1 okay thanks! I’ll keep up the practice
Another important thing is to not freeze, even if things aren’t going well. You will always be safer if you can continue to think clearly and find the best way to mitigate a mistake, even if you are already in the air. You’ll also learn this with more practice. Also, I highly recommend wearing a helmet, stay safe dude
LoL - "You can even front flip off the knuckle if you want to" - Good advice for the "how to hit a jump" tutorial ;-)
what a great video!!!
Glad you liked it!
do you wear any protections beside helmet for middium or large jump?
I do not, but I know some pros wear butt pads or even a back brace. Never a bad idea to have more protection
14:32 👍🏽 So true!!! , literally gtfo the way!!
this sport is like 30% skill and 70% mental. It isn't hard to become an advanced snowboarder, but it's extremely difficult to become an expert one.
Send it my guys🤘
Going snowboarding for the first time next week. I'm not scared at all, which scares me.
